Our Sun Puts on a Far Side Show While Earth Waits | Space Weather News 16 June 2024

This week our Sun sends the bulk of activity to the farside. Region 3697 continues to launch strong events, but they are hammering Mars instead of Earth this week. At our planet, we are dealing with low-level radio blackouts from Region 3712 and a few mini solar storms, but we have one mystery. There is a solar storm that has a clear signature in coronagraphs but no clear signature on the solar disk itself. As such, the agencies disagree as to whether or not the storm is Earth-directed. I will be in South Africa in a month in the northeast part of the country. What should i expect for the weather? I've also seen news on South Africa election protests, will that be a problem for foreign researchers like me?

Once again, you explain things so skilfully and simply. One question I have is what effect nearby planets suffer from ICMEs. Mercury sure does get the worst of it. And I know our rovers on Mars are walloped by ICMEs. It's also good that all those solar fireworks are happening on the back side of the sun and not at us. The ICC crew and high-flying pilots would be getting irradiated by all the solar ejecta and X-ray radiation.

Wow, I'm very impressed with how detailed the video explains space weather events. It is useful to know that there are also small magnetic storms aimed at Earth this week, although they do not cause too much trouble. Expect some Aurora but it looks like mid-latitude photographers will have to wait longer.

Just thought as a Brit I should point out that the town of Reading where the university is that you mention is pronounced "redding" not "reading" like reading a book... totally illogical I know, catches many people out. Thanks for all these detailed forecasts which are very helpful for all us radio DXers.

Yes, thank you. Others have pointed out the same. Sadly, my initial instinct was to pronounce it as "Redding" but then I did a quick check online and got multiple sites that said it should be pronounced "Reading" and presumed my insight was wrong. Ugh. I wish I had gone with my gut!
