Out Of Our Comfort Zone! Overlanding New Mexico Series Episode 1! Pretrip For Alaska! 1,500 Miles!

We take our entire family along with some of our friends who have become family on a trip of a lifetime! We are using this terrain as a trial run for our soon to be trip in Alaska! We want to make sure vehicles are all dialed in and all our gear is working correctly! Every night we were in a new place. We only stayed put for one day as one of the kids ended up with elevation sickness, which worked in our benefit as we needed to wait out some high wind areas! Our Offroad trailer was winterized before heading out for this trip and Scott thought he completely unwinterized it but there was still some antifreeze in the lines so we struggled for awhile to find water so we could do a little flush and then refill our supply before going off grid again. Thankfully a wonderful gas station in a local town was able to supply us with enough water to do so. I guess being in a desert, you don't find an abundance of clean water. Hiccups like that are the things you have to plan for. Expect the unexpected!

Very peaceful. Great job. So was that the rear differential gears in the F-450 that got too hot? Also, where did you park the F-450 & trailer while while in the Jeeps? That is a ton of planning.

Yes the gear ratio in the rear was so low that it boiled the fluid. The paint on the rear diff cover melted to bare metal. We parked the truck & trailer at the dealer for the two weeks for them to fix it. Picked it up on way home and did it again. So switched out gears again for 4.88. Got a bigger fluid capacity diff cover that helped fluid to stay cooler and an oversized Tranny pan. Since doing all that have 20k miles on it and it’s been great! But man a lot of headaches to prep for the Alaska trip. That’s the only reason we took it. But can say we had ZERO problems to Alaska and back so was worth the prep! Thanks for watching.
