@@Struudeli Not all auctions are those with Killers bidding. There are some smaller auction houses that are local sellers who’ve taken care of them. Not always. I’m not a fan of auction either because there are oftentimes many heartbreaking horses there, however, being a person who DOES prefer to rescue animals I would ABSOLUTELY go to an auction and purchase a horse that suits my needs simply to REMOVE them from a terrible situation. Shea and Kyle have possibly SAVED the majority of their horses from an unfortunate future - if not from a kill buyer, then from an inexperienced horse owner who doesn’t provide them the life that she and Kyle have provided them.

@@lizzieb6311 I am aware of this but it's very rare for them to be good. Also it's the same as saving a dog from a puppy mill by buying it. Yeah you will save the life of that one puppy, but in the end you will just feed the system and make it continue longer. It's unfortunate but a fact. I am not saying she's doing anything wrong as I don't think it's so black and white. These horses are incredibly lucky to end up with Shae and she's an incredible owner. I think she's a good person helping these animals with a great experienced touch and gentleness that is sadly unknown to so many horses. But I also understand why someone would think that it's wrong to feed this system and in some ways it is. But as said, it's incredibly complicated and not as black and white as some people think.

I can't believe people are criticizing what horses you are buying. You know far more about what your vision is than any of us I'm so glad you are sharing your journey with us; however, it is your journey and you know what time and money you and Kyle can invest. That complete barn makeover can't be cheap and each and every horse is a huge investment. The purchase price is just the beginning. You have feed, vet services, farrier services every six weeks to two months, all kinds of tack to fit individual horses and particular riding styles. The list goes on and on. You have a completely different take on how you approach horses than other video channels. Many others are training or untraining difficult horses and they don't have the personal relationship with them that you do. I appreciate what you do and I look forward to what magic you will work with Ariel.

I love how you are building trust with Ariel. He's a tip about the round pen for a mustang: place the round pen inside another larger arena or paddock. When you think that they are ready to be led outside the smaller round pen, it is super helpful to be able to walk out of the round pen into a larger area that is still fenced. Some of them will lead perfectly inside the round pen but then the first steps outside of it, you might lose them for a minute. It doesn't always happen, but, having that outer fence for "just in case" they see the bigger space and try to run off, is invaluable! And, it greatly increases the safety level on those first walks out of the round pen. If the horse gets loose from you, you can just say oh well and try again, and not worry about them running into the road or other danger.

Like you, I spent endless hours sitting in his stall without approaching him: just talking, singing, reading to him. It took a few days but eventually he came to me. It was his own decision at that point. We had forged an unbreakable bond. There was so much trust between us. You mentioned what she has gone through. I know her mom is going through a lot, also. The pain of having your foal forcefully taken from you, your udder is full and no baby to suckle and relieve the pain. It is so sad that all livestock go through that and have no say about their future. I’m happy she had a safe landing with an empathetic and knowledgeable family like you and Kyle. Enjoy your journey together! 🎠
@oldageisdumb
@oldageisdumb 10 ай бұрын
Yes, she’s young to be weaned. However, if done at the proper time it’s not really forcefully. The foals are eating much more foliage (even at this age) so they aren’t nursing as much. The udder doesn’t produce near as much milk. When the foals are removed, the moms usually could care less by then. It’s the same way with dogs. I run a non profit rescue and by the time babies are old enough to wean the moms are usually so over their babies they just walk away and don’t look back. With dogs you almost have to force the moms to nurse after 5-6 weeks (usually, not always, but usually). I know we have romantic visions of moms and babies in nature so bonded but they don’t really love each other, not like humans. They just have a natural instinct to care and be protective. Once that goes away as the babies age, they honestly don’t care. I used to work for a horse breeding farm and the babies will fuss for about 24 hours and then forget all about it. The moms forget in about 5 minutes. Yes, this one is young (and I don’t agree with it) but only by a month or two.
@kimmiranda7955
@kimmiranda7955 10 ай бұрын
I strongly disagree with you. I bred Hanoverians and let the mare decide when it was time for her foal to be weaned. Some mares let their foals nurse until they were close to being yearlings. Mustangs in the wild do the same with their foals. It is more natural, and less stress for both mare and foal. I have seen the size of the mares udder at four months and it is stretched to the max and full of milk. Directions to relieve the pain of the mare is to hose the udder with cold water to supposedly help her be more comfortable. Maybe you didn’t have time to truly observe the mares. Not many mares are tired of their foals at 4 months. I stated, livestock, not dogs or cats. I would agree dogs and cats are through with the nursing process much earlier than livestock. I have seen full grown cows in a field nursing on another full grown cow. How would you explain that?
@oldageisdumb
@oldageisdumb 10 ай бұрын
@@kimmiranda7955 I guess you missed the part where I said 4 months is too young and my comments were regarding the proper time of weaning? We bred Hanoverians as well and we never weaned at 4 months. More like 7 months which is close to wild mustangs (wild mustangs naturally wean at 8-9 months not at a year as you stated. Google). My comments were in reference to the way you said things, which sounded very much like you have a romantic notion that mom and baby love each other, or have other unrealistic feelings. And yes, I did watch mares very carefully and they couldn’t care less when they were separated. My comment about it being too young but only by a month or two was based on industry average. And bringing up dogs was to say that I’ve watched many types of animals through the birthing process and it’s all the same when time to separate at proper weaning time. I do see where my comment was confusing about the 8 weeks- I wasn’t comparing the weaning date, I was comparing the process when the animals were ready to be weaned (which is obviously much sooner at 8 weeks than horses) that moms/babies, when ready, really aren’t horribly upset to be removed from their mothers. Like I said, your original comment made it sound like you had very little experience with weaning and that moms/babies was this loving relationship when it is not. That’s what I was explaining. There are a lot of young people on this particular page and I honestly thought you were one with the way you stated your original comment, and you don’t sound that way in your second comment so I apologize for that.
@kimmiranda7955
@kimmiranda7955 10 ай бұрын
@@oldageisdumbI hate that I am responding to your comment, but I am dumbfounded at your perception of my comment being “romantic”. It takes me back to a psychology professor’s lecture. She said that only 5% of what a person says is understood as the speaker intended. You guessed wrong, that I didn’t see that you agreed that 4 months is too young to wean a foal. I did. You misunderstood what I wrote about mustangs weaning their foals “close to being yearlings”. Gestation is approximately 11 months. Of course, the mare will wean her current foal prior to the second foal’s birth. I don’t need to google that. Before reading your reply, I saw a video of a dairy cow following a cart that had her live calf in it being taken away, forcefully. Nothing romantic about that. My comment, agreeing with Shae that her new foal had been through a lot by being weened so young and not having any say in what humans decide to do with livestock, seems to have gotten under your skin but I don’t understand your explanation as to why. (My comment sounded as though I was young and it was too romantic for your taste, and you felt compelled to enlighten me) I do accept your apology. Sometimes it isn’t worth commenting on posts that are intended to be well wishes for the owner of the you tube channel. Best wishes.

@@kimmiranda7955 If you did see that I stated 4 months was too young than you clearly responded incorrectly. With your cow/cart reference I do believe you have a romantic notion on how animals see their babies. It is not love, that is a human emotion. It is instinct that clearly fades as the babies age. Yes, this particular baby was weaned too young in my opinion and nothing good can come from it, especially learning social cues and dietary needs. But some farms wean at 4 months every time with success so it can’t be too traumatizing. I just wouldn’t do it personally.

Edit: Please read disclaimer at The bottom of this comment.... The horses that make you work for their trust are also the ones who would move heaven and earth for their person. I had one like her. Nothing more rewarding being cuddled in the paddock by a horse that Wanted to be near you when the barn said even though he has lovely ground manners he was super wary of others. (He grew comfortable with the barn owner and wouldnt really be weird with her as much but when I bought him he was just shut down and while he had never been standoffish and rude he would definitely maintain a distance from anyone who came into the pasture that wasn't me or her.) They find their person and find comfort in them. I love them. She will provide you the most rewarding love and it will be absolutely wonderful to be able to follow this journey with you, Kyle, and this little sweet girl ❤️ she's gorgeous! ❤️❤️ Disclaimer (since this is quickly getting likes and I want to advise this point) : I am an adult and I really really really advise children to not get horses that may cause bodily harm. As an adult I could take that risk. As an adult Shay can take that risk. Life isn't Spirit, Flicka, or Black Beauty. It takes hard work, and time. There were many days I felt overwhelmed, and there were many times I left the barn with a bruise or injury I had caused by not paying attention when I had first got him. Not from him being mean, but just nervous. Foals and adult horses both who are untouched need you to be at peace with anything that may happen.... They get nervous and can step on you or as Shay said there were times this baby got worried and turned like she may nip.... Consult your trainer, and only take on what you need to. ❤️❤️

@@kiayawh I don't train horses, but I have spent years training dogs. SO many rescue dogs go through this same need to develop trust first before any real training happens. Many people who adopt these rescue dogs forget that fact and shower them with over affection and get into their space, which also can be very dangerous for a dog that has not gained any trust. Understanding you are working with an animal that has only two ways to deal with you...flight (run) or fight (push back) which can be very dangerous in an enclosed area so patience is essential. Even a little dog can bite! Fear aggression is one of the worst "habits" to break on any animal (horse or dog) so not starting off with getting an animal defensive but giving it time to sort out the situation on their own is one of the best ways to improve confidence and earn trust. After trust, training can start...but starting training without trust is like building a house on a shaky foundation. I think that was what you and Shae were both trying to emphasize.

Great name.I cried seeing how gentle you are with her,hearing you talk about how horses have no control over their destiny.This is something I have thought about a lot,growing up and living in rural Australia.Our farm animals in particular are enslaved, and I have fought for everything from pigs left in trailers in the sun to cows crying for their suddenly removed calves.We have a huge responsibilty to any animal in our care, so glad Ariel is with you.She is safe.

As I watched again the great trust and bond you are creating with Ariel I started thinking how very much this filly truly needed you. The same way Belle desperately needed you. You seem to have the ability to tune into that. This filly would have had a really hard time in the wrong hands or in inexperienced hands. Thank goodness the bidding stopped with you. That was incredible even for us just watching at home!! Your expression on your face when you got her said it all!

She is a stunning little foal with huge doe like eyes full of innocent curiosity. It is a real shame that the Canadian ranch couldn't wait another two months, as four months is far to young to be weaned but they want their ROI as soon as. I love that she kept going to check on the old hay and muck in the wheelbarrow as you cleaned the stall. She really is a curious one and, even if initially skittish, seems bold enough to approach and initiate interactions based on her curiosity. You didn't see a horse with a perfect temperament; you saw one with potential and went for it, and that's wonderful. It's also so funny that she started to learn 'touch' or targeting with your shoes.

You doing really good with her! No pressure, just letting her get to know you on her terms of curiosity. She's naturally is lonely. Having you there as much as possible. She will look forward to your company! She did so good while you cleaned her stall. She didn't freak or get nervous with you used the pooper scooper. She was really wanting to go explore. She has learn that's the way out! 😆 Positive reinforcement goes along way! She started chewing when you said good morning! 👍 sitting with her & talking to her is just like. her mom talking to her. She recognizes you by smell, sound & touch, sight on each side. Welcome to Ariel! It's amazing how she's already making huge steps in just a few hours. Good job, Shae: keep doing what you and don't listen to the trolls, you had already shared your thought process very eloquently in the previous auction, as far as factoring in the air of time and energy you have to put into training vs. what you pay. And you don't have to justify yourself: there will always be people that will try to bring you down, criticize you, judge you and shame you because they are unhappy people and think they can do better. Don't listen to those voices and stay grounded and focused on what you do because you're GREAT at it! Sending positive vibes to you and Ariel! 💖💖

Congratulations on your new weanling! I felt so sorry for all of those babies - being taken from their mothers and their home - everything that was familiar to them, and shipped 21 hours across the country and the border. But this little filly is so lucky to have found a good home with you! I enjoyed watching the process as you calmly introduced her to being around people, being touched, and just generally getting used to her new surroundings. Girl, we got your back! You are not a rescue and there is nothing wrong with that. There are many paths in the equine field and and yours is your path. The horses you bring into your program, you bring in thoughtfully and that is what will hopefully keep them from ever ending up needing to be rescued. You base your decisions with both you head and your heart, that thoughtfulness should be honored and not judged. I think you made the right call with Ariel. I think your method and type of horsemanship will help her to thrive, having one hell of a life vs. being pushed into scary situations and shutting down, eventual standing the chance of being a hard to handle or explosives horse. Where she could end up in a bad situation as she gets older, you and Kyle are the humans she needs. I commend you for being brave and a positive influence on all of the horses that come into your life. From one horse trainer to another.

This sweet girl has a very good head on her shoulders. For everything she just went through. She is curious, doesn’t panic. And honestly, her being in the barn is a very good solution. You would need a small holding pen outside to work with her there. And of course far away from the other horses for quarantine. As you put so much time and effort in - it’s easier that way. Thank you for explaining more about why you chose her. And it’s for me easy to understand. And maybe really in the future there is a Mustang! 😊 There are so many of them really needing help. And the name of this beautiful girl - absolutely perfect! It couldn’t be a better fit. And her head is do beautiful! She is also going to be a looker for sure.
