I tend to agree with Sinead about the windows, but Adrian is also right about having some wall above the large window in the entrance/porch area. Adrian's idea about putting in skylights is a good one and since the roof is needed to be redone anyway, now is the time to put them in. Skylights at the rear of the house (assuming that the house is south facing) or on the north side will help to avoid any dark areas in the home. I'm not sure you need skylights in the porch/entrance area Adrian. To avoid having a steep embankment at the back, Terracing it into 3 steps, house or ground level, raised garden and then field, is one way to stagger the embankment and avoid creating a big shadow at the rear. My family home in Wales (500 year old farmhouse) is also built into a hill (steeper than what you have) and so I understand the challenges. This is an exciting project and I can't wait to watch the progress.

Definitely the larger windows, but not all the way to the roof line. If you want to keep the cottage look, use old-style windows in the front of the house where people will actually notice them from the outside. But people won't be spending time looking at the windows from the outside from any other place outside. The MOST important feature is a LOT of light inside the house, esp. in Ireland. You don't want a dim, dreary interior for sure. Plus, larger windows will enhance the GLORIOUS views all around.

I agree with your wife about the small windows. I also agree with you that the big window at the front needs to come down a bit from the roof. Keep the fire place in the bed room.

I always like a window that looks out onto the road so you can see the traffic coming up the road. Gives you time to get hid behind the sofa if it’s somebody you don’t want to see 😂 Looks like a site that gets a lot of sunlight, wee sunroom on the side would be a nice feature

You've got everything required to make this one of the more interesting reno's on yt. A good looking couple who are naturals on camera, really good camera skills and a worthwhile project. I agree with Sinead about everything especially keeping the fireplace, it's just going to look like a new build if you don't retain the old features. Is that your land around the cottage?, if so the possibilities for a spectacular garden and maybe a wooden barn/garage type building are endless. Looking forward to more vids more drone shots of the area and the easy going fun dynamic between both of you.

Okay, so I am an Australian (of remote Celtic, Viking and Italian heritage). I love a good renovation, tiny house, garden makover as do most of us I believe. But, perhaps a little known fact about down under, we are hardcore accent groupies. So purely on that basis, and the fact that your wife's name is Sinead, you have my subscription for what it's worth 😊.

Whatever you and Sinead decide to do, I'm sure it's going to look brilliant. I'm a bit of a historical architectural nut so would keep as much as I can. If you remove too much you'll ruin the character of the place, which is more about the history of the area. With regards to the entrance, I would leave the 2 pillars in and have a separate entrance for vehicles. It not only lends itself to the charm and history of the place, it also makes a good pedestrian entrance if someone want to go for a walk and leave there car there. But as I said I am sure that whatever you decide to do, it will be a really nice finish and a lovely place to stay. 👍🤗

I’m so happy you’re starting on the cottage! And it’s nice to make your wife’s acquaintance. I really like your plan A. I think it will balance the look of the cottage and get the roof looking cohesive. I think your wife is right about the window size. And you are right about the size of the space above the windows. My only suggestion is to make space for a powder room at the other end of the house. Whether it’s you two with children and grandchildren there all the time, or your children with a growing family, or guests from abroad, you’ll be happy there are two restrooms. You might also want a storage shed or storage room on the back somewhere. This will be fun!❤️🤗🐝

This video was randomly recommended to me by KZfaq today. While watching, I started wondering what part of Ireland this is, especially hearing the word ‘garden’ 😊 as it sounded familiar to me. My parents are from Cavan (Tullyvin & Ballyjamesduff) & we used to visit (from London) when I was growing up. I am thrilled to see this old cottage being reclaimed. ❤ 🙏

I agree with Sinead about the windows. You can still make them in the cottage style. I agree with Adrian on the big window on the addition, it does need to come down so it matches the others. Hi. My husband and I renovated a 1900s cottage in west of Ireland. We had it for 10 years. I wd offer this advice, based on experience. 1. Ensure you dig out a deep storm drain at rear of house, otherwise heavy rainfall from higher field cd flood your home. 2. Get SEAI grant to wrap exterior in thermal insulation. Amazing difference! 3. Look to eco friendly heating...future proof. 4. Small windows make indoors too dark, especially in winter! Add a sun room at the south side, with really big window. Use old style solid teak frames for the traditional cottage look. Good Luck! I will be following you. 🎉

I think there's a happy medium keeping the traditional Irish character of the windows and having more light making the windows a bit larger. All the windows being the same will tie the place together maybe a focal point Larger bay window or three windows of the same style where there's the best view and room for it. I've had nothing but problems with skylights, leaks, heat loss or heat gain it gets really cold where I live. I can raise or lower the temperature 15 degrees opening or closing curtains. Second floor prep is a great idea, Anything you do to prevent the loss and preserve the history of the house is wonderful.

Whilst the tiny windows may be traditional, they turn the house into a dark hole. Much better to leave those larger windows as they are, with the exception of those on the front extension which you're right about and need the tops dropped a bit.

Large windows have a greenhouse effect in the summer and let wind and cold in in the winter. I like the traditional Irish cottage look of the deeply pitched roof with smaller windows. Maybe a larger picture window in the back of the house for nice views. I will stay in you Airbnb!

I do like the idea of the small red windows with the velux skylights, I think it will give it character; on the other hand I can also see where Sinead is coming from, small windows make it dark and dingy and you want to see the view, so what about keeping the living area windows large and the hallway and bedrooms smaller? as long as they are symmetrical on the house it wont look weird.

Remember Happy Wife = Happy life. I would go ad a 4 meter exstension to the roof off the bathroom end for a cover parking area for winter time. The window should be one side on the front to keep the top of the windows on the same plane. The front needs to be all same size windows for a nice curb appeal. Another option you do is use the current lay out and add second story and add a second bathroom besides what you add to the lower area and put a couple bedrooms up stairs .
