Today our new Suffolk Punch stallion horse, Baron, meets his brothers, Duke & Earl! Watch them in the pasture getting to know each other a little better. Jim & the Belgians horses mow hay in the pasture. Then, we share the contest results for guessing Barron's weight and hear who the five winners are of a new hat!
If you are a winner, email us your address! ► workinghorseswithjim@yahoo.com

It's a pleasure watching the new horses, even though it's tough hearing & seeing them sort out herd dynamics. I realize, it's reality, that's what they do. You could hide all the "drama" from those viewers who aren't familiar with horse behavior, but then you wouldn't be true to who you are, real people doing real farming, real life. Thanks for keeping things real. I imagine as viewership increases, it's tempting to change your filming to please new viewers. As a newbie tubey host myself, I hope you stay true to your original reasons for starting your channel, it's a joy to watch you both (& your daughters.)

That was amazing to watch! 😃 I could almost hear Ken telling Earl, "I'm high horse here and you're the low horse. Our positions are set in stone. We don't need to get involved. We're going to stay out of it while Duke and Barron battle it out for 2nd & 3rd position" 🤣🤣 I just love Kenny. He has the kindest eyes but he won't take any Guff off the youngsters 😁 That's a leader.

For me, this was your best video, in my opinion. When I was a kid a neighbor bought two Belgian stallions and I had the opportunity to watch them "get to know each other." It looked rough to me but the farmer explained it was just a process and wouldn't last long. In the years that followed I spent many hours watching Buck and Louie work side by side in perfect unison.

Indeed, if you ever witness a real stallion to stallion fight about leadership of a heard, you will understand that this was just childsplay compared to what wild stallions go through.

Wow, my guess at Baron's weight was way off--like, by the size of a small pony! I mean I thought he looked smaller than the others, but wow, he's way smaller than I thought. Congrats to those who got it close!

When my family had a boarding stable the horses always stood as close to the house as possible. We never gave treats at that end of 3 different paddocks so they weren't begging. I thought they were spying on the people, pain and simple. Even if we didn't hand out goodies people came and went, vehicles came and went. Funny as it was, they stood in the hot sun to watch us when the other end of the paddocks had nice roomy shade. So, just like with your currently muddy spot, the ground in the paddocks toward the house was bare of grass and muddy when wet. For some reason cows and horses think we are worth watching!

It's interesting how Ken has been keeping Earl away from Baron and Duke, letting them sort out the hierarchy. I guess "Uncle Ken" already knows that Duke is more dominant and is telling Earl to stay back and watch. Horse dynamics are pretty interesting especially between 3 young stallions and a dominant older gelding. Good boy Ken, for keeping those shenanigans under control, or at least trying to.

Not being a knowledgeable "horsey" person, it was an eye opening video to see your horses reacting they way they did amongst each other !! Let's hope and pray they settle down really SOON and just get along !! I take it that is quite normal among young horses. Is that what you call sibling rivalry ? I was hoping that Jim would give us more details of this sort of behavior among horses. I KNOW I wouldn't want to get in a fight with one of your horses, Jim !! I'm more of a lover, not a fighter !! Tee Hee !! Otherwise, it was a great video, Jim and Brenda !! 😊

@@johnking8679 Yes, it is normal behavior. It's also normal for puppies and kittens. Kittens tend to grow up and leave each other for a more solitary life, but dogs, horses, and humans continue living in groups and getting in fights. This is why it's a good idea to have stallions gelded once they reach full size, so they will be calmer and more manageable (unless you intend to breed them). Not only young males, but any horses will fight and bicker, especially any time someone decides to challenge someone else's rank in the herd. I once saw a mature mare get moved to an unfamiliar pen, then someone moved a smaller stallion into the pen next to her. They immediately started arguing (like the neighing noises in this video). For some reason, there was no water barrel in the stallion's pen, but the mare's water barrel was in the corner next to his pen. So she made a show of drinking her water to prove it was hers, and to prove she was dominant. He tried to get his head between the bars, but he couldn't reach her water. They also tried pawing at each other through the bars of the pens. I've also seen videos of horses having grazing competitions when they got tired of biting and kicking.

The old farmer that I worked for told me the story of his uncle who had two stallions that hated each other and would tangle at every opportunity. One day when they got at each other, his uncle had had enough and grabbed a 6ft piece of 4 X 4, went out to where they were going at it and cold-cocked them both between the eyes. They both dropped to their knees, got back up and never fought again.

Your filming with or without good audio had my heart pounding watching every second to see what happened to the horses. It was amazing that Ken seem to know what was needed for a fair fight. Ken must pay attention to the younglings knowing how they react together. Understanding how to introduce a new horse to the packed without the younglings double teaming Baron. Seemed Ken handled the situation until they had tired out some. Amazing, just so natural. God's Creation working in tandem with God himself. Horses earning their keep almost provided for themselves by mowing the grasses and Ken watching over the introductions. Jim knowing who had to meet and except the new horse first, etc.

We also live in western Oregon & since midnight we have had .86 " rainfall! Our grass field for our horses looks just like yours! Wet , soggy & damp. The front of our barn INSIDE the doors has 4" to 6" of muddy water. We also have 3 stallions on our thoroughbred farm. The two 1/2 brothers sometimes open the front doors of the barn & also play rough but never really harm each other. They just race each other in the front of the farm along the county road (on our side of the fence of course), scaring the dickens out of our other local farmers when the 2 of them pass their trucks playing & running with each other. Your sickle bar mower gives us ideas of mowing our main field using real horse power instead of $5+ gallon Ford 8N horsepower. Our thoroughbreds would have more than enough power, especially our Seattle Slew line sire as he has strength enough to easily break down 2" X 12" barn walls as well at times 6" wood fence posts! Enjoy watching your horses & equipment.

From what I have seen on some other channels with horses it might have been a good idea to have put Baron in a field adjacent to the others for a day at first to get over the initial nonsense where they can’t get to fight each other. Then gradually get them together. They definitely can inflict some serious damage to each other. I was glad to see you pick up those sticks …… right before you actually did it I was thinking it would be a good idea. When the horses are having a go at each other they are definitely not paying much attention to where they step and could easily damage a hoof. Also, in that muddy paddock next to the building there are some broken concrete block and some rocks that they could stumble on. Hopefully by now the colts have all worked out their pecking order and don’t beat up on each other so vigorously.

It's like the sound of dinosaurs. This reminds me of the Jurassic park games where you watch other dinosaurs interact with eachother like this lol.

Yes I've a friend that is a pseudo cowboy and he goes to trailrides occasionally and when he started he was up set that his stud horse was not allowed. It was because a few of the regular riders had mares that were going into heat... and he didn't understand how that could present problems

My horse is just a gelding and he does the same exact thing when he meets new horses for the 1st time. Basically i let them sort it out. This is all normal behavior. They are in no way hurting each other

Definitely enjoyed this one Jim! One of your best. Thanks for exposing us to stallions pecking behavior. Fascinating. Brenda took some really good 👍footage of the mowing of the hay field. She captured Beautiful colors up there in upstate NY. Requests please? a. More insider farming tips from Jim. e.g. cutting hay at different time frames. b. Definitely interested with your horse drawn equipment. Perhaps a new series? on the mechanical parts and how the parts move for example on your mower. I find the simple implements fascinating. Thanks for considering Brenda and Jim 👍...

I am glad the boys done good as they did the first time they were together. Even with 2 stallions in same area one might have been the only one that came out of a fight let that or all could have been killed. Well I hope you all are doing good? We are ok here.

Jim, thanks for tips on cutting back field 1/3 @ a time. As newer draft/land owners, we need all the tips we can get. Totally of video subject, but Brenda, as one "older" lady to another- love that your letting the grays alone & not coloring over them. It's been so difficult hearing other women ask why don't I color my gray hair. Nice to know I am not alone. It looks great on you. I haven't seen your hair down before watching this video, it's very becoming. I think the Bible says "a woman's hair is her glory," or something similar. At age 55, I choose to let my hair grow long & go gray, for now anyway. So far, it touches my waistline & looks like gray highlights around my face. I like it & hubby likes it, that's all I need. Anyway, thanks for allowing other ladies to see that going gray can be beautiful.

Hi, this is Brenda, thanks for the comment gray hair. It is something I have been wanting to do for a long time and a few months back just decided do it and haven't regretted it for one day since! And I too, have no intentions of cutting my hair. Silver sisters unite!

@@WorkingHorsesWithJim Yes Brenda, silver sisters solidarity! We own every year of wisdom these gray hairs represent. Those years didn't all come easy, not all were sunshine & roses, but we overcame adversity & are alive to share a wealth of wisdom with those younger ladies who are willing to listen. Love it.
