I now do all my maintenance myself. Years ago my marine mechanic made a mistake and invited me over for a beer while he was doing routine maintenance on my engine. I took mental notes because I am mechanically inclined. I also make a log of engine hours. Every 100hrs I do the engine oil and lower end oil. I change the entire water pump system every 300hrs. I have a 2007 Yamaha F150 and I am the original owner. 4207hrs. Original lower end. I also have a friends boat parked on my property that I just started to service. It's a 2004 F225 Yamaha. 1130hrs. Same schedule, but this engine runs a little hot, so the impeller will be every 100hrs. Born Again Boating has definitely saved me time and money with the DIY videos. #Gaugesaver

I trust my Honda 200hp mechanic but can do most maintenance myself. BOE Marine website has “kits” that include all the Oils, Filters and O-Rings needed for basic maintenance. My mechanic gets the job every other year to change Impeller, plug the engine in for a diagnostic overview and sometimes the spark plug change as two plugs require pulling off engine housing that I don’t want cracked with my “fat fingers” and “soft touch”. Plus, I want my mechanic to be in business for as long I am boating! Biggest problem is scheduling as many Midwest US Boaters pull their boats in October and most storage facilities want to lock their doors in November. Luckily, my mechanic always finds time for me in mid-November. Be well and appreciate all the knowledge. I actually have a Two Conchs sun shirt I picked up when in the Keys. Love the Keys and can be found there every Winter for a while. Wish I could stay year round! There’s no fish like saltwater fish.

I do the oil changes, lower unit, filter changes, external zincs etc.... I need to do the internal zincs and thermostats and am hoping for a Born Again Boating video to show me how!. ☺... Born in October, On my first boat the following April. For many years, summers were spent in and around the marina. Coming from a divorced family, Many of my fondest memories are times spents with my Dad on the boat. The Good, time spent out on the water. The Bad, unforeseen issues such as breakdows, time away from the water, and weather issues. The ugly, cleaning and winterizing for the long cold off season. Are all memories that I cherish and will pass to my children along with my love of boating. These days I enjoy Dad helping me, maintain my own boat. I recently enrolled in a Yamaha introduction to ourboards class at my local community college. Combined with Born Again Boating's Technician's Tuesday on KZfaq, This course has added a wealth of knowledge to my self maintenance experience. I look forward to many years of making more wonderful memories with my family boating. Thank You for the great content week after week...#gaugesaver

I have been doing all of my own servicing for years. Thats why I'm still running 2 strokes, so much easier to maintain. Plugs, gear oil and impeller every year and grease everything, Anodes as required based on visual inspection. Fuel filter usually every 2nd year, this may become yearly with the HPDI I'm about to install as it saves all the issues with injectors, etc...

Another great vid. Caught your nifty lower unit drain channel made out of a little bit of cardboard to keep the oil off the skeg. Nice touch! I started doing my own maintenance and winterizing after my local marina kept making silly mistakes and damaging my engine (blown regulator due to wiring not secured, stranded after manifold bolts weren't torqued creating a vacuum leak.) I realized, the only one who cares as much as me about my boat is...well...nobody!

I just took it out yesterday for some maintenance, like resetting the carbs tuning at the lake (cause I live 5200 ft above the altitude of the lake). Poppet valves, prop grease, check for fishing line... On 2 stroke carb engines carb cleaning is basically an every 2 to 3 year maintenance item. On 2 stroke carb engines, the engines should be "de-oiled" yearly, typically in the spring time for the northerners. Great video! I am new to having a large relatively modern engine. I’m going to want to keep my Yamaha 225 ox66 running and maintained because I only have one and I don’t want to have to replace it anytime soon! This video for me was very helpful. Well done Aaron! #gaugesaver

What brand of 2 stroke oil do you run in your engine?

Them ol' OX66 are some badass engines. A little maintenance and they run strong forever.

@@sumyunguyz - It's true! The last of the great 2 stroke engines. After hearing about the corrosion issues that the 2000 - 2005 Yamaha 4 stroke engines have, it makes me thankful to have my 250 ox66 hanging on the transom. As a result of the o2 sensor, I run Pennzoil 100% Synthetic 2 stroke oil, but my stock is getting low and I'm not sure what I should switch to.

@@stephenleone2375 I've been running Yamalube 2M and RingFree+ in my 20 year old 200 ox66. Still runs just like it was new. Just put a new 200 sho on my tritoon. Hope it's going to be half as reliable as my ol 2 stroke.

@stephen Leone.... sorry for missing your question... I’m using West Marine Premium TC-W3. When I purchased the engine the previous owner had a case and sold it to me for $15/gal

Yes, you can use a small amount of grease if you'd like, just a little something.

I'm new to the 4-stroke world. Next maintenance I'm doing my self. I need to get a bore scope to check the exhaust for corrosion on my 2003 Yamaha which reminds me!! I need new gauges #bornagainboating 👍 #gaugesaver

A bore scope is great, but if you drop your lower, usually you can get a pretty good look up in there with a flashlight. You just can't see all the way up to the powerhead :( you can also hook a garden hose to the water tube with the lower unit off. Turn it on and watch it immediately to see if water just comes pouring out the exhaust without going through the powerhead first. If there's absolutely no delay and you can tell the water is just pouring out, you'll know. If you don't have an overheat at idle issue yet though, it hasn't rotten out that much yet ;)

@@BornAgainBoating Thanks for the advice 👍 Next time I will take a look and try the garden hose trick. Not over heating at idle yet. Just paranoid about it. Is there any way to find out if the mid section has already been replaced? Does Yamaha keep track of the kits sold by serial number?

Question maybe Florida and in New Jersey for sure they sell bulk optimax oil. Would you trust that bulk oil??? I am fearful of cheap oil deals life is good with no boat repairs. The Biggest thing I did was a complete water pump kit found that half ass job only putting an impeller in at half plane it would over heat now it doesn't.

Well, it ultimately comes down to the marina you buy it from. We sell all our oil from bulk. It's just easier to have the 55 gallon drums and fill up the containers. If you go to a marina that lets you fill up your own containers, you can see the drum and it will have the tag on it with the part number and what it is :) unless they are super shady and are refilling drums with other oil or mislabeling them, you shouldn't have a problem.
