What a smart young person you are! It takes resourcefulness, intelligence, and problem solving skills to accomplish what you have done. You should be very proud of yourself. (Autism does not equal lack of intelligence. In fact, most Autistic people are highly intelligent, more so than their peers, and can see things that are going on which others fail to notice...be it who's in the room, anything dealing with numbers, changes in anything sensory.) You're awesome!

My 20-month old daughter has just been diagnosed with autism. I started noticing her “symptoms” (hate that word cause it suggests that autism is inherently pathological, which it is not, but I digress), after watching one of the videos focusing on Liam. I was terrified! I had wished I never watched that video. THANK GOD for your videos. They literally save lives through awareness, something there’s a shortage of re autism. Thank you for this video. Someone out there is that much closer to getting the attention and assistance they so badly need! ❤️❤️👏🏾

Last year I had a student who appeared autistic to me (based off of experience, not formal education/knowledge of autism). He struggled greatly when the school year started and he screamed and cried all day long for the first two months of school. He also flapped his arms whenever he was happy. We struggled greatly with getting his attention and him recognizing that we were talking to him.

My daughter is the same exact way! No filter whatsoever and says whatever she’s thinking... I’ve had to apologize and explain over and over for her asking people for example if their pregnant when they aren’t or asking people are you a boy or girl if they have shorter hair. She even told her teacher you look like a boy because she had a suit on. Most people are understanding though and laugh it off. She’s so innocent when she’s asking it’s hard to get offended but we try to explain it to her.

Thank you so much! You are an answer to prayer! My daughter has ASD and was diagnosed late at the age of 9. She will be 13 this year and has come a long way. Your video really nailed it in terms of what we witness in the day to day life. It's so nice not to feel alone and bring perspective to ASD in this age group specifically.

Stephanie, the advice you gave at the end is wonderful. l was not evaluated until late adulthood, and had to go back to my parents and say, "Remember when you used to have to always tell me you weren't being literal..." or "Remember when l wouldn't look at anybody while they were talking to me because l was so shy..." or "Remember when l refused to speak unless you called me [insert name-not-my-own]..." etc, etc. l'm an Aspie and did well at school academically, but socially l was a nightmare. Any woman who suspects that she, or her daughter, might have Aspergers, l would strongly suggest looking for a checklist of female traits - they are quite different from male traits and are more often missed by professionals. Thanks again for all you do!

If you want to understand what it’s like to be an undiagnosed neurodivergent, this is what it feels like. Trying to act and take on the responsibility of someone your age feels like a child trying to walk down the stairs in their fathers shoes. At first you’ve got a lot of courage to do it and so you walk down the first step, but then on the second step your foot slips out of the shoe a little and you make a mistake or say something weird amongst kids your age, but you didn’t fall so you keep going. Down one stair... and another... and another. And eventually your one stair from the landing! With only a few mistakes here and there. So you go down the next step, but your foot doesn’t make it all the way down... and you trip and fall on your face. And you blame yourself, because you’re the one who didn’t understand what seemed so simple to everyone else, and maybe if you had just worked a little harder you wouldn’t have fallen. Your were supposed to be as good as every other kid... at least that’s what you thought. So you stand on the landing upset, frustrated, angry, and overall just disappointed in yourself. Your afraid to walk down the next set of stairs, afraid that you’ll mess up again, afraid that maybe this time... someone will see. And maybe they’ll make fun of you, or call you stupid or gullible because you didn’t understand a joke or sarcasm. But you push through anyway because, after all, that’s what everyone else does... right?

Your comment makes me cry and so sad for kids who go undiagnosed or went undiagnosed. (I currently have a 12 year old girl undiagnosed that I believe 100% should be diagnosed). This is something that keeps me up at night knowing that without a diagnosis she doesn’t get the services covered that she could be getting to possibly help her if she was diagnosed. 🥺🥺😢😔

Thank you for this. Trying to make a laundry list of my child. Out of frustration I took a break. I started browsing youtube and saw that Fathering Autism had just uploaded. Watch that and loved it like always. This video was a recommended one. Eureka!! You just explained my 7 year old daughter. I've been fighting for 3 years to have her appropriately diagnosed and accommodated. Homeschooling her has proved to be the best option for the present time, as the school district we live in has missed the obvious catalysts for her in school behaviors. I'm unemployed and saving for a psychological evaluation. Thank you for your listed and to the point breakdown of the many degrees of Autism and the possible comorbidities that can come along with it. Thank you!

My partner of 12 years was finally just diagnosed with moderate autism last week. Doctors in the past have told her that she couldn't have autism because she made eye contact, even though its painful for her to do and she only does it briefly so she can "seem normal".

I'm so glad you made this video. Because a lot of the things you mentioned in your preteen even fits my toddler. Which I think is so great you're showing the 3 different children you have, so when we see videos of a child more close to the severe side and one more close to the high functioning, and one in the middle, it really helps so much. I really feel like my son is fitting in with Noah then Lex like I thought before. My son has an autism evaluation this wednesday and we are worried he will be misdiagnosed or not diagnosed due to not being severe. They said he just barely made it past the pre-evaluation because he passed the MCHAT.

I consider myself a pretty typical person but I've always had a horrible time with eye contact. I've noticed it's gotten kinda bad recently. I'm 18 and I can barely look people in the eyes. I always look at peoples mouths, that helps me seem more normal lol. Whenever I talk to people I never look at them directly which I am aware of and I feel bad but I simply cannot maintain eye contact. It doesn't effect my life too much, I work full time as a cashier and I'm going to college to become a vet tech. I'm really hoping the eye contact won't affect my future veterinary career.

Autism in a teen tends to change as the chemicals in their bodies/brains change. I noticed a BIG change at 13, 16, and 18. We are going into our 19th year and I'm starting to see new changes. Autism is unpredictable at any age. They can "change" over night.

im 14 and i have resently had raised suspicion of me potentially having asd my friends and i have seen some potential signs i dont have a diagnosis but reasons i think i might is becasue i struggle with going into large venues which makes me very dizzy and lights are quite painful, when im given tasks i struggle with it i can only do it in my own pace and one by one and with my emotions i find it hard to deal with commands and discipline like for example all my life i get told of and i feel like i cant cope with it very well which might seem like im just a brat but i dont know what to do, and i always have mood swings and randomly i can get really happy or really sad and i cant sleep on comand. reasons my friends think i have asd is cause whenever i go anywhere ill randomly pick up things and not want to let go and have an attachment and i was just wanting maybe someone who is or has relatives friends with asd to give me there view on it because i have gcses and a lot of pressure from school and family and i think if i get someone opinion maybe i can speak to a GP and get support in school to help. Yep. Im on the spectrum and i get criticised all the time for speaking too loud. Ive also had "friends" claim that because i can make eye contact i cant have ASD. I cant identify my emotions. But whatever i feel, I feel it at a maximum level. I have OCD and ADHD too. And like Noah, I dont like showering and teeth brushing. If my clothes have a scratchy label or my socks arent smooth inside my shoes etc that feeling is so overwelming that it is like i am in pain. I cant think or breathe or function until i sort that irritation out. I get overwelmed if i have multiple tasks to do and have just swapped from making long lists of tasks that i need to complete and then panicking about where to start. Onto writing down just 3 things and making the list as First, Next and Then. Im using that system for lots of areas of my life and finding it very helpful.

Thanks for doing this. It is really important to talk about older people with autism. In the discussion of autism, it's all about toddlers and kindergarteners. Most services are for children this age, and it is even referred to as a "childhood disorder." People act like we disappear the moment we hit puberty. When I was being diagnosed, most places turned me away because of my age(I was 16 at the time, not even an adult). Yes, early intervention is important, but its not as if us older kids and adults are a lost cause.

Your videos are so useful and helpful!!! And for everyone with red flags, if the pediatrician says what you see in your child it "normal" but you really feel it is not, (I'm not sure how it works in each place) but in Puerto Rico I was able to get my daughter evaluated without the referral from the pediatrician ( I paid for it) since he said everything she did was normal and she was just "hiding" from things that scare her. So pediatrician are not always seeing things either. But by watching these videos I knew it couldn't be normal so follow your momma intuition! At the end it wasn't normal she was diagnosed with sensory association disorder.

My daughter wasn’t diagnosed til she was 17. We knew she had it but it took a school counsellor at a new school to broach the subject with us even though we had been asking for years. We then had to get the diagnosis privately. She’s now 28 and also been diagnosed with ADHD as well. She has fabric and loud noise sensory issues. She made good eye contact but did a load of mimicking. She stimmed by shredding paper tissues which she would do all the time - created a huge mess 😆 She also talks super loud too. She never mixed well with her peers from starting school and at high school really wanted friends but because she was different was picked on and didn’t have any. Love your videos 💕

Great video,I'm black age 37 and my wife age 26,alot of those symptoms I had even as a child but I had my first mental break episode at age 27 and from 27 to 31 I was diagnosed with bipolar 1,PTSD, borderline personality disorder and have been on disability since age 27 because of those and when I was 19 I was diagnosed with slight ocd,and depression, then come find out at age 32 I was diagnosed with high functioning autism aka aspburgers, and once I knew all of that then things started making sense,as far as me growing up being isolated and picked on as a child teen and even an adult back when I worked, also I have huuuuugggge empathy, and since age 27 and a vehiphobic..aka driving is overwhelming, and just the thought sends me into tears and a panic attack.Thank God my wife loves to drive. I am a polymath aka have tons of hobbies and I'll get into one and be obsessed, and my wife who suffered from depression she took a full evaluation and she got diagnosed with major depressive disorder, social anxiety, and aspburgers but she just tested right on the cusp of autism spectrum.shes like way quiet and me I talk.at. people and I don't make eye contact hardly ever.but she can converse but when she talks she looks away. Her testing doc found a place that works with adults anywhere on the spectrum cause she needs coping skills and I do too.we have both been admitted to the psych ward,me like 5 times and I take 18 pills a day, some for type 2 diabetes, some for mental and prozasin and melatonin for sleep. My wife has hers as well and I pray this autism place that helps adults can teach us coping things cause we both get mentally drained when we are around people, and we go home and just fall out sleep.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I am very grateful for this information and your awesome ability to communicate it so well! I'm forwarding this to my husband b/c it helps when he hears things from other people who have experience with these things. I'm a nurse but do Labor and Delivery/GYN/Antepartum/PostPartum/Newborn Transition and post delivery care. This is to say, "not autism." You're right. It is very difficult to find info online for parents to know what to do and when for various stages of development for a kiddo. And as he's a teen, I feel like we only have so much time left when we are legally able to help him get to an independent level of young adulthood. I'm okay if he never enjoys being an extrovert. But being able to communicate with others who aren't online "friends," is a necessary part of independence. Major parts of personal growth are easy to overlook but which are crucial to a healthy, well-adjusted and successfully independent, but most importantly, happy adulthood. Things I expected but have not been able to elicit or have not seen include interest in extracurricular activities, be it music, sports, hobbies....except for online gaming with other kids (probably just like himself); Any instances or opportunities to develop a sense of accomplishment and pride / self-confidence....he is absolutely not interested. I just need to find resources to help me know how to guide him gently to learn the essentials, determine what actually are the essentials to begin with, support him in fostering an environment that feels safe and not-rebuffing in order to help him be the best him he can be. So many things you said here SPOT ON in this video for what I am seeing. Not everything. So thanks for sharing what you know here. It was a great bread-crumb in my search that motivates my goal of getting our son the help he needs. All the best!

I think I would have a hard time recognizing these signs as "red flags" for autism in my future kids, because I have/do the majority of these things myself (and no autism (as far as I know at least), and I should probably add I'm not a preteen) 🤷🏻‍♀️ These are still really good things to keep in mind though! I think autism is so much more than the average person realises!

I was just diagnosed at age 25, about 3 months ago. Before I got lost in the mental health system because my sensory issues would get so bad and then I would have suicidal thoughts, rip my clothes off and hit myself. And as a kid I would be fidgety, and in social environments is I would pace. So thankful for the diagnosis now, it gives a huge insight on who I am. All these hit my symptoms head on growing up and through college.

As a 13 year old. This is a very confusing thing because I talked to my mother about this but she kind of shut it down right away. She just said that she knows me and she went on to talk about stereotypical autism. She immediately said “If you had autism you wouldn’t understand when I’m mad ever, you’d never pick up on others feelings or if something is wrong or right and you wouldn’t even look me in the eye for a second”, it made me so mad that she, as a woman who knows how varied the spectrum is, said everyone who has autism is the stereotypical type. If I’m autistic I’m definitely high functioning. I have most of the signs on this video minus about three of them. It’s very confusing also because I have depression, social anxiety, ADHD and panic disorder.

I often wonder/specuilate, at least based on my own experience, about the one sided conversations: maybe they just have nothing else to go off. I know I get 'accused' of monologuing whenever I unmask and actually talk. (Most people I just stonewall b/c it's easier) Every time it's come up, the issue wasn't that I (30's now) didn't notice there was no back and forth (though I enjoy listening to a one sided convo myself so I don't automatically assume quiet = unsatisfied), it's that I had nothing else to change the subject to. I only had 1 thing on my mind, at least that was in language. I might have FEELINGS or IDEAS, but they aren't in language yet since I haven't converted them to human language, so I can't just go "oh, this isn't working, try option 2". I have no option 2. I can generate an alternative option 1 given a moment and after being told that needs to happen, but I don't automatically have like 3-4 things I would go to another person about. I usually have zero, and the ONE I do APPEAR to have in most convos was something I generated just for you in that conversation. From what I've grown to understand, allistics tend to have a whole laundry list of things to discuss with most people. I can't even imagine that.

Thank you for this. I have a 12 year old girl who has shown all these signs since she was 2. She has never been diagnosed due to when she was evaluated (4 times mind you) at age 2,,3, twice at 4 and again at 5, since she would make brief eye contact and engage in imaginary play they said even though she hits every check mark on the boxes when evaluating those two things means it’s not possible.🙄🙄🙄 Since turning 10 she has lost one friendship after another and is now such a sad, anxiety ridden, goes nowhere young lady. I wish more professionals understood girls on the spectrum and what to look for and that evaluations weren’t out of reach for most families to have done.

Thank you so much for this video, and all your videos actually. I believe I have asd I have self diagnosed as it is very difficult to get an adult diagnosis. after 2 out of 3 of my children have been diagnosed with combination of ASD and ADHD my daughter is 13 and is great struggling emotionally at the moment and her biggest problem is socially at the moment and I have a 12 year old son who sounds just like your son. Its so surprising how diffrent autism can be in girls and boys, my son was diagnosed with ADHD at 7 and autism at 8 straight away, my daughter she was 8 when diagnosed with adhd and 11 when diagnosed with autism she failed the first assessment by points at age 10 because she gives great eye contact etc and I had to fight for her to be assessed again which she then recieved the diagnosis, it was so much harder to get autism diagnosis for girls. because they already had adhd label professionals would instantly blame adhd for their behaviour I'm so happy you have managed to have early intervention for your children here in the uk we have to wait for a long time and fight so much I had been fighting for my two since they were 3 years old to just see a paediatrics specialist. I am grateful for you videos because I dont feel alone I'm forever learning so I can support my children to navigate this world it is not easy for the nurotypical person let alone us and our children

After watching your video it seems like my 20-year-old has gone undiagnosed all of these years she had several of the symptoms that you named. She was diagnosed with ADD and I could never get her any additional assistance in school because she was always just borderline special ed but she does have a high school diploma and is now pursuing her drivers license. I’m curious if there is an advantage of her having a diagnosis at her age if she does not want to pursue a college education.

I’m pretty young but recently I’ve gone through a terrible relationship and in that relationship the girl I was with pointed out that I’m not normal and she would yell at me about things like I wouldn’t check in enough or talk to her and if I have a problem I wouldn’t ever say it (honestly because I was to scared to get yelled at) I broke up with her because my friends really didn’t like her and I was at my lowest low and after I honestly had an identity crisis, after breaking up with her and trying to find an identity I started to become conscious about how I think compared to other people, It seems I am a different person around different people, then when you combine say when I’m around my best friend and when I was with my girlfriend at the same time she would point out that I was very different but she actually enjoyed the me. One thing two of my friends pointed out is one if them pointed out that I am obsessed with things to do with “analog” mechanics, and then another person who I know who is a car person said “you’re a car guy right?” And I said kind if but I just research everything and cars were something I was into for a week and then its watches the next week and so I learn about these things and so I can integrate them incase I say ran into someone who knew these things I could hold my own in a conversation about them. The car person said woah you have autism those are called hyper fixations so that’s when I became really aware there’s something odd about me. I’m just really confused about the thing is it seems most autistic people display shy traits and I only sometimes do and other times I don’t at all, I won a pitch competition in front of a bunch of very wealthy people and didn’t break a sweat and told my self there’s no possible way I’ll loose while I can’t express my emotions to my ex girlfriend without the fear of hurting her so I bury my own emotions incase I do. I put other’s happiness before my own and so people expect that of me and I break out of it and people aren’t used to when I do something for my self so I get bad reactions. One thing I’m confused about is that I can’t cry, I only get numb when something goes bad and don’t physically show anything or something will be wrong so I mask it, a girl im good friends with we joke about how when I was younger I had a nickname involving my last name and the word crybaby and it’s so funny to me because I literally couldn’t force myself to cry, it’s not a possible emotion. I know the whole “Boys Don’t Cry” thing ala Robert Smith (just a funny stereotype) but I literally can’t when I hear that song it’s just like yeah I don’t. I’ve lost people and broken up with people but all I do is get numb and loose energy. I’m just trying to figure out what’s wrong with me you know, from research on the internet I might be Autistically Schizophrenically Bi Polar (Schizophrenia cones from the dis attachment I have from the world) infact I found a movie where I can actually resonate with the director, the characters around the main character display the world I see while the main character is confused and in fear and conscious about the messed up world around us. The director also has a liking for 80s music so I give him props there. It just saddens me that the other movies were mediocre but when you pour yourself all into one movie or thing and all your ideas and ideals you’re cementing yourself in that era and you can never replicate that again. I think I’m sidetrack and I don’t remember a point to commenting this anymore sometimes I realize I’m not that special in terms if being messed of, I know people with Tourettes to ADHD to autism and its seems we’re all messed up and that makes the world hard to live in for me

My 1yo son was showing some red flags so we have started going through processes to get help. During researching ASD etc we came accross an adult test. Just for the hell of it we filled them out and I ended up scoring 35 out of 50 (high chance of ASD). Now im concerned that I have aspbergers type autism that has gone undiagnosed. I am 21 today and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder by my GP at 17. I have family history or bipolar and schizophrenia. I found out that aspbergers are often mistaken for bipolar. How would i go about getting myself checked? Is there a way to do it without a GP referral as my gp isnt always the most understanding and often doesnt beleive me when i come to her. I remember you saying you felt you show some signs of autism in a previous video and i know you have bipolar aswell, what where your "red flags" that you beleive are associated with possible ASD

I was diagnosed when I was 12.5 years old because it was a different time, Autism was still thought of as rare especially Asperger's or was thought of as being the stereotypical version of Autism, also I am Assigned Female at Birth which makes diagnosis harder or at least it used to. Plus I was "So Well Behaved" they kept telling My Parents that I was so smart and so well behaved. I also have co-morbid diagnoses like ADHD and Dyspraxia and Sensory Processing Disorder and GAD which they thought could have been the diagnoses that caused all My Issues alone. Or later on they would say I had PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder) and My Parents were first-time parents they didn't know that this was Autism or even what Autism really was!

I checked 23 of these and I assume that I do have autism as a 11 year old but I’m worried that my parents won’t accept it as I tell them about my problems with loud noises if it’s super loud and I can feel vibrations I start crying and feel like I want to leave then they ask what’s wrong and I tell them and they brush it off and go back to what ever I do also zone out and I act like a little child like playing with things sticking things in my mouth and have like a blank mind I say something that sounds rude and I get in trouble for it but I don’t think it’s rude I think it’s just the tone I say it in my “normal” voice is like dramatic but my real voice is deep and tired I feel not real sometimes and sad like depressed like I want to off but I can’t do it because I worry about my family then when I try to cry when I feel sad I can’t my tears won’t leave I have like 2 friends because their the only ones I feel safe with but also I’m sensitive to light and with my parents once more I say things very dramatic which I regret because when I say something like my finger really hurts or leg they don’t take it seriously such as when I say I think I have social anxiety they say sure and ignore me I’ve been told I have a kind heart but that’s just because after years of told of being nice it’s been stuck but it leaves when I’m zoned out then I say something rude and then I realize what I said and say sorry over and over again and then I start to feel bad and head to my room and think what I did I also make random noises at home at school I seem normal like a shy girl but I just have trouble talking to people and I blush easily and then I get teased then I get asked by my parents why are your cheeks red I don’t even know my self I’m just really tired and just want someone to figure out what I have I know I have something but no one listens plus doesn’t getting diagnosed cost a lot I don’t want my parents to spend more money then they already do I just want them to be happy and not to worry about me but I want them to at the same time I just want my parents to listen to me and not focus on their phones and tablets all day.
