I dont get why Mascis doesnt play the solo during live performances. It's not only the best thing he's ever written, but one of the most poignant rock solos I've ever heard. Live improv can be cool, but what he plays live is usually a mess.

Some guitar solos should be learned and played exactly like the original. Guys that learn Kid Charlemagne and Don't Take Me Alive don't take liberties. They play it as written. Same thing with Steve Hackett's solo in Firth Of Fifth. Learn it and play it, but don't pretend you can improve on it. " Same thing goes for the intro solo of this song. Sparky renders it flawlessly, and that's a good thing.

Thanks fella. Having the solo tabbed makes it manageable. Then you can just break it down section by section till it is “in the fingers”

SPARKY, Do you roll down your tone pot on the Jazzmaster or what you use for guitar pedals to get that Dinosaur Jr midrange tone for the guitar leads?

Hey Wayne. Interesting question. After 280 songs... I don't think I've ever rolled down the tone or volume. I might as well disconnect them both! For the main guitar part on this one it's a Rams Head Big Muff... which sounds great... plus I also used a simple overdrive pedal to give it a little of definition. For the lead part - that's just the Big Muff into a Marshall. Hope that helps!

@@SparkyGuitar ok thanks because They made a Rams head big muff with an additional Scoop Filter to get that Dinosaur Jr tone. I think he uses a tone bender fuzz pedal stacking it into a Rams Head to get that lead tone.

Thanks! If it’s what I think you mean then yes… but deliberately so. The open B (ignoring the capo!) gives a maj7 tone against the C chord. That would normally sound fine - as you you would typically replace the C with that B. But it sounds dissonant because the C is also played in the chord. Sounds great though!
