Well in my opinion there are some amazing people out there using SFM as well, but I agree that it really is a shame that so many people miss out on these amazing videos.

I love how the animators simplified 3d designing the keyboard by it having the old numpad style. Love this!

Really cool animation, to see what you started out with to the end product is pretty amazing. I do miss the tutorials though bring them back so I can create something like this. Keep up the good work

Considering how few have even heard of SFM, much less seen an animation from it, I wouldn't say it overshadows anything just yet. But yes, it does have the advantage of letting the (even inexperienced) animators get on with it by using standard models 'n' stuff. And people love to do creative stuff, heck the amount of videos on youtube about creative building in Minecraft alone confirms that. Hopefully, SFM programs will get much better in the future, so we can see even more of what it can do

SFM was released to the public so Valve fans could have something to have fun with and Valve actually uses it to make their professional quality work. However, making a whole animation from scratch (when done by a talented, practiced person) will always outshine a SFM movie.. I just wanted to add my piece to that...

yes but, most universities don't take SFM for a degree in Computer Animation (correct me if i'm wrong) and when this person makes animations from scratch it shows that they put more effort into it rather than moving Heavy's arm every scene

Offcourse, all the stuff that is *in* SFM, is made by ... pro animators. Son't get me wrong, there's a place and a future for SFM, and programs like it. And indeed, they will get better. But I doubt they will replace the animation industry overnight, if ever. They will accentuate one another. :)

Allright, so lets say that of steam users about 10 million people know about it, and add another 10 million from videos here and there ... that's still only about 0.3% of earths population. Not exactly a lot if you look at it in that perspective.

Never said it would replace it. I merely remarked how it tends to overshadow traditional animation because its easier and faster to work with, since all the grunt work is done in advance in SFM

hey I never said it was a replacement. I'm schooled in DYI animations where you make your own models and rigs as well - my statement was more meant as an observation in how easy some aspects of 3D animation has become, and how it overshadows conventional 3d animation
@webkilla
@webkilla 11 жыл бұрын
And the funny/sad thing is that things like this - really pro animation - is almost effortlessly overshadowed by things like SFM which can make animations that are nearly just as good
@webkilla
@webkilla 11 жыл бұрын
I think a few do. Search youtube for "Queen Fortress" and "The Turret Anthem" - both are great examples of what SFM can produce when someone puts a lot of effort in it.

Few people known about SFM? I will disagree there: Every steam user knows about SFM to some extent. Every TF2 player who voted for the Saxies (TF2's annual machinima contest) has seen absolutely stellar work made in it. So SFM can very well crank out very high quality animation and storytelling. Heck, SFM is still just in beta - and you can load costum models and rigs into SFM (the brony SFM vids prove this) - I see far more SFM vids appearing on youtube that regular animations

John is sick and tired of the boring life that his job provides. He wants to do something with his life, only he doesnt realize that he does, or what he wants to do. The computer and the coffee maker help him realize that he doesnt need more money to be happy, he doesnt need to the promotion. In fact, he doesn’t need his job at all. He realizes that he should live life for a change so he becomes a sailor with the boat stuff.

There's still more pro animators, who upload stuff, than SFM .. or at least I see more of them. Just because someone knows about SFM, doesn't instantly make them users of it, nor make them upload videos made with it. Don't get me wrong, I like it, and I think it's going to be even better in the future, but I really don't think it's that important just yet.
