Hi Glen, the silver pocket knife is a fruit knife. They made them because stainless steel didn't exist yet and if you cut fruit with a carbon blade it both stained it and took it's edge, particularly if you were out and about and couldn't immediately clean and oil it. Be careful what oil you use as modern oils will both stain and crack the mother of pearl. Best stuff to use is Japanese sword oil, it's mainly camelia. You add a few drops of clove oil to the bottle about five will do it. You can mail order it from Axminster tools, it's perfect for all your knives and tools. Polish it with autosol, be careful around the assay marks. Sharpen it on a very fine stone or wet and dry on a block, use 1000 grit. It won't get shaving sharp but will slice a tomato etc. Will be a lovely thing to carry, buy a little leather slip for it. Heinne Haynes have some for about a fiver. The maker is John Yeoman's cowlishaw of Sheffield, I can't make out the date mark. Have a look on line for date letter and company history. Back in the day a dapper gentle man would never be without one. All the best mate John.

That watch was a fantastic haul!! Did you know there is a phone app that makes your phone into a magnifier? Really helps when you are trying to look at objects in the field, and you can also use it to take photos of the magnified item. 24:50- That piece really looks like a end of an arc welding rod with the flux on it. 29:18- Too bad the cobblers last is not complete. They sell for good money here in the U.S. 31:11- You can find the knife maker by researching the hall marks. Likely a jeweler could tell you also. Great find on the knife too.

It's nice to imagine that the punch with the letter on it could have been a date letter used by an assay office when validating silver, gold, and platinum items. The letter M on the watch you found would have indicated the year it was made. Similarly with the beautiful fruit knife you found. By the way, did you find out anything more about the watch?
