I do not like this book. I don’t know many people who do like this book. But there are so many layers to what is wrong with it that a full dissection feels perfectly warranted this time.

I was so bothered by that Squirrelflight-Hollypaw conversation back when I read it and wasn't sure why. Aaand yep turns out I'm asexual 😂

Hahaha same! I'm asexual too, but I think Hollyleaf might also be aromantic, because I can still have romantic crushes and I am interested in romantic relationships. I just couldn't care less about/ don't really feel sexual attraction

As much as this book might be disliked/criticized by the community at large, tbh it will always have a special place in my heart because of when it came out- I was really sick as a kid, and at the time Outcast was released I was in the hospital because of how sick I was and I can remember so vividly the excitement when my mom showed me the book she’d brought me. Just seeing the (original!) cover for the first time is burned into my memory. Having a new book from my favourite series was one of the biggest bright spots of that hospital stay, and so no matter how the book objectively measures up I can’t bring myself to really have any negative feelings towards it, haha.

Honestly I read this series in school and they didn’t have outcast, I went from Dark River to Eclipse and didn’t miss a thing. They talked about the mountain and journey, but it didn’t do anything for the plot, so I was able to just keep reading the books without needing to read Outcast. When I did eventually read it I found it boring and grating to read, I was sad Stoneteller and the Tribe were made to be weaker because I always wanted to see them prove that clan ways weren’t superior. But that didn’t happen. I hope we don’t go back to the tribe, the clans have already ruined that sadly.

So, a confession: when I got that book(in french, I wasn't good at english back then) on christmas 2012, at the age of 10, I devoured it, and then for the next nearly 3 years, I considered it my favorite book of warrior cats. How did that happen? Well, a couple reasons. First, it was a complete surprise. I had asked my parents to get me Dark River for Christmas, which I previously considered my favorite warrior cat book(I still really like this one even now, probably always will:D), but when I opened the package, there were not one but two warrior cats books. In the following years, it became sort of a tradition for me to get one translated warrior cats book in the spring, and one on christmas. This lasted until the end of arc 4, where I finally started reading them in english. I think all of those positive memories helped it stand out in my mind. Second, I adored two of the protagonists, Hollypaw and Jaypaw, so anything that featured their povs was better by default in my eyes. They're still my favorite characters pretty much, but it not longer automatically means that I'll like a book with them. Third, I loved learning more about the ''lore'' of warrior cats. So, Fallen Leaves's character in Dark River was super interesting, learning that the tribe originally lived near the lake was super interesting, and seeing it happening in long shadows's weird time travel plotline was even more interesting(to me).

smh im a minute late bit more on topic, am I weird for liking the tribe? I know a lot of people dont like them, but thats because boring chapters surrounding the tribe from the eyes of our protagonists. I like the concepts behind the tribes, them being there before the clans existed. Splitting their group into 2 separate parts that fit as a whole group. I want to know more about them that isnt a cat calling their customs weird and wrong. I want to know a day in a tribe chat's eyes. I want to see HOW different their life is compared to a classic clan cat.

It's not that people don't like the *tribe* , it's that people don't like how the Erins/clans (I guess) *treat* the tribe. It bears a lot of parallels to how white people treated Native Americans in about the 1850s onward through about the '40s or even longer... "YOUR CULTURE IS WEIRD AND WRONG, SO THEREFORE YOU AREN'T NORMAL SO YOU MUST ASSIMILATE WITH US TO BE CONSIDERED NORMAL!" Their children/teens were sent off to reformatory schools where it was basically drilled into them how weird and wrong, or even stupid, their culture/traditions were. They were treated very similarly to how the tribe and any other group that isn't the clans are often treated in this series.

i like the tribe as a concept, but yeah its ruined by the clans having a fit over "oh we dont do stuff like that, how dare you not be exactly like us"?? like, the first book they showed up there was literally none of that. i wish it stayed that way.

Yeah it was a LOOONG time ago, I forget if it was on FB or an author chat. To be fair, while the execution itself was poor, it's not that awful of an idea: show two very different cultures with different religions getting along in a children's book.

In my own Rewrite I’m giving Hollypaw to BrightHeart LeafPool fakes a sign to make Jaypaw her apprentice Jealous of how close her kids have become with BrambleClaw and SquirrelFlight. Lionpaw starts with AshFur but is given to BrackenFur after Ashfur tries to kill him And accidentally admit you’ve been holding Lionpaw back to Spite BrambleClaw and SquirrelFlight Which gets him Confined to Camp

I didn't...hate this book. Honestly, I felt that there was more going on than the two previous books. Even the clan stuff didn't feel like a drag this time, as I found the Lionblaze/Ashfur fight pretty intense and foreshadowing. Plus, I like that all the Three had a reason to make the journey to the Tribe, had Jayfeather try to seek advice from Stoneteller, and that Lionblaze finally got to show off his power. And even if it was filler, the Tribe plot still had potentially. Instead having the Tribe pretty much submit to the way of the clans, why couldn't there have been compromise that reinforced the strength of their culture? Like, what if there were cats that were assigned to second-in-command, deputy-like roles for both Cave-guards and Preyhunters, showing the strength and potential of both ranks with someone acting as their head? And, in addition to this, I feel it wasn't just the Tribe members who got the shaft in terms of characterization. If the reason for this book's plot was because of Stormfur and Brook's banishment (the book is called Outcast for goodness sake), why were they given so little to do? They could have been at the forefront of this mission, working to earn their place back in the Tribe, and perhaps taking on those second-in-command roles I mentioned. Stripes and his crew could have also been more interesting and threatening as villains, instead of the ragtag diet Bloodclan bunch they were portrayed, they could have been a real force to be reckoned with.
