In today's episode, we cross over from Brazil into one of the least visited countries in South America: Paraguay. We show you the quirks and peculiarities of this country's second largest city Ciudad Del Este. From giant shopping malls to South America's largest dam, it's definitely one of our most randomly treasured travel memories to date!

We are Oskar & Dan, two boys from Sweden who decided to change the course of our lives, drop out of university and live life full-time. We're planning to visit every country in the world before we're 30 with an initial goal of 100 before the end of 2022. By the time of posting this video, we're both 24 :)
Paraguay was country #81/197🌍
We crossed into Ciudad Del Este, Paraguay from Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil. This is exactly what many Brazilians do to go shopping in the tax-free shopping haven on the other side of the border.
Thank you for watching!🙏😍

Hi oscar and Dan, well there is a small mistake at the beginning, actually, Paraguay has access to two important rivers Parana and Paraguay river and they are our way out to the ocean, They are so important that Paraguay has developed the third largest fleet of barges in the world only behind China and USA. There’s no official “Apple store” in Paraguay so this retail store sell the products in whatever price they find convenient. Also, the taxes for electronic in Paraguay are crazy because of the location that is land locked. To be honest the prices are not bad at all compared to Asuncion!
@karaiwonder

There are no taxes for electronics in Ciudad del Este is you are a foreigner. And yes, prices can vary wildly depending on the store and season and when the cargo ships arrive. Now due to the supply chain worldwide crisis the price of iPhones in ciudad del este is quite high but during “normal” times, they were equiparable to the prices in US Apple stores. I bought my iPhone XS there for the same price I would have paid in the USA

Paraguay has plenty of historic sites to visit from colonial times. There are multiple ruins that were once Jesuit settlements and were later abandoned and took over by the jungle. Also its capital city is at the shore of Paraguay River and tributary of Parana River, one of the biggest rivers in the World.

Ok so I live in Paraguay and have lived here for 10 years now. Did y'all know that in the Chaco (with is the Northern/Western half of Paraguay) there are mennonite (explaining what mennonites is waaaay to long ahaha) colonies, also known as the German speaking colonies? Oh! and Paraguay has a lot of "Achievements " in history. For example, we had the first train in all of South America 😌!... that's pretty cool, even though we dont have trains anymore lmao. We were also once considered themost advanced country in South America (that was at the beginning)... aaaaandddd our "Independence day" is actually 2 days because it happened over two days (through midnight). I have seen and visited many other countrys and I have to say that Paraguay is definetly the most interesting country I know (trust me, I'm not biased) BUT THANK YOU GUYS FOR VISITING OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY 🤩! ¡Vive Paraguay!

Hi from Paraguay! 🇵🇾 1. Stores open very early in CDE and close at around 4pm 2. Wish you could have tried some Paraguayan food, I literally LOVE our food. You missed out on chipa, mbeju, sopa paraguaya, chipaguasu, etc. 3. Tereré is really an "aquired taste", we make every foreigner try it but you have to get used to it and then you'll like it. We love it in the hot days, it's refreshing 4. There are some really beautiful places in Paraguay 5. Paraguay was actually very developed before the "Triple Alianza" war. But imagine going to war against three countries. And then a war against Bolivia. It sadly devastated Paraguay. There was even a war where children had to fight because there were no men left, Batalla de Acosta Ñu 6. Paraguayans are very welcoming and friendly people Hope you visit again! 😊

Paraguay is beau-ti-full! I'm from Belgium and I went on an exchange to Paraguay in 2018-2019 and lived there for 10 months. Met my boyfriend there, a Paraguayan ofcourse, and his family is so warming. Paraguayan people are the best! they take you into their family like you are their own child! I just fell in love with the country and the people, literally. I have also been to Itaipu and it's massive. I understand the feeling you are talking about. You feel like you are so little. Ciudad de Este is an amazing city where literally everything is possible. As I like to describe myself: soy Belga de sangre, pero Paraguaya de corazón. And oh, about the Iguaçu Falls, they make you silent. You will just stand there and watch them and not be able to say something. They are so impressive! Nice video you guys! I will definitely watch more video's of you

Hey guys! I’m from Brazil, I live in the same state as Foz do Iguaçú, and yes, electronics are super overpriced here! The US$ 799 iPhone 13 is sold here in Brazil for 7599 Brazilian Reais, which is about 1300 dollars with the current exchange rates. It’s kind of insane. Paraguay used to be a no-brainer for me and my family when purchasing expensive items. Today since the Real has suffered big devaluation against the dollar, the advantages are not as big as before (when we could basically pay for a weekend trip to Foz do Iguaçu in a nice hotel just with the savings from choosing to buy things in Paraguay instead of Brazil), but they still exist.

Another issue is that bargaining is common in small shops so you end up paying lees than the price you are given first. However in larger stores like cellshop, mega electronicos or nissei prices are significantly lower than argentina and Brasil.

So I think it’s about practice and learn from the criticism🤔 It’s difficult to send your manga since you are overseas but maybe you can learn by reeding another artist books, things like story composition , easy-to-understand frame division, character’s setting etc. And ask your friends to read your manga so they can share what they think. Hi guys! For your question at 8:16 about pricing and savings... Well, you can sum up that by understanding that here in Paraguay there are not OFFICIAL stores from many international brands e.g. Apple. For instance, most of the prices youll see, are just arbitrary prices set by the very own sellers. And yes, prices of the very same items from Brazil are even higher, for that reason, is a great deal for many brazilians to come by and buy staff not only in C.D.E, but from all over Paraguay like P.J.C, Asuncion, Encarnacion, etc. Nice video and thnx to come by!

Hey Guys!! Im from Foz do Iguaçu, and I used to live the past 2 years in NY, so I know the real prices, and yes things are a little overpriced in PY and A LOT in Brazil. In Brazil mainly because of the taxes for imported products, its HUGE and also the currency devaluation, our economy is going down everyday. In PY that also happens, but in smaller proportions because their economy runs around the dollar currency. I hope you guys went to do a little city tour also in Ciudad del Este, because the city is huge and has a lot of culture, Paraguai is actually a very friendly country and I love telling everybody how beautiful it is! I know covid made you see a little less than expected, but hopefully you'll have the chance to see more the country has to offer one day! xx

Heyy Guys! I’m from brazil and literally live near Iguassú Falls so i can explain some of your questions. First o all, most of the malls you saw didn't close because of Covid, some have been closed for years because of the unstable structure of the building. second, being Brazilian I can say that it is very worthwhile to cross the border and buy in Paraguay. in comparison, an iPhone 13 pro max 128gb costs US$1630 in Brazil, in Paraguay it costs US$1500. it may not seem like much, but it's like R$1000 reais of difference. My favourite mall in PY is Nissei Mall and Cell Shop Mall, they are the biggest and the best, you should have visited :( ! Hope your trip through Brasil was great! xoxo

I live in Brasília and the culture of buying in Paraguai is so strong that we have a market big enough to be called a shopping mall called ''Feira do Paraguai'' ''Market from Paraguai'' Edit: Yes here in Brasil due to taxes some people go to Paraguai or even to the US buy phones, for example the New iPhone 13 Pro Max in Brasil costs R$15.500 (for an idea i paid R$16.000 for my CAR) about $2.800 dollars, in the US the phone costs like $1.100 $1.600 the highest

Downtown in ciudad del este, as chaotic as it is during daytime, is deas during night. You should spend the afternoon around lago de la República and then head to the bars nearby

Hola buenísimo vídeo, la yerba del tereré que te hizo probar es muy fuerte, hay de los que son con menta que tienen un sabor más agradable y suave, sobre todo refrescante. 😊

You're lucky you went to Ciudad del Este instead of Asunción. But anyways, Ciudad del Este is like the shopping for Paraguay and Asunción is just the place we must go for paperwork. The actual cultural stuff is found in the rural areas of Paraguay. Probably you won't come back but for anyone planning to visit Paraguay for the first time, please don't stay on Asunción that place sucks. You can come to Encarnación instead, or you can go to a trip to Paso Patria which is an awesome place too.

Hi guys! Another great video! Oskar, how did you learn to speak and understand spoken Spanish so well? Truly impressed, and envious! As mentioned in a previous message, I have very little knowledge of Spanish yet I would like to return to South America. Having been there before, I learned quickly that knowing some Spanish is a great asset. Thanks guys! Love your videos!

I'm looking forward to the Iguazu falls video! When we where in 2017 in Argentina we could only visit the Brazilian side because of a big cat type of animal wandering around the National Park. So the park ranger closed the park. The Brazilian side was perhaps even more beautiful :) I discovered the Guaraná Antarctica drink in Portugal and is indeed delicious :)
