#Top-5LuxurySUVs
This is a Motormouth couple car review of the top-5 luxury compact SUVs. There are many brands to choose from and all have high and low points, so we have come up with our top-5, in alphabetical order and you tell us which one you would choose.
Acura RDX
Pros: Roomy cabin and cargo area, lots of available tech and a good looking interior with very little hard plastic. Flat floor in the back makes it comfortable for middle seat passengers. Great vehicle for a growing family.
Cons: Track pad is difficult to use, there’s only one powertrain option and only two trims in Canada, but plenty of trims in the US making it quite an affordable option in the US.
Audi Q5
Pros: Great all-rounder, it does everything really well and appeals to a lot of buyers with its light steering and easy handling.
Cons: Needs an interior update, the screen seems like an afterthought sitting on top of the dash and with the removal of the centre console dial, there are some odd storage solutions. Although some may love the lighter steering, I also think that is a negative for some.
BMW X3
Pros: Excellent handling SUV, engaging and entertaining. The steering is heavier than what you would find in the Q5 but you can change the heaviness of it depending on the drive mode you are in. BMW is moving more to a lighter steering feel. The infotainment system is fantastic, we like the option of controlling the screen at the centre console or using it as a touchscreen and this is a spacious compact SUV.
Cons: The interior isn’t as nice as we expected, BMW added a fair amount of hard plastic to the cabin. The leather seats can look cheap.
Genesis GV70
Pros: Strong performing engines, precise steering, smooth, quiet and upscale cabin, very beautiful interior.
Cons: Small rear seat, no wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, sometimes we mix up the rotary dial and infotainment dial at times, they are very close together.
Lexus NX
Pros: Updated technology including, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, fully heated steering wheel, Lexus Safety System 3.0 and safe exit assist, comfortable cabin and 4 powertrain options including a hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The hybrid model is priced well and is our favourite NX model.
Cons: The run-flat tires can get a little bit loud depending on the pavement you are driving on,
piano black interior on the lower trims, could look a little more upscale for a Lexus on those
So the list is Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Genesis GV70 and the Lexus NX. We also have some honourable mentions for brands like the:
Alfa Romeo Stelvio
Two powertrain options, a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 280 horsepower and 306 lb-ft of torque. The Quadrifoglio the more powerful Stelvio gets 505 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque.
Porsche Macan
Three powertrain options, the base model has a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 7-speed automatic transmission, 261 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Other models available include the Macan S with 375 horsepower and the GTS, 434 horsepower. A Macan EV is coming soon.
Mercedes-Benz GLC
There is a new GLC model coming this year, but surprisingly this one holds up and is a great choice. The interior feels luxurious, the drive is refined, quick acceleration and the cabin is well insulated.
Powertrain: There are two powertrain options, the base model has a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder with a 9-speed automatic transmission, 255 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The AMG 43 gets a biturbo V6 with 385 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque.
Volvo XC60
With three powertrain options including a plug-in hybrid, all 4-cylinder powertrains and are matted to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The B5 with 247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, B6 with a supercharger gets 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque and the 455 horsepower T8 plug-in hybrid with 58 km/36 miles of EV range

Have a 2023 NX 350h average 40 mpg and Lexus #1 in dependability 22 out of the last 27 years from J D Power. Lexus least expensive to maintain among luxury vehicles. Fun to drive, quiet and the 14 inch touchscreen is great. IMO best looking SUV.

I really enjoy your video's, you and Zack do a great job. You know your stuff and have great perspectives. I respect your opinions. As for the cars I have not driven them but I did drive the Lincoln Corsair PHEV and it was fabulous. 30ish miles on all electric and a sweet 2.5 hybrid gets mid 30's mpg. Even has a spare tire and with the new IRS tables (making it a SUV ie $80K cap) it could qualify for the rebate in the US. Certainly worth a look. I know Zack loves the Lincoln poshness too. Keep up the good work - I will keep watching.

I have driven all of them. The X3 was the best as far as tech and driving dynamics, but the thigh bolsters make my legs fall asleep while driving. The GV70 is amazing, but they are hard to come by. The NX could’ve used a bit more space inside, but otherwise I think it has the best reliability, decent tech, and OK seats (if you get the luxury with 4-way lumbar)

Owned a NX 450h+ since last May, and love how 90% of the time it drives like a near silent EV. It's great to drive past crowded EV chargers when on summer road trips, yet not care a bit about rising prices at the pump. Been to the gas station 3 times over 8 months. The digital rear view mirror means I can load luggage up to the top if needed without blocking real view, which makes the trunk size just fine for a family of 4.. I had an RDX previously & the only advantage of SHAWD is under throttle at turn exit. During turn in under breaking and mid corner, there is no advantage for SHAWD over the NX. I don't miss the engine noise & fuel consumption of RDX.

I have the NX too and I love how I can consistently get MPG ratings above the advertised 39/41! The lane keeping feature when adaptive cruise control is on is also so much better than any other car I have tried. I rented a Subaru one time and the adaptive cruise control was basically playing pinball in the lane with me and it was sickening

As an owner of the GV70 you get used to the 2 dial system quickly. It works fantastic. No fingerprints on my screen. For the money a few things are missing from the top model. Had an X3 rental a few weeks back, first BMW I’ve ever driven. Other than the cheap interior that pails in comparison to my 20k Mazda3, it was a great vehicle. Stellar powertrain, great ride quality and interior space. Loved the way it drove, but that interior needs some love.

Great summary! I looked at all these looking for the best luxury ride, quiet cabin, luxury feel and best tech. That was the GV70 2.5T Prestige for me. Best power for the price, amazing interior, best tech in my opinion...that screen is amazing! The 19" wheels give it a much superior ride to the 3.5T model with 21" wheels...and beats all the others on this list...again, in my opinion. Wonderful review. It is the segment that I am likely to get into for my next car. Everyone wants everything but doesn't want to pay anything. I don't have grown up kids to worry so I am leaning towards the Lexus, struggled between the hybrid and the PHEV, assuming the dealers have stocks to sell. I haven't driven it but from what I saw at the dealers it is a well-made vehicle, refined and looks (and should feel) a bit sporty. Great on gas too. Also, I wonder if you have taken reliability into your grading as it is important to ordinary households as well.

Having driven quite a few of these I have to say the X3 M40i is the most rewarding driving experience. If you love hearing the roar of the engine, love feeling feedback through the steering wheel, and in general love an active driving experience there is no other car that comes close. Even the ZF transmission seems to telepathically sense when you want to shift. It's a rip-roarin' fun time when you put it into Sport+ and a very sedate daily driver when you put it back into comfort mode. As an added bonus when you put it into EcoPro you could even teach your kids how to drive in it.

All of them are great choices. As a previous Audi owner, I would still take the Q5 given its overall balance and its user-friendly design typical of the brand. X3 is another great choice. In fact, X3 is such a great car. My friend just traded his 1.5 year old Model 3, who already tired of Tesla's notorious poor build quality/reliability and EV charging annoyance, for the 2.0T version. Of course, if I can afford the down payment and monthly lease payment. Macan GTS is the one to beat.

The thing about the Acura RDX is that when it came out, it really could have been considered a midsize SUV. With price and options, it really beat out many midsize crossovers. But the thing I have always hated is that "cloaked-alien" look of the center console, which you have to ruffle the bottom of the "cloak" in order to even do anything with it. Otherwise, all around, I would say it is the best value of all compact to mid-sized 2 row SUVs!

The RDX changed significantly in 2019 with that horrendous infotainment centre that looks like they stuck an iPad on the dash (almost all other vehicles did the same thing - what an aesthetic mistake) and the 4 cylinder turbocharged engine. I had an older MDX and wanted to downsize to the RDX. I was aware that 2019 would bring a change so I patiently waited for it to become available. Test drove all of these vehicles...for me, the Genesis GV0 was shocking at how great it drove and agree with your assessment...was a perfect goldilocks value proposition.. Exterior and interior design, ride, fit and finish, technology, warranty and price (vs Germans). Hoping to upgrade to this Genny in a couple of years...but man, these aren't depreciating as much as I was hoping..

Great video as always. Voted with my chequebook, and against Zack's advice ordered a GV70 Sport Plus which is somewhere in the purgatory between order and production. I'm sure the 2.5 is perfectly adequate but would be a downgrade from the 3.3 in my G70. Your video of the Papaya Macan had me seriously leaning to Porsche but in the end I couldn't rationalize the price jump to a Macan S.

Hope you have better luck with that T8 than we did. Have owned 3 Volvos since 2018. The T8 stranded us twice, both times 60-80 miles from nearest dealership. That mean a long flat bed tow, and huge inconvenience. The Inverter for hybrid system was replaced the first time, the second was the entire E transmission - a known trouble area with these it seems - found out after we bought. The shop took 4-5 weeks each time for a fix, no technicians trained to work on the Hybrids. As soon as it emerged from the shop on 2nd visit in 3 months, it was traded on a Lexus RX350. We loved the road trips when it was running well, having over 40K miles in 4 years. But when you cannot trust it, you change. Good luck...

Nice! I'm partial towards the German brands...but test drove the Genesis GV70 and was blown away. The base 4cyl at 300hp is impressive...and has that goldilocks ride (not as firm as BMW and not overly soft like Mercedes). Deciding between BMW X3 and the Genny and leaning towards the GV70... the Exterior/Interior and warranty and unbeatable in this class imo

Mini Cooper JCW Countryman gets my vote. It offers a lot of paint colors, has sporty hood stripes, handles like a go_kart and has a wicked exhaust note. Also, the interior leather is top notch with diamond quilted seats with contrast white piping. The Union Jack tail lights are also very cool and it's very reliable and well made.

Well, I went for the Stelvio Veloce almost two years ago with an upper trim (adaptive suspension, slip diff, full real leather interior, level 2 autonomous driving, etc.) They're about to start selling the Stelvio with a small facelift (digital dash and new LED headlights that look great, but I still have to decide which headlights design I prefer). If I were to pick one now, I would definitely look into the new Maserati Grecale (same platform as the Stelvio - but even bigger), but its price tag would probably bring me back again to the Stelvio. Still makes me smile every single day I drive it. What a pleasant, fun car to drive!

How do you find the interior space in general and rear legroom?
@miks564
@miks564 Жыл бұрын
@@lincolnm267 I’m 190cm tall (over 6.2”) and I fit ok behind my own seat position. Behind myself It’s not roomy, but it’s perfectly ok even for traveling. The rear seat has a higher seating position. On one hand, makes the roof closer to our head, on the other helps with a more comfortable angle for the legs. I’ve already made some longer trips, two of them over 1000Km 620+ miles) and the car is very comfortable for trips. The autonomous driving also helped making them feel easy. A fifth passenger in the center rear seat might not be suitable for long trips. Never tried it though. Because of its exterior kind of sporty lines, the Stelvio seems smaller than it’s competitors, but it isn’t. It’s even slightly wider than most.
@miks564
@miks564 Жыл бұрын
@@lincolnm267 …but I must add - if that’s important to you, that the interior doesn’t offer many options for storage. …the trunk or boot is perfectly ok with 525Lts capacity which is 4% less than a Q5 or a GLC, but the same as a X3i, X4, GLC Coupe, or 5% more than a Macan or a Volvo XC60.

Nice. I loved to hear about price comparison for the modes available in both Canada and US. I’m looking for a family car with two kids we have. And at the moment I’m thinking about Kia Sportage, as it has big trunk and good equipped for 40K CAD. Do you think that it’s something better I can consider for the family car? I can look into a bigger Kia Sorento with 6 seats, but I think that it has less options for the sim kilts price compared to Sportage. My wife likes Lexus. But if it’s not comfortable for Kim’s on the back seat, maybe it’s not worth to consider. Will be happy if you have a better ideas for us. Thanks

Presentation is often just as important as substance, and you both are pros in this manner. A former Vancouverite now hangin out in Phoenix I just traded in my 2011 Infiniti G37 hard top convertible which was too much fun and upgraded to a 2019 Porsche Cayenne base model with many upgraded options and only 37kmi. I also drive a 2018 Toyota Highlander which is an excellent comfort ride, but the Cayenne is a quality performance ride. Until you drive a Cayenne you don't really understand the build quality, ride performance and overall experience of this car. All of these cars would be good choices, but I just needed to test the Porsche waters so hopefully will not be disappointed in the long term.

Thanks for yet another informative and fun video! One big question - why no electric cars? Did you deliberately only choose ICE vehicles or don't you believe any would make the grade? FYI I just test drove a new Tesla Model Y and it has definitely improved in recent months. The build quality is much better (at last) and the suspension has been revised and is now better. With it's inherent efficiency and new lower price I believe it is now very competitive. What do you guys think?

There is a sleeper that could/should displace at least the NX. I know, I know it isn't in the "compact" class but isn't it? I am talking about the BMW X1. Zack and Andrea, I love your reviews and watch them all...but if you consider that the U11 X1 is as big as the first X3 then it deserves a place. It has MORE room than the NX abd it's interior and exterior blows the NX350 out of the water. At $65K LOADED it has more room than the NX and just about as much as all others in your list. AWD standard, 241 HP and 295 lb ft is a sweet spot and it tops the Lexus hybrid due to the CD and DCT. I am 6-3 and the interior room is unbelievable. The interior is sleek and modern and OMG the seats are so comfortable!!! Took me 10 minutes to get used to lack of iDrive controller so it is way better than touch pads in Acura. You asked to give you feedback, so there you have it. The "sleeper" is great for empty nesters and small families. All the bells and whistles for 65K CDN, yeah it is a "sub-compact" but really isn't. All the best to you both, welcome your response...
