One modification to the contents of this video that we've discovered through much experience and customer feedback: it's actually preferable NOT to pack the shoulders and upper arms too tightly, to allow for more mobility in the shoulder, which will facilitate the execution of all types of shoulder locks, as well as head & arm strangulations. And yes, this is still the case for the new & improved SMARTY 2.0, as well as Kid & XL models, albeit not quite as much as for the original 1.0 design. Hope this helps! - Patrick

The grappling smarty is amazing. We have both a lay flat and a Gus dummy. The grappling smarty is next level. It took an afternoon to get the clothes from goodwill, wash and dry them at the laundromat, fill and put a gi on Smarty. Today was the first time I was able to roll with smarty. It is amazing how lifelike it is to drill with when filled as y’all recommend. The weight is very similar to rolling with a 180# training partner. You guys have hit the nail on the head. The way the arms and legs are bent it takes some precision to hit the hips with the knee when doing knee slices. Knee on belly is lifelike too. Thanks to whoever engineered this thing as you guys got it right. Btw I told my 5 year old grandson we were getting a new smarty training dummy and he got a kick out of the name

Folks, I am posting my product review for the Grappling Smarty. I hope that's ok! First off; 4 stars out of 5! I unpacked it and threw a spare gi on it right away so I could do lapel chokes and spider guard. I compared the Grappling Smarty to some cheap cloth ones my school bought for the lock down, and to the Fairtex grappling dummy. I'm a bit of a slow learner, so I often need to review moves at home after class. Also, I do shift work, so sometimes I just can't make it to class. With the covid lock down, I often train in my garage. I looked long and hard at other dummies; I vote for the Grappling Smarty. Here's why. Size: It's about 5'7, reasonably anatomically correct, with the right proportions. It's like rolling with a partner who has a stocky build with wide lats and glutes. I like that it has round knubs for a closed fist shape, and feet for ankle and heel hook locks. SUGGESTION; for a new model, please give the head more of a real shape if possible, and chin and more neck. It's not bad for rear naked chokes, but not quite there yet. I found a size A2 BJJ gi was a little tight on it, so I threw on a size 3 judo gi instead and it fits. WARNING: since bjj gi's have narrower sleeves, it's a lot of work it slip the Smarty's "hands' through the bjj gi. Judo gi sleeves are wider and fit the "hands" better. Weight: at 50 lbs, it was plenty heavy. It was like really moving a real person. Doing sweeps from guard bottom, rolling back takes, etc felt like a light workout. I would not want this heavier. Stiffness: mine came pre-filled. It had the "density" or feel of yanking on a real body. Some other grappling dummies are either too hard or soft. Holding it in my guard, doing kesa gatame, etc felt pretty real. The Fairtex is way to stiff. Position of the limbs: It's designed to keep the "dead bug pose" or side mount top, or turtle position. This is perfect as you're fighting a guy who is framing or in guard bottom, etc. I didn't find I had to "pre-position" limbs before I practiced a move. I'm impressed that there is no internal wiring to imitate a skeletal structure. The limbs are in position because of the cut of the leather/vinyl. There are strategically positioned accordion patches to ease up on where real joints would move, to prevent wear and tear on stitching. The limbs return to position fairly quick, just like a real opponent holding his frames. Construction: I'm not sure if the material is leather or vinyl, but it's smooth to touch. It won't absorb sweat, you can just wipe it off. The stitching so far looks well done. I did submissions on it and tugged on the limbs and it's sturdy. You can strike it too without worry. I'm sure over time it would soften up a little, but apparently, you can stuff it more if you want. Practicality/realism: I put it in every position on the ground I could think of; mount top/bottom, guard top/bottom, side mount top/bottom, turtle, etc. I like the position, size, proportion of this thing, gotta admit. Obviously, you can do ground and pound on it. I don't have the hanging harness you can use to hang it from the ceiling, but I'm curious, because I want to practice standing judo throws on it. Affordability for what you get: I know times are tough for all of us, so price for quality is important. I am happy that I got what I paid for. If bjj is gonna be my lifelong hobby, the $550 or so bucks I paid is small in the long run. I know there are cheaper dummies out there, but I don't think they would compare well to the Grappling Smarty. I have used the Fairtex grappling dummy, and prefer the Grappling Smarty. Not to slam Fairtex , BUT: they charge a whopping $900 PLUS shipping, it's way too stiff, too dense, way too heavy, and the limbs aren't positioned as well as the Grappling Smarty. However, I DO like that the Fairtex feels more realistic to rear naked choke. The biggest disadvantage for me was the high price, and that's BEFORE shipping! The Grappling Smarty moves and feels more like a real person ( for a dummy that is). Over all, I am very happy with my purchase! Thank you to the owner, Patrick!

Something I did. I found these pool noodles that you can adjust their shape (they basically have spines inside). I built a skeletons with the noodles. Now I can adjust the body into different positions and it holds its adjustments. Also makes joint lock much more satisfying. It did make it much harder to stuff though 😕

Really tempted to give this a try, I was just wondering whether it is strong enough to fill with a combination of maybe sand to make it heavier. I tried a friends cheap dummy, although I still think it was helpful I would of liked it heavier so I have to put effort into sweeping etc Thanks

Could you use poly fill for the entire thing? I bought a 20lb case without realizing you only suggest 2lbs haha… I have about 10 lbs of fabric too.

How do you know if you've filled the legs too heavy without having gotten up to the hips yet? Don't want to have to take it all the way out again but I'm already done up to upper thighs and the legs feel really heavy already. I did polyfill mid-shin (would you have advised filling whole shin with polyfill if you have enough to make it as light as possible so that it props up when in a supine position or the dummy would be too light?), and then stuffed fabric between the polyfill and the outer shell around mid-shin and upwards and when I got to the knee caps, it was pretty heavy already... do I take everything out now and restart or what? Would really appreciate your help. Thank you!! I spent already 5 hours straight filling with legs, 1 fabric at a time... my fingers are like in pain lol. Didn't expect it to take this long..

Hey, expecting one soon in the mail. Have you tried pool noodles? Would they be any good for the limbs with additional fabric packing, or does this make it too hard to fill?

I just filled the Smarty kids and it was extremely hard to get my arm down the feet and hands to the bottom tips. I pushed it through best I could but it was a bit difficult. The quality is super awesome. I literally stuffed it and pulled it and can feel the quality for sure. Will update after my kids open it and use it for Christmas. In my opinion id rather pay the extra money to fill it. Took me about two and a half hours. Looks easier in the video but I digress😂. Can't wait to see my kids practice with it.

When filling the smarty with sheets, should I try to scrunch the sheets up? Or keep them flat?

I never looked more ridiculous than when my wife walked in on me ramming a wooden dowel into this things opening in the back to stuff the clothing down into one of the legs -- the dummy sitting backwards on my lap, one hand reaching around to grab its throat and hold it in place while my other rammed the dowel down into the leg.

Is there any reason you shouldn't fill the whole thing with polyester filling? Or is it the most ideal, but the only thing is cost - and that's why clothing cut is better (besides the limbs as you mentioned)?
