Flash Photography Tutorial
This series of videos is designed to help off-camera flash beginners quickly advance to lighting with purpose. First, this series assumes you have an understanding of the exposure triangle, and are capable of controlling your camera in Manual mode. While it's possible to use flash with semi-automatic modes, I think it's a requirement to understand lighting in manual mode if you want to take control of all aspects of your images. This series is broken down into short, easy-to-digest lessons that progress you from balancing a single light, to using multiple lights outdoors to drive home the story in your image.
In this video, I aim to bring together most of the concepts from the previous videos and show them how they would apply outdoors. I start by sharing how I would use a light to match the ambient overcast environment, by having the light have the same properties of intensity, quality (softness), and direction. The color is matching as well but that was without any adjustment. Next, I flip the direction, quality, and intensity to show a more stylized result. Then, I dive into balancing multiple lights like we did in studio, with one acting as a key light and the second light as a fill.

Hadn't thought about the direction of the sun as key/fill vs just rim or fill. Loved this video.

Excellent series Rob, real photography advise from a working photographer. Nice to see somebody teaching photography rather than the myriad of gear reviews with their associated buying links 😉😋

This series is going to finish without any more gel talk, however the whole purpose of this series was to have an introduction for people so I can skip that stuff when I tackle more advanced topics, and I definitely plan on talking gels outdoors more, soon.

I've noticed that you lift/attach the softboxes up to the stand-mounted light. I can never get my Bowens rings to lock that way - either angle/orientation is wrong or softbox ring rotates. Other photogs recommend placing the flash into the modifier before placing up onto spigot/stand. Your thoughts?

Nice informative video. I have a question though. I got the initial part of placing the light on camera left to follow the natural light direction. Why did you change it to camera right later on?
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 4 жыл бұрын
To show the difference. The first way matches the environment which makes the flash less apparent. The latter makes the flash more obvious by countering the natural settings. Neither is "right", they just lead to different visual results.

Instead of bringing in a second light to fill in the shadows from the first light, why not lower the main light by a 1/3 or 2/3 stop?
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 4 жыл бұрын
Because the purpose of this video is to display the function of a fill light. Dropping the key light output wouldn't create the same photo.

How on earth do you keep your lights from blowing over?!!!
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 4 жыл бұрын
There's just no wind in this situation, so thats why you don't see them swaying around. But typically, bulky stands like those used + sandbag on the legs and you'll be fine. Alex was also just out of frame for most these photos to react if necessary as well.
