Square Peg Media, organisers of the Alternative Parenting Show, produce this documentary. After getting in touch with celebrity couple Elton John and David Furnish, David agreed to fly to the UK to narrate the video. Sarah Garrett, Managing Director of Square Peg Media and mother to twin girls, features on the video, and said: “We were so happy to have David on board, he’s a lovely guy and a true champion of the cause to create change.” The 40-minute film has been sponsored and endorsed by the Royal Bank of Scotland, an endorsement in itself about how times have changed, and includes interviews with a variety of families who tell their stories. Some have become parents through adoption, surrogacy, through a fertility clinic or the less formal DIY approach!

My husband and I are to old to start a family, I'm 53 and he's 78 but we're thrilled to see it happening. The young man across the street is gay and I've watched him with the younger children in his home I happy to know if he wants to be a parent he can!

I'm not sure "everyone deserves a mother and a father," as someone suggested in the video. So many people have "daddy issues." Some people also have issues with their mothers. Why is it assumed that having one of each is the best or ideal way? Two mothers or two fathers can and often do suffice. Besides, men can have feminine energy and so-called motherly instincts and be very nurturing. At the same time, not all straight mothers provide that for their kids. Similarly, women can have masculine energy, fill the presumed fatherly role of disciplinarian and the anachronistic stereotypical idea of "provider." So many straight couples make miserable parents. Their straightness doesn't make them any better suited for rearing children. Exhibit A: All the people from miserable and broken "straight" homes.

You are right. I had both parents but my mother is/was a monster who treated me like I wasn't even a human being I would trade her in for another father in a heartbeat. I would even enjoy just being raised by my father without a mother.

Same sex “parents” can’t have a family in the real sense, same sex couples are unable to conceive together so by saying 2 mummies is factually incorrect! But the truth can be blurred in the pursuit of the LGBT doctrine, at best 1 mummy and a friend!

I guess everyone is different. I never needed a gay role model to have kids. I knew what I wanted and went after it. Sure, there were no single gays (or gay couples) with kids around me but I didn't need that but I'm sure it helps others. I had straight couples around me with kids and they were my role models - if they can have kids, I can too. I never thought the only way to have kids was to be straight or a couple but I was told I often thought outside the "normal" boundaries. Some people just need to know options do exist. The journey isn't necessarily easy but I know so many straight couples who have been trying for over a decade so single, couple, gay, or straight, it can take time. These days, it's not even a big deal at school - some kids are raised by two parents, some by one parent, some by grandparents and extended family, some with two dads/moms, some with a mom and dad, some with a mom and dad divorced, some with a mom and dad living together but argue nightly, etc. Kids are often blind to these things - it's their parents who put hatred, judgement, etc. in their hearts and that's why bullies and discrimination exist. The next generations (perhaps not in all cities/countries) have it good - they will be the most accepting generation ever but I guess that will always be the case as the years go by.

This isn't if you can parent a child alone or what makes a parent or family. My point is it is never a parents choice to decide what role another parent will play in a childs life.Everyone wants to know where they came from and by who.You can pretend all you want it doesn't matter but when your child is older and start to ask question after question then you will see how much it does matter.

u know, life is made of what we have and what we don t have...a lot of children and parents face other issues as difficult as that, and get over it. I got over a mad angry shouting at us all the time mum (really scary as a child!) and a suicidal too..."promiscuous" dad.... Cards u get in life are not easy to handle, having "known" genitors or parents is good...or not, as i experienced it. I don t say it can t be very hard what u tell about, but...not more than other issues. What s always important is to be able to tell ur feelings about it, heard and supported. Any "issue" can be a gift, then...wish u the best in ur situation.

Actually ... I believe strongly that even if the donor is the biological parent, they're NOT the child's father. When two or even a single parent has a baby, they're the true parent, biological or not. I do get along better with my real dad now, but as he wasn't there throughout my life, I don't consider him my true dad. My mum was both mummy and daddy growing up, but I also have a step dad that has been more of a dad to me :)

These gay parents need to answer thier children's possible questions such as "why do we have two dads or two mums?" And help these children avoid possible developmental confusions about gender identity. In my opinion, a healthy child/children transitioning to healthy adults need a healthy mother and father to accomplish this. I would like to see a documentary about these children and hear thier opinions about thier development into adults by gay parents. Some children of gay parents have grown up resenting the fact that they didn't have a mother and father to grow up with even though they adored and loved thier gay parents. I hope these gay parents understand the masculine/feminine dynamics growing children need to develop into healthy adults. These are my opinions.

Well... we tried when we live in London and contacted the Westminster services who were working with other districts. We went to several put on workshops that were very good. We then we got a social worker to visit the house as standard . This was just horrendous, this right wing anti everything that in our house and pretty much said all we would get was at best probably a black child ( don’t have an issue with that) that was drug dependent and or with mental health . Now this is not a problem but to be told that’s all you will get was a bit of a disappointment , there was no interest in helping at all . We were told that it would be a 5-6 year wait at best and even then we might get nothing . We wanted to adoption a child from 5-12 years old as the older one are always left and everyone wanted a baby. So it was all just a mess and we just forgot it .

I just couldn't do it. I've said this from the day I came out. There us no way on God's green earth I could raise a child in a same sex union. I feel too selfish: but that's just me. As we all know, kids can be nasty little fuckers. And it's only getting worse. There's just not enough acceptance yet. So short of moving to a utopian community, I just couldn't put my kids through that in today's social environments. We are scrutinised for every little thing about ourselves as it is, I just couldn't give more ammunition for people to fire at my kids. 😥😥 Total respect to those parents and kids who are strong enough to see past the ignorance. 👏👏👏

Peace be upon you to our beloved brothers and dearest sisters, you kinda need to listen to me. I just want to say that:- 1. Religion is about Peace and Mercy of God. 2. a) Do you believe in God? Yes. And if God didn’t want you this way, He wouldn’t have made you this way. Correct! 2. b) God have made and want you this way, because He love you. So, you will get more closely and continuously approach to God. He want you to love Him more than everything else, and the love that's exclusive only for Him. That's why you have to learn and understand the hidden message of God. 3. Whenever you come close yourself to God, He will never judge you based on your sexual orientation. He will judges and look at you, by what kind of a person you are. 4. God loves us beyond any and everything else, and that’s who we should love first. 5. And in God's eyes kindness and love are what it’s all about. 6. Plus, humanity is about as long as we bring ourselves to loves someone else, no matter what colour, no matter what race, no matter what religion and no matter what gender..humanity just want us to be loved and to be able to love somebody back.

Marcus NL ... sadly, I agree. I'm a man who likes men, but find the whole "gay culture thing" not to my taste. Yes, we needed to come together to fight for our rights, but in doing so, it appears we picked up some baggage along the way... "Pink" being a reference to the pink triangles the Nazi's made homosexuals wear before they were slaughtered along with Jews. So hey, can we ditch the pink, please? All that said, I'm shocked at how far we've come within the past 10 years in England. At least we are able to hold these event's. It's scary to think how an entire civilization can turn against a minority with such violence and disdain. I guess I should count myself lucky to be a young man in this generation. 😊
