With an older outboard you really need a bit of DIY knowledge. Your video's are an invaluable source and greatly appreciated. I whish when I had an old blue band mercury years ago that I had these tutorials. I did it the hard way back then.

Great vid. I spent this evening removing the lift solenoid from a Suzuki DF50a. Now I am suspecting it might be the motor. It started by refusing to lower. Now it just clicks and doesn't do either. Subscribed.

Tying the cable conduit down can lead to water getting into the bottom bend, leaving the cables in (salty) water. Maybe a water drain hole at the lowest spot could solve that.

Your going to help a lot of people save money by fixing there own stuff thank you for the hard work of getting it out there.

Informative video, thanks. With a bit of help I had the tilt trim motor and most of the seals done in the unit. I went cheap aftermarket motor as I could not justify $600 for genuine. Each time I bring the boat home, I hose around the tilt unit and then give it a good soak of wd40. I've been running it fairly regularly and after near a year, it still works 👍

I like "Stu-it-yourself" videos. Daffy is gonna have a belly ache after the worm feast. I remember when I was in the military and spent time in Honduras about 40 years ago. One of the local families would keep a large wadded up piece of plastic in the corner of their dirt floor hut. Each morning, a member of the family would pick up the large piece of plastic and carry it outside. The chickens would gather around. As the family member unraveled the folded up plastic, all kinds of roaches and other bugs would fall out of it onto the ground and the chickens would scramble (whoever eats the fastest, gets the mostest?) for the bugs all scattering and running for their lives. Kind of a primitive bug trap turned chicken feeder. Resourceful people.

Excellent and informative video as usual. I love watching these simple jobs. Speaking of 'simple jobs', how about a short video on rewinding/replacing the pull start rope on an outboard? Reason I ask is about a week ago, a friend asked me to help replace the cord on a small 9.9hp motor and holy crap, what a mess. When he originally took it apart, he took to many parts off and ended up having that pesky 5 or so foot long razor sharp coil spring pop out and unwind on him while under almost full tension. He ended up getting a few stitches, 6 total, on the side of his right index finger and hand because of it. That's why he needed help. I figure it would not only help on marine engines, but other pull cord started engines like lawn mowers as well. Anyway, thank you again and we shall see you in the next video.

Ive been though 3 boats now with your help. Starting with a 200 dollar fixer up with no kids to a nice bow rider and 3 kids this summer thanks to you. Would have never been able to afford it and enjoy it with my youngins without your tutorials and the trade up/red paperclip method. Thanks for giving me the answers i needed and allowing me to sleep at night 😂

Hello, after watching many of your videos, I feel you are the best teacher of repair I have ever seen. Question I have is, I have a 2023 Mercury 200 HP that gives a tick, tick ,tick sound after releasing trim button, only when motor was trimmed down from about 80 percent to 90 percent full trim down. Any ideas would be appreciated and keep me from excruciating trip to the dealership. Thanks

You can try hanging an old thick comforter behind your camera to dampen the 'ringing echo' caused by too many hard, flat surfaces. It's not terribly noticeable, but the sound should equal the great video quality. I was born on an island, in Brooklyn N.Y. and spent my life by the sea, fixing balky outboards was a way to make pocket money for a teenager. Been retired for ten years now and it's fun watching you do a lot of the work I used to enjoy... 😎

Hello from England. I always end up watching your videos over all the others for these outboard repairs coz you cover everything. In this one you have given me what I was thinking about.... using sealant for the flange on my Yamaha F60 motor replacement. I waded though several rubbish videos from Yanks that re-fitted motors but copmpletely skipped the actual fitting bit... honestly! Cheers mate 🙂

Glad you pointed out how easy it is to crack the flange - I can't count the number of intake manifolds I've had to replace on Honda motorcycles & various Japanese outboard parts that have those (much better than a gasket) o-rings where people just cranked them all the way down until something went snap

If you ever want ideas on the fun educational side ... when you see the big fancy boats with triple or quad outboard motors - how do they get them setup with steering, power all in sync, do they share any common components...if you ever have two similar size/power outboards you could build something similar on a small boat for giggles?

I remember someone had a video on the really old Evinrude outboard motors with the two fuel hose gas tanks a return line and supply line and they converted it to the more modern single line and put a pump in it was that you?

Hey Stu. Who do you have dressing the set this week? An item in each of the sail panels in the background is top banana. Maybe the staff member can change these features to match the flavour of the vid each time? The beach looks very inviting in the sun. Another nice set with a little wind effect in post? Good tool choice and while it’s handy to check correct size with the ‘easy’, I agree ‘always start with the difficult fasteners’. That motor is nasty. The tilt hydraulic systems on boats that I’ve worked on are very complicated. The motor is the simple bit. Cool vid. Cool new site. Great work!!

At the very beginning of this instructional video, you stated the necessary tools, the allen key and beer, but you forgot to state the piece of drift wood. Also, regarding the beer, it wasn't clear when it should be used, before the job begins, during the job, or afterwards when I discover that the trim still doesn't work.

Aloha Stu, great videos, thanks for making them. I have to replace the trim motor on a 90hp Yamaha, but the manual release screw is stripped. Do I need to drill it out or is there another way to get the motor up??

Stu, I would like to know how many hrs is too much for a 2005 Honda 75hp four stroke (with carburetors). I've heard reports of 3000+hrs before rebuild. The engine I have has around 700hrs but has been well maintained. Do you think this engine is worth putting on? Maybe you could do a video on different engines too for other viewers. Ended up replacing the whole unit on my Mercury 150 blackmax 88 model, was cheaper to buy the whole unit reconditioned, little bit harder as you have to remove the engine clamp bolts.
