We've another video coming soon of a little road trip from Rye, taking in some of the other beautiful little towns and villages en route - and joining some of the local NT locations too. 🙏 Thank you Penny, that's very kind 😍 Rye is a wonderful place - if you would like a little bit more then checkout Winchelsea which is a few miles away - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e6mRjZuDq5uleXU.html . There's a lot more content on the channel because we love a bit of history; fascinating places like Sandwich, Rochester, a few castles and National Trust properties. And next week... Well, that would be telling. Thanks again, Janis & Gary

Hi Luciano, we love a wander, and my feet are feeling it in Bath 🤭 but Rye is fabulous, any they do a good job of preserving its feel. There’s more to the town, and maybe we’ll cover that in another video, who knows? As always, thanks so much for the comment, we really appreciate it. Take care, Gary& Janis

Emma, Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it. We've filmed another video which I've yet to complete - a bit of a spoiler - A little road trip heading out of Rye to Rye Harbour, along to Winchelsea & Winchelsea Beach, before heading up to Bodium, part to will be Roberts bridge, Bateman's, Burwash, Hawkhurst (completes the story of the Hawkhurst Gang), before heading back to Rye. We've another one planned, possibly next spring for a similar hasting loop, with maybe a little overlap. Do you have any tips for villages or places we must see? Thanks again for stopping by, and taking the time to comment. All the best, Gary & Janis

Linda, I'm not sure you would - despite what you see in the end product, it's all a bit hectic. Janis films, I take the photos for our site - OurWorldforYou.Com, and we follow our notes (we do try to do a little research before we arrive), and also explore. Normally, as we're out and about, we may then head on somewhere else after, as we did in this case - another video in the pipeline - all very exhausting. Still, we do enjoy it, else why do it? Sadly Rye is typical of most Historic English Market towns , "all fur coat and no knickers". No doubt it's a great place for a day trip but it's not a great place to live unless you're a wealty middle class ex London type looking for that "Quaint second home in the country". There is little to no genuine community spirit left , zero housing for people who earn even a modest wage because the great and the good who could afford to retire of move there and have the spare time to get on the local government bodies will fight tooth and nail against any development which would benefit those on low to average wages. Housing is unaffordable for local people and many of those shops in the film are just fronts for websites. You can't buy anything from them , they are in akin to film sets. Take a walk down Watchbell street on a cold January evening and there's barely a light on and it's not due to any power cuts ,it's because many are second homes. I've lived in and around Rye for 55+yrs and Rye in 2024 is just a facade.
@OurWorldForYou
@OurWorldForYou Ай бұрын
Hi Adrian, Firstly, thanks for taking the time to stop by and leave a comment - The "all fur coat and no knickers" made me smile on a Sunday morning. It's a shame, but I know you're right, the flip side is where I live in a village of 750 homes, surrounded on all sides by green space, has approval for 950 new homes, with possibly a few more hundred later along the line (I don't suspect too much will be affordable though!) Maybe the new government's approach of overruling NIMBYs may help, but developers rarely build homes for the modest/affordable - less profit. I really like Rye in the winter; a lot fewer tourists, and next time I'm back, I'll take a look at the shops - from the outside, it is a breath of fresh air that doesn't look like every high street, but is it all a facade? Let's hope we see change in 2024 and beyond, and that the locals, the real locals, are represented. All the best, Gary & Janis
@AdrianSams
@AdrianSams Ай бұрын
@@OurWorldForYou Hi Gary & Janis, I'm glad I made you smile. It's good to smile and takes less effort than frowning apparently. I totally agree with you regarding genuineky "affordable housing" doesn't make enough profit for the developers apparently. So many agree to include affordable/Social housing but conveniently are allowed to not include them when they actually begin building which is totally wrong. Bung the council a few £'s and they are allowed to remove them. If we go back to the 1980's there was plenty of self build's being built but even that is now for the wealthy only. Regarding the shops, I guess like most High Streets in the UK we have an over supply of coffee shops and Charity shops. Many of the Hotels are owned by very few people which is never a good idea because it stifles competition. There are still some good pubs and the Water Works on the Corner of Rope Walk and Tower street is very popular. It used to be the old Public toliets and even a soup kitchen back in the 1800's. There is no doubt that Rye has some great history but it really isn't a thriving town full of life. The biggest issue is countrywide which is the total loss of Community spirit. I remember Bonfire Night was a huge event and in the 1960's had a Fire breathing dragon, imagine that moving along Rye High Street with all the timber framed houses. Carnival day was a massive community event with long processions of fancy dress,bands, floats etc and the vast majority of the community took part. We like many towns and villages had May Day celebrations, Pudding races, "Hot Pennies" where the Towen Mayor would throw out hot pennies from the Town hall for kids to pick up and compete for. Today there is little left. My personal view is the Politicians don't actually like our culture,history and traditions. Look no further than today where England will be playing Spain in the final and barely a St Georges flag to be seen anywhere apart from the pubs. I'm gald you like Rye and hope you do come back.. All the best and thanks again for replying. 🙂

Hi Adrian, I always try to reply, although there may be a few days of radio silence as we head off to Normandy next week. It's strange, our little village does have a touch of community spirit, but the expansion will damage that, I guess we need to 'make hay while the sun shines.' Maybe we can hope, with the right community champions, we have a brighter future. All the best, Gary & Janis

@@OurWorldForYou Hi gary & Janis, Totally agree with you and life is a wheel so what goes around comes around. Sounds a bit cheesy but life does seem to be like that so hopefully we can re-generate our community spirit one day and start again with many of our celebrations etc. Have a great time in Normandy. Years ago I took my son on a World war I battlefield tour and we absolutely loved France and Belgium. Travel enhances the mind and leaves fabulous memories which last a lifetime. All the best and safe trip Adrian.

Hi Adrian, We had a great time thanks, and visited the British Normandy Memorial overlooking 'Gold' beach - wonderful, but the weather could have been better, it picked up later in the week when we headed to Dives0sur-Mer (the place William the Conqueror left France for at the start of the the Normandy invasion of 1066). We've done a lot of the WWI trail, and most of it is covered on our blog. If everything goes to plan, I aim to release a video of the British Normandy Memorial this weekend.
