A buddy gave me a 4HP 1992 Yamaha outboard but it would not start. I checked spark and compression, both were good. Has to be an issue with the carb. I found a brand new carb on Ebay for $30 including shipping! In this video we take the old off and put on the new.

This was very helpful Skinny River ... still struggling to get mine running smoothly. I did find a blockage, but it ran well for 15+ minutes before it did a massive over revving then stalled ... Anyone out there able to help / advise me why that might happen ... I should add I can't get it to tick over, and needs at least 1/3rd open choke to keep running. Any help very much appreciated. Thanks again Skinny River - great to keep these machines running !

I should also add, mine is a Mariner Yamaha, so some small differences ... I liked the look of the inline furl filter, should add one to mine ... if I can get it working again !
@Skinnyriver
@Skinnyriver 2 жыл бұрын
Over rev’ing definitely means something impacted gas supply from the carb. Also if it has to have some choke to run it is NOT getting enough gas. It still seems like there is something going on in your carb jets that’s restricting gas supply. Check your fuel filter to make sure there is not a bunch of junk in your lines. But you probably still have something going on in your carb jets. You can take a really small drill bit and put through the jets (with your hand) to kind of gently scrub them out to get any deposits loose.

Hi Great video and informative, thanks. Question- how do you adjust and tune the new carburetor. Any guidelines and which are the screws to be adjusted
@Skinnyriver
@Skinnyriver 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks!!! I lucked out and mine was already tuned for my motor. On my carb there is just 1 adjustment screw (some have 2 screws a high speed and low idle speed adjustments). I start the motor and have throttle at lowest idle speed. I then turn the screw counterclockwise (RPMs should start to drop - if RPMs increase turn screw clockwise). Keep turning until RPMs slow and the motor almost dies, then turn the other way 1/4 turn. Goal is to have a nice slow idle speed. Then rev the motor up to make sure RPMs increase with the throttle. Ideally you have a tachometer hooked up to make sure you don’t exceed rates RMPs at max throttle. But if you set idle speed you should be ok.

Hi, i bought blindly one of these oldtimers. Had a first test run in a barrel, runned nicely, time to go on to the water, then the problems started, No power, bogging down, but on neutral revvs up like an animal. Time to think and take advice, changed piston and rings, every seal and the jets in the carb, also main diafragma etc. Runs perfect on idle, but still Under load bogging down, going somewhere half gas, but there is an important clue, adjusment screw for the mix does not do anything. Back home unscrew the thing, and got me thinking, is the mix screw pointi until the end, full sharp or it has an end. Ordered a new one anyway. Had u ever heard any of this ?
@Skinnyriver
@Skinnyriver 2 жыл бұрын
If compression and spark are good (which it sounds like they are) you are definitely on the right track with the carb. You should get major differences on RPMs when you turn that mix screw. You are either clogged in the machines channel that feeds the port with the mix screw or that screw is stripped. I would get that screw out and clean out that passage extremely well
@niggastarr
@niggastarr 2 жыл бұрын
@@Skinnyriver they are yes, new plug and new piston set, and turning the mix does nothing, all the way olen and also all the way closed, exactly the same engine work. Im questioning in the mix screw. Is it compromised or been changed by someone. Thnx for the reply. Edit starts really good and also squirts gas very nicely to the endine, nice cloud
@Skinnyriver
@Skinnyriver 2 жыл бұрын
@@niggastarr I would put $100 on it that the screw is compromised and you mix is too rich. If it was too lean you would probably have a hard time starting and wouldn’t get a good mist

@Skinnyriver
@Skinnyriver 3 жыл бұрын
When you say “mix the gas” are you talking about mixing gas and oil? If it’s a 2stroke you have to mix. If it’s a 4stroke straight gas is ok. I think the 4AC is a 2stroke, but download the manual to double check. Also if there is no oil tank it’s a 2stroke and you have to mix.

@@Skinnyriver I have it as well, the same than this. My problem is very weird, after 15-20 minutes full loaded, the engine don't breathe fuel. The pipes before pump, includind the filter are empty. It is a kind of the engine cannot make the vacuum, I dont know at all. Even, if you push fuel again into the pipes, the engine work perfectly untill the fuel is burned. Do you have any idea??
@Skinnyriver
@Skinnyriver 11 ай бұрын
@Joseillo500 my initial thought is there is a fuel pump issue or there is an air leak in your lines (basically sucking air). Are you using an internal or external tank? It definitely seems something is preventing gas flow. Possible reasons: Gas tank not venting in air (preventing gas from flowing out) Air leak in lines Blockage or kinked line Fuel pump not working correctly If you motor runs when it has fuel then it is creating needed vacuum to get gas from carb to motor. Motor vacuum does not pull gas in gas lines, it only pulls gas from carb bowl to motor
@Joseillo500
@Joseillo500 11 ай бұрын
@@Skinnyriver it happens with both, external and internal tank. I think the engine is not dimensined correctly to go full loaded and after 15-20 min, it stuck and the pump colapse or the air enter into the carb fuel pool. If the motor work a mid load, there is no problem. The pump is quite small.
@Skinnyriver
@Skinnyriver 11 ай бұрын
@Joseillo500 yeah that is weird. It definitely seems your fuel system is not able to send enough gas supply to keep up with full load. I would change the fuel filter as an easy cheap check and then pull the gas lines to see if there is any degradation or contamination. Also the carb inlet needle valve or float may not be opening all the way. Let me know if you figure it out… I am curious what the fix is if you find it
