Our Carefree of Colorado RV Slide Toppers both broke on us in the same week! Join Brian up on the roof of our motorhome to see what happened and to learn about what he's doing to temporarily disable/"fix" them. Buy a couple or so beach balls. Blow them to the desired size and slide under your toppers if you are expecting rain. Try it, you'll like it. Side bonus, so will the kids!

I really admire your skills in being able complete repairs on your RV. We just had all four of our slide toppers replaced after having the RV for eight years. Things are very crazy in FL right now with COVID. We are in Hollywood, FL (in between Miami and Ft.Lauderdale) in our sticks and stone condo and we are getting more and more restrictions as the number of cases are sky rocketing down here. Where are you headed in FL? Please be careful, stay healthy and safe, of course, safe travels!!

We're going to be in central FL and we're going to be as safe as we can be. We've been wearing our masks every time we go out, and we don't take the kids out shopping so we'll continue doing that while we're down there.

I really appreciate you and your wife's attitude when challenges present themselves. You understand the fragility of RVs and don't blame anyone else for what you know will at times have issues. See you on the road in 2022.

Absolutely! A lot of people are commenting about taking the rig into a dealer or calling a mobile mechanic. The dealer is probably a three month wait and big $$, and mobile mechanics cost more for one hour of work than one of the replacement toppers! We've got this 👍😁👍

Hi Brian and Erin!!! We can relate to those problems!! We had a camper that the awning completely snapped, one of the side arms came totally out of the side of the camper, and was flapping in the wind while on an interstate!!! Had to duct tape the whole thing down to the camper till we got home!! Was quite the adventure!!!

Oh man, I hope we avoid anything quite that dramatic! We're glad we caught that living room topper before bringing the slide in again, who knows how badly that would have gotten caught up in the slide or on the barrel...

To keep water from coming in when you retract the slides use your jacks to tilt the MH to the side the slide is on. Look at the RV Geeks, They replaced thiers and made a video on how to do it.

Slides should not leak just because there are no slide toppers. As you mentioned they are optional not required. Our travel trailer has no slide toppers and believe me we have had a lot of rain, mainly Florida thunderstorms and never had any water get in. You will be fine without them for a couple of weeks. Safe travels.

Thanks for the heads up on slide toppers! If we get a rig with slides & toppers that’s more than two years old I’ll go up there & tug on them myself to check their integrity. I like the idea of hanging out up there, could get some really great photos up there. A couple of pillows, a cold pop & a book & camera & I’d be set for some discrete photos of the campground denizens or better yet, nature.

A small rechargeable leaf blower works good in the event you don't replace or decide to get rid of the toppers... also I just bought a lions retractable ladder that won't chop off your fingers & is rated 350lbs for a big guy like my husband.... works great

If the new fabric doesn't hold up I'll just take the toppers all the way off. Our last rig didn't have them and it was annoying having to sweep off leaves and stuff, but it's not the end of the world for sure.

Just think, Brian, if you hadn’t had issues with the slide toppers you might never have seen the bees drinking your condensation runoff! Our 2007 Fleetwood has never had slide toppers and we haven’t had any real issues. If there’s standing water on the slide we will go up and squeegee off the top and sides before retracting. And unless you’re going to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area you have nothing to worry about. Elsewhere in most of the state numbers of hospitalization and deaths are mostly down, despite what the news media would have you believe. I live in Sarasota and life here is as close to normal as anywhere. Have a safe drive south and if you’ll be in my area I’d love to stop by and say Hi!

Slide toppers are like electric windows; nice and convenient but just "one more thing that can break down." I'll be honest... With as many problems as I've observed on other's channels (whereas slide toppers are concerned) I'm just not so sure they're necessary. Yes, without 'em you would need to go up on the roof before taking the slides in each time (to sweep off leaves, water and mop up any water on top of the slide) but you'd not have to worry about that expense and the inconvenience of the repair again. Just my take on 'em. BTW, get yourself a telescoping ladder so that you have it for the future; they're a good investment imo. Great video. Y'all travel and stay safe.

Zip ties and duct tape! Always need them. LOL We have a canvas awning on the deck of our beach house. The front of ours is always exposed to the elements. I took it off ans turned it around so the thread bare & raveled end is wound up on the bar. We never roll it out all the way, so it works for now. I purchased beautiful teal fabric to make a new awning one day. I just need white piping and time to make it. But I figured we might get 5 more years on this reversed side. At least it looks brand new. HUGS~Donna

A few set backs on toppers you found away to fix that's the way to go. Thinking about climbing up each time to broom off slides every-time you leave not my cup a tea. Be safe driving to Florida. Enjoy your travels 😎

We didn't have toppers on our last rig so I was popping up the ladder before moving when we were under trees, and frequently up there sweeping things off. It's pretty annoying to be honest. If the replacement fabric fails while we own this rig I'll probably just take everything off, but they're not very expensive so I'll give new ones a shot first.

RVGeeks have a couple great videos on replacing awnings. I love you’re use of zip ties. My sister is in central Florida. Publix has drive up & pickup. Just wear masks, wash your hands, have sanitizer & keep social distancing.

I watched all of their videos about slide toppers actually, but unfortunately the toppers on this rig are a pretty unique model and they didn't cover these. I was able to find the documentation and service manual though!

Many people slide a pool noodle or similar item under slide toppers to reduce effects of wind or puddling water. Long term, no fabric can tolerate the weather. One disadvantage of toppers.

I've heard pool noodles and beach balls, but man that sounds annoying - these rigs are TALL! 😂 Once I've got the new fabric on there I'll see how much it sags and make the decision about it after seeing it rain a few times.

ATTENTION: Don't go with Shade Pro slide toppers. We just replaced all (3) on our 2017 Bounder 36H with Shade Pro that have an extra hem on the sides. I thought that sounded like a great idea but after installing found out that the extra thickness of the side hem makes them hold water with no ability to drain. When I called the company to tell them they said that we should bring our slides in if it starts to rain. (lol) We now just carry a "L" hook to pull down one or the other end to drain the kiddie pool that forms. We will just have to replace them again with another brand. Hope this helps you.

Always get a NRVIA inspection before buying! That would have been caught and the sellers could fix or deduct from purchase price. They are expensive inspections but very thorough (they do around 8 hours of inspecting). Not to rub salt in your wound but to share for people looking to buy a new RV.

I was comfortable doing the inspection myself but if definitely recommend a professional one for others not as familiar with RVs. If they had caught the slide toppers I wouldn't have had time in FL to wait for new fabric to be sourced so I probably would've just ignored that line item anyway. It has also been three months since we bought the rig and it sat in the Colorado sun. It's not a big deal - the replacement fabric is actually way less than I thought it was going to be!

Wow... A bit of a disappointment for a 4 year old RV but the Florida sun is hard on anything that is exposed to it for any period of time... Your video is really helpful for others to check this on a potential rig or a rig they own now as maintenance is always better than failure.

Get two vice grip pipe clamps at harbor freight that will make your replacement job much easier. You will use the clamps all the time.

I saw people use those on other topper repairs but these are locked by those cotter pins so I shouldn't need them. Next time I'm near a harbor freight I'll grab a couple just in case though 👍👍

We bought it 3 months and 4k miles ago and didn't get a used warranty so they're not obligated to do anything. On top of that, it would cost more in gas to get the rig there and back than the replacement topper fabric was 😋

Most rv slides don't have slide toppers. They don't leak. It's more of an issue the a slide awning.

Our last rig didn't have slide toppers and we didn't have any issues with them. It was annoying bringing them in while it was raining though, which was one thing nice about the toppers on this rig.

Looks like you just need screen rubber edge core and some flex seal paint for the fabric. Just thought. That rubber should allow you to push into the wedge on the RV and the paint can seal the fabric itself and get you some life out it.

That sounds possible, but I really don't know if that would hold up. There's quite a bit of tension pulling outward on that fabric. That plus the old fabric is all stretched out and pooling really badly when it rains. The new fabric that I ordered is double stitched and a tougher material so it should hold up much better.

The way the Toppers are ruined in the center I think they are helping the rain flow into the RV instead of preventing it and running off the sides of the slide you're probably better off without the Toppers it seems like that's what's causing the problem now

We haven't replaced that door knob yet. We've gotten used to moving through the hallway without hitting it so it may be ok, but I'm keeping half an eye out for something slimmer.

It looks like since the topper is attached on the end of the slide out but not at the base of the RV roof and attached on the corners but not in the Center so all the rainwater that sitting on the slide out topper is going to be funneled directly into the center of the topper into the RV I would just take the toppers off and let the rain water flow off the sides of the slide same as all other slides that don't have a Topper. I don't think a piece of canvas topper is supposed to be the stopper of the rain I think it's a bigger issue with the slide and the caskets.

A simple beach ball under the fabric keeps water from setting up and stretching it out 👀 if u pop the ball ur only out 3 bucks 😆

Replace using Sunbrella fabric. Weather resistant for 10 years in my case.

Mobile RV techs are incredibly expensive and this is something I can handle. With some of the rates I've seen them charge the new fabric costs less than one hour of their time!

Just some friendly advice the owning over the bed you will need to Buddies to help you with that the one over the living room you will need at least four people to put that in good luck and don't get too frustrated

These toppers go on a little differently than the other models I've seen in videos online so it should be possible with just the two of us. If the living room slide gets too heavy I'm sure I can rope in some friendly campers for a beer or two 😋

No, used warranties are a complete waste of money on RVs just like they are on used cars. We also don't have the ability to go back to a specific dealership for warranty work because we're fulltimers.

Does the slide bobble up and down when you sit on bed or dining bench with the canvas disconnected. I thought the canvas helped stabilize the slider. Yes No. maybe. We’re brand newbies and have an awning torn

The slide topper is a completely optional piece of equipment and has no effect on the slide other than keeping the top clean. When an RV slide is run out all the way it "locks" in place. If your slides move independently of the rest of your RV when you put your weight inside them, that could mean something is broken. A torn awning or slide topper is caused by age, weather, or tree limbs.

The info is great and so important. I went and bought a bunch of the stuff you explained in newbie rv’ers. Have u ever had a slide break before. Is it safe to drive like that. The things we've had issues with are parts that wear out over time anyway. We knew there would be some worn items when buying a used RV, just like there would be with a car or a house.

I know we have had a few problems on our 2016 we bought. I just wish they would have looked our over and repaired the small things such as they did not change oil and air filter was filthy and looked like mice had been chewing on it. Especially with something with an engine. We do have a slide awning that looks loose also.

Five2Go lol different question. Not implying you’re big but, how much weight can rv roofs support? Was there any give when you were up there? Any creaking while up there? Is it possible to put a couple folding chairs up there to chill like in the walking dead series?

RV roofs are pretty sturdy actually. I'd be worried about ripping the roof with chairs, but you could definitely have 3-4 adults up there with no problem I imagine. If zombies are in the picture, I'd be a bit more aggressive about the number of people up there and less worried about ripping the roof 😂

You're most likely right. I have no idea what went on with this rig before we bought it and it was from Florida so it definitely could've just been outside in the elements for a long time.

What’s the purpose of your videos? I thought it was to experience your travels with you but all I’ve seen are talking and everything repairs. Also, can you use waterproof tarps to keep the slopes dry until your fabric arrives? Fl has almost daily afternoon thunderstorms.

The slides can get rained on, slide toppers are an optional upgrade that helps keep debris off so you don't have to get up on the roof and sweep the slides off before bringing them in. There's no reason to worry about covering them before the new fabric comes in.

This should have been replaced at the dealer before you took delivery. This dealer has a bad reputation. Lots of complaints. Bring it back to them and make them fix it at no cost to you.

I checked it out when I was down there and they looked used but ok. Plus we're nowhere near that dealer so it would cost me as much in gas as the replacement fabric will cost. No big deal!

Did you not inspect the camper before you bought it it’s a four year old camper what you think if it was a four year old camper that those things were dry rot and you would notice why wouldn’t you have check that out that sounds like a big boneheaded move on your part for buying the thing to begin with and not checking out things before you buy it

Thanks for your input Paul, but I inspected it top to bottom and did see that the slide toppers were obviously a bit worn from age and weather. Neither of them were damaged and short of dumping buckets of water on them there's no way to know how much they were sagging since everything was dry. The fabric is not expensive to replace so it's really not that big of a deal - I was more worried about the important and expensive parts of the motorhome.
