Hi Lil, I read this book last night in one go. I think it will be my favorite book of 2021. Even though it was written so long ago, parts of it reflected my life and my own memoir. Parts of it were so hysterical, I laughed until I cried. Some of it made me angry. I've known poverty but never at that extent. Sometime this month I will do a review. Thank you so much for recommending this book to me. Much love and Aloha.

Sounds like a great book - on my wish list it goes. Just the fact that you were thinking about Sophia when not reading makes me think it must be special.

I loved Our Spoons Came From Woolworths. After I read it it stayed with me for months afterwards. I couldn't believe how selfish Charles and his family were to Sophia. Having a baby back then would be terrifying, especially if you were poor. Have you read The Vet's Daughter? It was also excellent. I thought about that one for months afterward too. I haven't been able to get Sisters by a River. I really want that one too. Have you read it?

I do certainly have a book hangover, I haven't been able to pick up a fiction since. I am on the non-fiction at the moment. I own both the vets daughter and sisters by a river but haven't read either yet. I hope I love them just as much

Thank you for this review! it has been on my tbr list for a while now and I was just thinking of taking a break of newer books to return to older reads. Have you read her book "Who was changed and who was dead"? and if you have, is the mood similar in this one? And whenever you can could you make a video with an updated list of your favourite books/authors similar to this? early 20th century focused on women? I'm a big fan of Barbara Pym too and I'm always looking for similar things!

I started it last night and it's so delightful! it's nothing like who was changed which is imho darker, drier in style and mood. Sophia taking Great Warty in her pocket to her wedding! so far there have been so many little details like that which I'm not expecting and make it really charming.

Fantastic isn't it? so sweet and fun at times but so dark and sad in others. what do you think of Charles?

Sophia has just taken Sandro home from the hospital so I'm a bit under half the book, I don't know if that's early to give an opinion on Charles but so far he's such an useless husband and awful father, a selfish man who never should have married anyone. I probably could even like him if he was in a book about single men shenanigans, but here he's just deplorable. Sophia doesn't think of him as a bad husband but she has to keep doing everything by herself, like she thinks if she'll be able to take the pram to the studio after the baby is born, the thought that Charles can take care of baby since he stays home doesn't even cross her mind, or when she's getting her things ready for the hospital, she does everything herself as well, and the horrible things he has said to her about the baby, or spending the money they get without even consulting her and she doesn't even get mad about it. I guess he'll get worse from now on, but I can't quite decide if the people reading the book when it was published would think him as bad as I do or he'd be about average.
