Hiking in frosty landscape and making potato hodgepodge (pyttipanna). Götaälv, Trollhättan. I was surprised how effective the winter attachment worked on the Trangia alco burner.

In this link Trangia shows their official winter attachment instruction : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d72na8uh1dCdZJs.html I forgot to show the aluminium plate that is included in the kit. You put that under the stove for two reasons, to get a steady base in deep snow and to reflect heat to keep the burner warm. On the Trangia 25 it fits like in the video with convex side up, on the 27 You use it with convex side down as a plate. Ofc the plate could be used as a plate too (to eat on). 😁

I just watched this video again. That demonstration of the preheater letting the flame bloom is probably the best one I've seen. I've shared this video with a few people who just don't believe how well they actually work. Thanks for this and all your other videos - I find them very good. All the best. Glen, Tasmania.

Thanks! That was a nice hike 💪🤠🔥. My dog Qonrad is of hunting breed and I used him for hunting, I definitely needed to have him in leash when not hunting, as well as everyday walks. He was my best friend ❤️ unfortunately he past away last year. The 27 i probably the stove i have used most of my different Trangias. Are You using Yours on day hikes or on longer hikes? Happy trails Carmen!

@@Braapncamp the 27 is for regular car/tent camping since I go for 2-3 weeks at a time, the 28 (mini) is always in my car for off roading spare of the moment coffee or a light lunch, I have the gas insert in case of fire bans when alcohol burners are not allowed, absolutely love them. So Sorry to hear about your dog, I have a 15 year old whippet mix, he’s getting there and a 5 year old pit bull. I live in the mountains in California and have seen plenty what coyotes can do to big dogs thus I keep mine leashed at all times, we have plenty of mountain lions too and they’d love a dog snack.

Thanks D man! I have reflected over this as well, Scandinavian outdoor equipment seem to appeal to hikers and outdoors folks world wide. Functionality and traditions might be a part of the success. I know that some of these companys that have kept the production in the area have grown so fast le last years so they struggle with capacity. I use to stop at the factories when possible on my van trips, the Trangia folks at the office was just amazing and let me in for a tour. At Gränsfors on my last summer trip, the forge was open for manufacturing, but all visits and the factory shop was corona closed, as many other things we tried to visit this summer. I tend to stick with many of the brands as well, but are always curious of what practical and well engineered stuff there are out there. Skål and happy trails!

Thanks! Sorry for beeing unclear Magnus. The preheter just helps alcohol reach the flas-point, ignite and the time for the burner to bloom. Ofc you can just store the fuel and burner close to body. The video shows that the burner with preheter keeps a more intense flame thru the hole burning time. This actually makes difference around freezing temps so it does not require to be very cold before it getting handy.

Love the drone intro and outro :-D Really good and makes you see the trip from a much better perspective... It lookes like the winter attachment is a "must have" for everyone who use the alcohol burner in the winter. How long will the pad last? did not catch you mention it in the movie? I think Santa will drop me a drone for christmas. I stated very clearly that i have been nice for one year in the letter i sent him :-P
@Braapncamp
@Braapncamp 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's not really a must have, in this mild temps and even colder the burner works anyway. But i must say that it made difference, so i'm happy with this winter improvement. It does not ad any weight or voulme to talk about. Not sure how long the pad last, but it will work without it. Did not see any sign of use the couple of times a have used it. Drone are fun, but ads a moment of tech time when outdoors. Both fun, useful and at the same time takes some of your moment to enjoy the outdoors ;) I've had it for clooser to two years, a Mavic Air and it does it's job while easy to carry. Even at backpacking. The new Mini looks as an option too, but there are much to conciderand learn before a purchase. Haha, sure You have been nice! :D

Thanks for making these videos. I recently cooked some burgers on the trangia (my first time using the trangia 25 setup, prior to that I had always used the burner in the solo stove as a stand) using the frybake expedition pan (decent fit on the brackets, where the trangia frypan would go). It did cook the burgers, but I went through about 5 ounces of yellow heet to do it (had to switch to second filled burner after first went out; I am getting nowhere near 30 minutes out of the trangia burner filled up to flat part per directions). Pan never got above a simmer/sizzle, and I did use the tight-fitting frypan lid. There was no wind really, and it was about 20 degrees F out there. I actually am OK with how it went, as my biggest fear cooking on camp stoves is burning stuff. However, with all the talk about how well the trangia cook set performs in cold weather, I was surprised the pan never got hotter and that I had to use so much alcohol. Am I expecting too much from the trangia in that temperature with the pan at the frypan height? Are most of these comments I see about how well the trangia does in cold weather referring to boiling water in the saucepan, which sits much lower and is inside the top "bowl", thus getting more heat (I assume) from the burner? Just curious if perhaps there's something I could be doing better if I need more heat at frypan height in 20 degree weather. It does get a lot colder here sometimes. Thanks for any feedback on that. From your video, the flame from the burner is pretty powerful, I didn't see behavior like that, and was not using simmer ring.
@Braapncamp

Thanks for this comment! Not sure how Yellow Hear compares to the Ethanol or Tenol (Ethanol with 5-10% methanol) we use over here. I have actually at one occation barely been able to fry sausages i the pan but it was half storm outside at that time. I those conditions one should cook Imin the pans instead. I have some more videos making burgers in cold winter and that was no problem at all, those got really hot fried. So You might try other ethanol fuels? The original frypan works better than a custom one i have. Regarding burning time i definately get around 30 min out of a 2/3 or slightly more filled burner. I hope someone else also could give there best tips in this thread!

I have had the same experience many years back. After watching Trangia video tips here on KZfaq I saw one using an outer extra wind shield while using the pan. I reckon because of the space between the Trangia wind shield and the pan, the heat is reduced and therefore an extra wind shield that cover the hole Trangia cooker would maybe solve some of the heat reduction ? Coghlan's lightweight aluminum wind screen or similar... Take care, and be safe!

Great video, really helpful. I'm about to buy my first Trangia and've got two questions for you. 1. I'm considering buying two burners in case one gets empty mid-cooking, any opinion on whether this would be money well spent? 2. The preheating is due to the burner being cold, right? Seems to be a easy fix would be to carry the burner in a pocket close to the body. Am I on to something here?
@Braapncamp
@Braapncamp 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dinger. You can never get to many burners 😂 If You plan to cook meals that require more than 30 min cooking time, then this is a great way to solve this (or get as gas burner). I have done this but must say that this is very rare, I try to plan or actually most meals does not take longer than one "burn out". Yes you are right and this is a classic trick, the burner and the cold fuel takes longer to get a bloom and in this turn, longer cooking times. So fuel and burner on body, inside your jacket and this is solved. With the winter kit you do not need to think about this.

Hello Matthias. Fantastic scenery! Very good quality video! Great review! And good looking food! What type of fuel do you use! I have been using Trangia since late 70's but always used it with denatured/clear alcohol. I have seen people use "crazy" fuels, like Heet and then the pots get covered in soot pretty much impossible to remove while you are camping. Cheers

At the beginning and end I thought I was watching one of my favourite YT channels, namely Shawn James's My Self Reliance. Northern Hemisphere snow covered forests, outdoor walks and lunches, a hairy dog and the identical theme music. If you haven't watch him, please do as it is fascinating. Great video very well presented. Your dog Konrad could be a star in the making. I have a Trangia. How long does the winter pre-heat attachment stay alight? I guess it can't be that long as the pad cannot hold that much fuel? Also heating with alcohol fuel it's not possible to simmer your food unless you use the flame cover on the burner which you can adjust from open to closed?
@Braapncamp
@Braapncamp 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure for how long the preheater burns. But alcohol boils at low temp so the burner gets to bloom fast even if it is cold outside. When in bloom it stays in that way, the "combustion" of the burner will keep the preheated fuel at temp. Yes only way to simmer is to use the simmer ring, the lid with rotatable cover. That works ok when trained on it and saves fuel.
