If it's got people who aren't even into anime raving then it really must be something.

In my opinion Maines death is a symbol that shows he's at the end of the road and his time has come and less about his past! He was on the edge and heading straight over!

David's tale in Edgerunners is a perfect cautionary tale about what happens to those in Night City who think they are special and get swept up in the storm. After Maine died, the city won - it was just a slow victory. He decided to carry on Maine's legacy to chrome his way all the way to the sun and back without turning downgrading regardless of what the people around him were saying and by the end of it, David died in part because he believed that his tolerance for cyberware was enough to rise above it all.

I disagree with the (mainly Franks) point that the show relied heavily on the "games to do most of it's world-building". I've introduced the show to two friends who have never interacted with the world of Cyberpunk before. One of whom I watched along with them for my second viewing. My counter would be that the world doesn't need 'building' from the game, but rather that the game gives much broader depth to what is shown and talked about. It's not 'necessary' material to interact with the show in any capacity. (Although, this counter also depends on what level of knowlege you personally define as "world-building"). The way things like healthcare (eg. Davids mom; Trauma Team, treatment and ultimately cremation) is handled so matter-of-factly by all characters involved will be shocking and surprising to those unfamiliar with the world, but it does a good enough job to immediately set the expectaion of "oh wow, that's how fucked things are here I guess" I'll use Cyberware as another example: You get just enough out of the show to understand perfectly that these are enhancements one can make to your body, and that having too many of them can drive you insane. From a story and even world-building perspective, that's pretty much all you need to know. The games and knowledge of the world bring extra flavour, but it's certainly not a bland dish without it.

These are really great points, thanks Lewis! I think that it is a good point where you do get just enough from the show to understand the world and how it operates. Things like the streetslang that they use definitely could be hard to follow if you're unfamiliar with those terms, but you're right it doesn't necessarily take away from the experience for new folks.

@@MissMagitek I think even the streetslang is used contextually enough within the first 1-2 episodes to understand. It's used sparingly enough to not be overwhelming and the ones that do get used often like 'Choom', 'Chrome' and 'Nova' are all understood after just the first few uses. Though, perhaps as Aussies we're used to hearing any random slang and immediately understanding the contextual meaning, haha!

Almost all the locations in the show are in 2077. David lived in Megabuilding H4 which is in Arroyo. There is an Edgerunner easter egg in 2077 in front of the building. Also you can get Rebecca's shotgun "Guts" in the park in front of Arasaka Tower.

it would be awesome if you guys do a role play with an edgerunner theme to it. Like tweak cyberpunk red to kinda fit in this world. idk. I keep thinking of ideas, but i dont have friends that would actually sit and play an rpg.

As much as I enjoyed the game (video; I skipped the TRPG) and the show, I quibble with the universal motivation of all characters being to die in a blaze of glory., Night City is peppered with people who survived & are doing just fine (like Rogue or even Johnny Silverhand if you pick that ending). I think that core motivation is part of why the TRPG flamed out in the 90s and Red had limited impact--it's simply too narrow a goal. Similarly, if Edgerunners gets a second season & repeats the beats of the first (another dead protagonist) it won't do as well because those beats will be predictable--Cyberpunk needs a wider footprint to expand interest.

I actually agree with you if you read "going down in a blaze of glory" as the goal of these stories. I read it a bit differently as "escaping Night City" and that is the ultimate goal. In what could be a literal sense (leaving the city to go elsewhere) or figurative sense (making enough money that it can't hurt you). But I did not read David's motivation as burning hot and brightly and then going down.

@@Mirhi I agree about David, I was thinking more of the game in terms of thrust (where the only option ever presented to V or as V's motivation is that blaze of glory). David's is much better in that sense, just as overall I think the show is better than the game at offering a fuller slice of Cyberpunk (a lacking I think was fueled by the fact that the story of the game is basically Johnny's, not V's).

@@arttuluttinen Agree completely that the show showcases a more rounded view of Night City and the differing motivations of characters.

Interesting, I think that the whole No Future attitude of the eighties was interwoven throughout the Cyberpunk game. When will the bomb drop , when will the apocalypse happen? Better to burn up than to fade away! Considering that in RED survival the bomb has been dropped and a sort of apocalypse happened, people are more focused on rebuilding and surviving. So shouldn't there be a shift to those two goals?
