That's Middle High German (ca. AD 1050 - 1350). More precisely the High Medieval Upper German poetry language of the Staufen period (German royal lineage of the 12th and 13th c.). Most important was the influence of Alemannic. Thus Swiss German dialects (Alemannic in Switzerland) remained most similar to Middle High German in the said meaning because Alemannic is phonetically more conservative than other Upper German dialects. The flag is the blood banner, one of the medieval German war flags. It's preserved in the Swiss national flag and in the coat of arms of several towns in German speaking countries (like Vienna).

I am from the very southwest of Germany and I can unterstand all of it pretty easily. Some words that are used are quite uncommon today, or at least the way they are used is unusual for us but 80percent or so I get at the first listen.

Echt? ich habe mir gedacht, wow das ist sehr leicht zu verstehen. Eventuell liegt es auch daran dass bei uns so viele deutsche Dialekte zusammenkommen und es für mich deshalb so leicht zu verstehen ist.

Thank you for your reaction! Greetings from Germany! Fun fact: The Germans never had slavery or slave markets. What the British and French achieved in 100 years with enormous slavery, Germans did in 40 years with hard work. Yes the Germans had colonies but unlike the British and French the Germans invested in these colonies because they were a base to protect our trade. Which was absolutely unthinkable at the time as everyone else in Africa was just letting hell loose. You can also look at the comparison between the British Empire and the German Empire in terms of economy. We were almost on par with the British even though we didn't even had nearly as many colonies. In addition, the British colonies contributed much more to their economy than Great Britain itself. For us it was exactly the opposite... Germany contributed 70% of the economy. The German Empire was truly an absolute high. From 1871 to 1923, the Germans were also responsible for *90* percent of ALL scientific and medical advances in the world with incredible inventions like the car, motorcycle, camera, etc. Before the British started World War I because they were jealous of us, it was actually the best 40 years ever here in Germany. Of course, based on today's technology, less so, but for the time... Absolutely unbelievable. At this time the first health insurance company was even introduced here in Germany by Otto von Bismarck. They still don't exist in the US today. Furthermore, German workers under Wilhelm II were the best paid workers in Europe. It's absolutely beautiful

The Crusades were a period of time that saw the foundation of four States in modern day Israel, Egypt, Syria, and Turkey. During the time of the first Crusade, the Muslims had begun to attack the Byzantine Empire as well as harass Christian Pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land. As such, the Pope called for all Christians to band together and reclaim the Holy Land. The lords of Sicily, Toulouse, Flanders, and other lords took up the call and marched into the Byzantine Empire where excessive amounts of drama happened. From here, they marched from Constantinople, now called Istanbul by the Turks, into Rum (modern day Turkey) and reclaimed many Byzantine lands. Once they reached Antioch, they began setting up their own independent states instead of reclaiming the land for the Byzantines. From here, the Principality of Antioch, the County of Edessa, the County of Triploli, and the Kingdom of Jerusalem were created. By the time of the fifth Crusade, which is when this song was performed, the Byzantine Empire had already collapsed and Europe had witnessed what we call the "Children's Crusade" which was a symbolic movement that saw children, mostly from 8-14 march from their respective countries to Jerusalem. Almost all of them died and the Pope was preparing a new Crusade to avenge the loss of the children while reclaiming Jerusalem, which had fallen into Muslim hands 2 decades prior to the Fifth Crusade. In 1218, the Crusaders had mobilized at Acre and marched to Europe in an attempt to break the Muslim's strength there as most Arabic armies were conscripted from Egypt. The Crusaders had pushed the Muslims to offer peace terms which would see the revival of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, but some leaders declined this offer as they wanted to seize Egypt. As the Crusaders made camp at the Nile, the Sultan opened the sluice gates and flooded the Crusader army, thus destroying any chance they had of reclaiming Jerusalem. The song was made for the Kaiser, Kaiser Friedrich II of the Holy Roman Empire. According to some sources, the Kaiser was so moved by the song that he enfeoffed Walther von der Vogelweide with his own fief, land, and title.

Three things. Firstly, "that flag" is the Imperial War Flag of the Holy Roman Empire. Secondly, there's no such thing as "Celtic bagpipes". Bagpipes used to be spread all across Europe and beyond, the Irish, Bretons and Scots are just some of the few people who for some reason still think it sounds good. Thirdly, as for religious classes, yes. Every western country SHOULD have religious education in Judaism and Christianity, because without it, you simply can't understand vast stretches of our history. You may think you do. But you really don't.

I would argue that we should learn about religion in general, not just Christianity.

@@MaxSujyGermany Your point being either that children should be taught about every religion, against which I'd argue that Christianity and Judaism (and my point was to teach both, not "just Christianity" as you suggest) are unbreakably linked to our history, which ABSOLUTELY gives them priority over, for instance, goddamn Mundhumism (or if you would exclude that one, by which measure would you exclude religions?; and at which point does that not become hypocritical to your "religion in general" demand there?), same as you surely wouldn't suggest pushing Hinduism and / or Buddhism to the back of the box in South / East Asian countries; or your point being to do some "IT'S ALL LIES!" class which has exactly zero value to anyone ever? Help me here. It's all nice to be able to stand on a soapbox and make grand sweeping proclamations about how you want to do everything, but now suppose you tell me how you figure this would even remotely work.

"Your" history is about you, not the general picture. Not everyone in Germany is German. Some are immigrants, and some are German married to an Asian, etc, as I know many watching have said they are. Fyi, I'm Atheist, my point was just that if we ought to teach religion in school, it should be more broadly, for example: Christianity, Judaist, Islam, Buddhist and Hinduist. I don't know any other religion that is big enough to be worth studying for school purpose. And I don't mean raising your children with such religion, I mean as a school topic just like you have History and Geography.
@DeReAntiqua
@DeReAntiqua 4 ай бұрын
@@MaxSujyGermany Would you likewise adopt the opinion that all African, Arabic and Asian countries should be forced to teach European culture as well as Christian and Jewish religion? I'm an atheist as well, but what's more relevant is that I'm a historian, and you clearly still have not understood my point about WHY it's important to teach Christianity and Judaism first and most intensely. We're talking about a school subject, not some state-financed pleasure cruise. Please don't tell me you actually fall into this right-winger stereotype of the "braindead socialist" that is profoundly ignorant of history and of why studying it - and studying it CORRECTLY - is important. You keep talking about having a general or universal understanding, but you seem quite content with giving children the most superficial nonsense fest about the religion that shaped the country they're living in right now for TWO THOUSAND YEARS, and all just in the interest of being able to claim that you're oh so tolerant. How do you not get this? The study of German history and an understanding of Christianity that goes deeper than what you could fit on a two-page handout are UNBREAKABLY LINKED. Moving on to your picks for "religion". Firstly, why would you consider only those five when Chinese religion and Sikhism have significantly more adherents than Judaism then? Certainly, other than as an identity sub-point, Buddhism and Hinduism also don't have that much relevance on politics, wouldn't you agree? And Jainism and Zoroastrianism have regionally risen to higher significance than Hinduism in Europe as well. Plus, how would you conceivably go about teaching all those five groups even semi-'faithfully'? Because surely, you'll realise that there's no such thing as "Christianity". Now granted, I used the umbrella term before myself, but it should be self-evident I was talking about Roman Catholicism, Lutheranism and Reformism. With your demand for universally teaching everything, even restraining yourself to the bare minimum, you're having to deal with Roman Catholicism, Oriental Catholicism, Greek Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, Slavic Orthodoxy, Lutheranism, Reformism, Anglicanism, Post-Pietism, Quakerism and Mormonism, and that's before we even get into the smaller groups. Stack on top all sects of the other four umbrella groups you mentioned, and you're still faced with an unmanageable task. How much time do you think you wanna have schools devote to this? Are you gonna throw out the entire subjects of physics and geography, and abolish them learning any foreign languages? My guy, you live in a bit of a fantasy world. Here's the simple truth. What you want, all of that? Can't be done. LITERALLY impossible. You just demand all this stuff, but you never once use a single second on thinking about how you would even BEGIN to put that into practice. And I hope you don't do that when you try to convince people politically, because if I was a right-winger, it would be the easiest thing for me right now to go onto a whole rant about how that's just normal for socialists.

I do not care about who teach who what. You missed that part. I do not care about religion. If religion become illegal tomorrow I wouldn't care, get it? Were playing hypothetical about "if forced to learn religion at school what should we learn". Well, I grow up in Canada, a very diverse country. So from that pov I think we should learn about many religions, or none, nothing in between. Ngl, this is nerdy religious talk, and I absolutely don't care about religion. Regarding learning new languages, yes, I would put that as a high priority. Subjects that make people understand each other and the world more (not just the country you are in) is important. And funny how you talk about superficiality, but learning physics, history, etc, in high-school, is done in a very general and superficial way. Only when you go get an advance degree do you develop any kind of real knowledge (or if you develop a deep interest for it). My argument to learn more then 1 religion is to make people more tolerant, less racist, and so on. After 9/11, in Canada, we became very Islamophobic. The way classes are been taught in high-school is counter-productive and serve very little future purpose. Imo, classes should be interest-based starting in high-school (for the most part). Now, if you want to debate school in general, fine, but not religion, this is simply not a topic that interest me. Also, take a chill pill, you are way too agitated.
