The new AFO's are awesome! That is so cool that they articulate. Maybe it will be easier for walking with his walker. Also, if his shoes weren't so long, maybe he would be able to walk easier as well and not drag or trip over them. I think it wouldn't frustrate him as much and maybe he'd be willing to try more or not be soooo tired when he was finished with therapy 🤔 Have a great day family! 🌞

I work in a special needs preschool and have experienced both Billy brand and Plae brand shoes with AFOs! I love the simplicity of Billy and the added perk of independence with the zipper. Sometimes we clip a key ring to the zipper for a little extra something for the kids to hold and pull. Plae brand are durable, I've seen pairs last a whole school year, have a flexible sole and have grippy tabs on the velco for independence.

Leon's AFO's are so cool and so are his new sneakers. When I had to get my son braces I always had to buy him wide width(EEEE) as well. He has wide feet to begin with so add the braces he needed EEEE width. He is 6"2 yet his shoe size was only and 81/2. Leon is going to rock those braces. You go Leon!!

Hi Jody and John, I love keeping up with your adorable family. I like to wait until I have a few videos and make a marathon of JJ Time. It drives my husband nuts because I will sit on the couch and literally watch a week's work of your blogs on a Saturday morning. Who needs Saturday Morning Cartoons when there is your lovely family to catch up with. 🤣 I thank you for sharing your journey to find shoes that fit AFO's. I was born with Clubfeet and as an adult now wear one AFO and have one of my ankles fused. The fusion was the 6th full surgery to repair my feet. I had the hardest time finding shoes that fit properly. I actually go to the Nordstrom kids' department ( I have really tiny feet from the surgeries). They really know how to fit one for shoes. I highly recommend them for finding shoes that fit with AFO's. If you order online, you can return them to the store at any time. They do not bat an eye and will go out of their way to help you find just the right shoe for what you need them for plus they carry the Billy shoes. I wear the Billy high tops and find them so easy to wear with my AFO. I would wait though until the next pair of shoes for Leon because they are working on coming out with a line that is wide. As a special needs teacher, I have told everyone about the Billy shoes for kids with CP or other developmental delays. The zipper promotes independence. Sorry for the wordiness but you guys are just so awesome that I had to share my experience finding shoes for AFOs. You guys make me smile. Sarah

Now those are great AFOs! I wish they were like that when I was younger. I had articulated ones and then transitioned to the one piece. We would get a binder of options for designs. You may want to look into Reeboks for shoes. They are AFO-friendly. My designs were butterflies, tie-dyes and now they’re very simple.

I swear by Billy's for my daughters AFOs! You can order them off Amazon and that way it will be easy to return them if they are the wrong size! My daughter just got new AFOs too and I had to return a pair of Billy's because I went a size to big :)

I think New Balance is known for all their shoes being made wider than other brands. I've known so many people over the years that only wear NB for that very reason. Leon's looking awesome in his new kicks. Can you explain (only if you want to) why Leon has to wear braces and what they're hoping to accomplish by wearing them? I know you explained his foot tilting in, but was just wondering what, overall, doctors are hoping to accomplish after Leon wears the braces. Thanks.

Other brands you can look for are plae, and tshukhosi shoes brands I have had luck with and stride rite has specific ones for Afo.

Alyssa hates hospitals so much she won't even go visit others in the hospital. Bless him. it is so cool that they give you shoes. We don't get shoes with ours. Watch that articulation when you are taking them on and off. It will pinch the sh** out of you! I get Alyssa Billy shoes one size up, and most of the time Sketchers. I will have to find some extra wide ones. Alyssa was so excited to see Theo holding his own bottle.
