This is a great place to start because it's a very basic concept. I think most crafters will tweak the formula to fit their craft, geographic location, overhead, etc. Thank you for sharing this with us.

I like your formula a lot better than most I have seen. I’m always sure not to price an item over an amount I would actually pay myself. We all still need to move out our inventory. The price is just as important as creator something worth selling.

Thank you for your videos. They are all inspiring! When i had my Etsy store open I learned this formula from top sellers. costs of making the item x4 + labor/time/shipping= retail price Remember your time and labor is valuable. They explained that’s the best way to make some money on Etsy after all the fees. I keep the formula for crafts shows and adjust it depending on location. Hope this helps.🌼

What I'm up against is the huge price difference from a local average craft show verses high end places. Example : #1 - a very nice bird house at average craft shows goes for $45 #2 - In a resort high end craft area it goes for $120 My craft friends who sell a different craft in those areas said it's because the clientele are mostly well off compaired to my area. I have seen the prices myself. My haw dropped.

I’m sooooooooo glad you put out this video!! I’ve been wanting to sell my diys however I didn’t know how to do ANY of the things you shared here, now in your opinion, if I don’t have my own store to sell my diys which platform would you recommend for a first timer like me?? Also, does Etsy take a percentage of what you sell?? If so how would you factor in that money “lost” for lack of word? I believe fb is free correct? So I guess you’d have to decide on which platform you’d want to work from 🤷🏻‍♀️ see I thought when you added everything in that you use, you put in the full price of that diy item I.e. mod podge, scrapbook paper etc.. but you just added the amount I guess??? Makes sense…. This video was sooooo helpful if you could answer my questions that would be great or anyone reading could help me out as well!!! Great video 👏🏻👏🏻

I always find that everything is higher priced on Etsy than it is at art fairs. So I would put my prices higher on Etsy and lower at an art fair. Particularly if I offer free shipping. It takes a bit of time but once you’ve done that specific project for a long time you know how long a product last for and how many items you got with that product and you can kind of get a ballpark idea of per item cost. And somethings when you buy it is already broken down into per item price which is helpful

If a box of 100 screws costs $5.00 then each screw will cost $0.05. ($5.00 divided by 100), then add up how many screws the project will use. That method works for me, hope that helps. Paint and other materials are too much work for me, unless you really want to find the cost per ounce and such, I just use my best estimate.

This May sound dumb, but how do you break up the price for mod podge, paint, etc. It’s not like you use the entire bottle.

Hey you are a genuine and honest person which is wonderful. But if it takes 1 hour to make the sign then the average minimum wage per hour is $12. So you are actually loosing $7 per hour compared to an average worker on a minimum wage job. I think you are selling yourself short. Your basic cost should be the $5 plus $12 (if treated as a minimum wage job). $17 per sign. $34 wholesale $68 retail 😑

I don't understand how you came up with some of those itemized prices. Like how do you know you only used 10 cents worth of mod podge?
@OurUpcycledLife
@OurUpcycledLife Жыл бұрын
I just have made so many signs I know how long a bottle of mod podge last me and how many signs I get out of it so then I can do a calculation from there and a lot of items when you buy them have a per item cost listed and that makes it easy this formula isn’t for everyone especially if you have a DIY that has a lot of hours into it but it works for my signs it’s a simple formula and you can start from there and tweak as needed

It's not free to sell. Etsy fees are 13%+ and craft malls charge a monthly fee + a percentage of sales. Craft shows usually charge flat fees with no guarantee of sales.
@OurUpcycledLife
@OurUpcycledLife Жыл бұрын
All of those expenses would be put into the miscellaneous this formula isn’t for everyone it’s a very basic formula that most artists will have to tweak a little bit to fit their product. You would also add the Etsy fees in with the shipping fee of your cost in the beginning

this is all well and good but for wire wrapped jewelry it doesnt work because I'd be selling my stuff for pennies and you havent said anything about counting in the time it takes to make items. If I went with your figures Id be selling my stuff at around $15.00 . Some of my stuff takes over an hour to make and y time is valuable. Everything I make has a $20 an hour mark up on it. Youve got to value your skills.

Hmm, I'm not sure that 10% covers all the miscellany. And you forgot to mention to add in fees for listing items with online marketplaces or renting a booth at a fair, any additional shipping & packaging costs (especially if the item is large or requires special packaging other than a box, standard shipping paper, & packing tape) & any merchant/seller and financial transaction or processing fees, as well as all hard marketing or advertising costs (biz cards, paid promotions on social media, etc) and a fee for your time with design, marketing, bookkeeping, accounting & taxes. Seriously, assign a $ value for your time & efforts, or figure in the fees you already pay someone else to do these tasks. These things really do add up! (You can always offer a discount if a customer pays in cash, like a surprise bonus. Or just know that the 30 cent + 3.5% fee you're not being charged on a cash transaction will even out with the mistakes and occasional refund that are bound to happen with electronic payments.) There's so many costs involved that we rarely consider, especially with a craft or art product business. Don't have grossly overpriced crap, and also don't sell yourself short! 💗
