My rendition of how I started to learn the EZV, not just line up notches with my targets. A beginners guide if you will.

@@OutdoorShellback As a fellow "over complicator" I have to break things down deep and totally understand it so that I can then let go and use instinct only in the field. If we do all of the thinking before we are in the tree stand we can just use instinct there. Thanks so much for doing the video. I put the original EZV sight on my bow I'm not shooting anymore. Now I have it on my backup bow & the newer version of the EZV is on my current bow. I have a small 3D range for real world applications. It's in the shade @ high noon & it's pretty hard to shoot it unless u r up in a 🌳. So it's in a large double maple that I have a Perch for each part of 🌳. I think I have one 🦌 target broadside. All shots r within 25 yards but angles, not yardage is what people in real life situations need to think of. That's where an open (sight window) sight really shines. I've always thought that a range finder & a slider sight while yelping @ deer just gives away your ambush advantage while complicating your mission. I will make a video inspired by yours & I would like to see Aaron Lasco get more recognition for something that more people no matter their skill level should have. I will send u a p.m. when the video is posted. Thanks once again.

Okay so I just ordered the ezv I have been thinking about your kill shot on the lower 3rd. I do not necessarily know much about this target system but, what if you move the ezv further out from your anchor point and sight in your 20 yards? Wouldn't that pinpoint where you are wanting to shoot? I don't know by how much that would decrease the 13.5" by moving the sight 1 inch out. But is my thought on that correct or is it the opposite?
@OutdoorShellback
@OutdoorShellback 2 жыл бұрын
I think I get your point. By moving the sight further from your eye you would effectively be shrinking your target picture perspective, thus allowing you to zero in on a more precise aiming point. However, like you eluded to, I don't think an extra inch from your eye is going to make a huge amount of difference in this case. I went back to the video and watched the part about the bottom third, and I think I see your point there as well. Aaron at EZV, I think, developed the sight with that 13.5" target size and when you put that to practice it ends up being about that middle 1/3rd of the deer's body. I was just suggesting in my vid that when you get that particular sight picture established to just simply remember to slide your bow/sight down into that lower 1/3rd to avoid the deer ducking out of the way before your arrow hits. Hope that's not too confusing!

You should do a video on how you aim from a treestand. Especially on quartering and really close shots. Obviously one would have to practice but would be interesting to see where you put the v on those type of shots from an elevated position. Thanks

I find myself relying on the top tick marks for the really close shots. As I move out further, I rely on the tick marks less (let the V do its job). Your sight picture is like a basketball, & you start punching arrows through the center of it. If you think of the vitals as being a basketball, you will find yourself punching arrows through the center of them at any angle. In many ways, it makes aiming at different angles easier. I made a platform that sits on the side of my garage roof. It creates a carpeted flat platform to shot off of, & I can move it up and down the side of the roof to create different platform heights. I use it the most now (month or so before season opens).

I shot a single fixed vertical (not horizontal) pin for decades. I like simple! Once I go beyond 30 yards, I start aiming a little higher. Any animal outside my archery range can be hunted another day. I like lining up my vertical single pin on the animal's body (using the front leg like you shared here). Deer are not targets, & I am not a target shooter. I am a hunter. If was a target shooter, I may like multiple pins or a slider. I practice a lot with the EZ V sight last summer. I spent months using it. I really wanted to like it. After months of practicing with the EZ V, I went back & tried my single fixed vertical sight pin again at unknown distances. I found that I still shot much better (being somewhat instinctive) with a single fixed pin . Imagining the target being a basketball worked best for me with the EZ V, but a single fixed vertical pin sighted in at 25 yards still gives me way more confidence. I may try the EZ V again next summer, but it will remain a competition. Not here to bash the EZ V or endorse it. If someone really struggles with judging distances, the EZ V may work better for them.

@@OutdoorShellback I've been giving the EZ V a second try this summer, & I must admit that I am liking it better & better the more I use it now. I struggled with it last summer, & I didn't feel comfortable going into the archery season with it. I am feeling much better about it now. Live animals are unpredictable (not 3d targets). I may pull back @ 30 yards & end up taking 20 yard shot (or vice versa). Being able to place arrows into the kill zone at unknown distances is hunting for me. Using a range finder, slider single pin, or multiple sight is not for me. The EZ V has started to grow on me, & I see myself using it this coming season.

My problem with this sight is when I’m 35 yds I can frame my target so I have to know if I’m 35yds or 45 yds because it’s all in the V so how does the sight do the range I have to know where to place the v
@OutdoorShellback
@OutdoorShellback Жыл бұрын
You visualize your target on the animal. Say a deer, you "see" the target kill circle on the side of it, raise your sight on the deer until both sides of the V are framing the kill circle. If it's 35 yards then the V will frame the target higher on your bow sight. If it's 45 yards the V will frame it slightly lower on your bow sight. You don't necessarily have to know how far the target is because the V is already mathematically set via it's stadiametric range at 13 inches. When the V frames the target VOILA!

It's such an interesting site. I have been shooting for a month. Probably not going to hunt with it thus year. I love a 3 pin site. Eye site is not what it used to be. It's the only reason I was making the switch. I just hate changing. 2020 i changed my rest. It failed me on a giant. . So I am back to a 3 pin site for now. I will shoot ez v more in the off-season. .I am just not as accurate with the ez v. How did you like it for the deer season? And how did it work for you?

Strangely enough I ended up talking myself out of it for deer season last year because I got my hands on a .010 4 pin dovetail that I thought would be "it". Foolish and a waste of money and like almost all my sights before has been sold off. After a frustrating 2021 dealing with being overwhelmed between two bows, three sights, three different arrow setups, two rests and two different broadheads I finally realized that for me that Simplicity is key. Pick something and stay with it. My EZ V is now mounted on my one hunting bow with one rest and one set of arrows.

@@OutdoorShellback Funny....thats why I set aside the EZ-V for the time being. Killed a lot of deer with the setup I am currently using. I LOVE putting a pin on a spot. It really eases my brain. As I have shot like that for 25yrs. -- everything works in autopilot. I had target panic / buck fever BAD and once I learned how to shoot back tension, was able to finally get a hold of the panic. The EZ-V started to introduce a bit of the panic again because I am having to think about the V. I love the V concept. I did like the video because part of the struggle with the EZ-V is that you HAVE TO figure out the site picture. You have to have that burned into your brain so it you dont have to think about it. I am still thinking to much about it. I also modified mine. The marks were to small. Hard to see. So flipped to pro side, adding sharpe 20 - 40 - 50 marks. Made them big. Used them like guardrails. Good stuff.

@@bbruno1973 I split a small strip of black electrical tape in half, & I wrap it around the top of each side of the EZ-V sight. The bottom of the electrical tape is set at the first tick mark. I found this improved my use of the EZ-V. I line up the deer's body with the bottom of the electrical tape on both sides, and then I slide the V up a bit if necessary for longer shots. I used a single fixed pin (not a movable pin) for decades, but took two nice 8 pointers with the EZ-V last fall. I pulled the EZ-V off the year before that, but it's on to stay after last fall. I find it more fun to practice with the EZ-V. Ranging a deer with a rangefinder and picking the right pin has never been my thing. I like the clear sight picture with the EZ-V. As my eyes have gotten older, a single fix pin isn't as clear as I would like.

@@driftlesshunter9200 i put the V on my backup bow. Shot last night. No marks on the V at all. First 2 arrows, one arrow shoot the other in half. 3rd arrow. complete missed the target. (at 27yds). With marks, this would not happen at 27, but took them off. I am just trying to wrap my brain around the idea. Not there yet. So you tape is set at the 20yd tick mark. You line that up bottom of the tape with the top of the deers back? At 27yds, would NEVER miss with my pins. Pins for me this season until I can get the site pic engrained into my head.

@@bbruno1973 I have not eliminated the tick marks. Personally, I would use the tick marks until the sight becomes more natural for you. I don't have a chronograph, & it took some time to pick the right insert, too. The bottom of my electrical tape on both sides of my V are at the 20 yard tick marks. I feel like I can line up the target faster this way. I have been practicing for the past month again. I shoot from various distances with every shot, but I NEVER measure the distance. I can judge when I feel a deer in my effective range, & I want to somewhat instinctively harvest that deer without much thought. When crunch time comes, simple is better. I hunted with a single fixed vertical pin or crosshair (not multiple or movable) for over 30 years. I was sighted in for 20 yards. If I felt like I was shooting slightly beyond that distance, I would just aim a bit higher on the body. I knew what my bow would do. I preferred a vertical pin for that reason, & I liked the open sight picture of one pin. I shot better when done somewhat instinctively that way. I never wanted to guess where my pin should be set for a shot or have to decide what pin to use. I can throw a football at someone from various distances without special sight, and I don't give it a bit of thought. The EZ-V is not a target sight. It's a hunting sight. I have never walked up to a deer, ranged it with my rangefinder, and then proceeded to shoot it like at a 3-D shoot. I have pulled back on deer long before they are in shooting range, & I have no clue where the best shot will take place in those situations. Once that deer stops at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, & 35 yards, I want to be able to send an arrow into the boiler room. You couldn't give me a movable or multiple pin sight for that situation. Using the EZ-V has been a learning curve for me, too. The more instinctive it has become, the more I like it. If guys like ranging their targets and hitting bullseyes at various distances, the EZ-V is probably not for them. When you can shoot better at unknown distances with the EZ-V (vs. your mulitple pin sight), that's the time to switch over. Otherwise, use what is working best for you! I still shot a single fixed pin better than the EZ-V the first summer I had it. I made the switch the second year.

Great video. I liked when you said you should shoot at the lower 1/3 portion of the deer. Too many times the deer WILL drop in a split second and if you aim center mass you will hit high. Not even the fastest bows can prevent this from happening.

Glad this is making sense to folks out there. Aaron from EZV is always talking about center punching and double lung "every time", but never seems to emphasize the necessity to aim lower. Does anyone have an idea why the sight is designed on 13” diameter “ kill zone?” To me a 6” or 8” based sight would be more relevant? or maybe more accurate?
@OutdoorShellback
@OutdoorShellback Жыл бұрын
It's an assumption, but to me if you were to design the "V" around a 6" to 8" target then the stadiametric measurement would cause that V to be much smaller than it is. Perhaps more accurate if you were either shooting spots or super steady with your bow hand, but realistically that would potentially cause a much more problematic hunting situation while under stress. I mean, you could theoretically make it to an inch sized target, but where's the practicality?
@timbow50
@timbow50 Жыл бұрын
@@OutdoorShellback was thinking the window between the arched brackets would be some narrower using an 8” diameter kill zone which would seem to be more accurate? That’s like 40% more narrow which is pretty tight. Then throw in some anxiety at drawing down on a nice big buck you had better be in control. Would it be any more difficult than the mental/ visual task of selecting the second or third pin down and putting it in the right spot? Just wondering.

@OutdoorShellback

That would be what I consider "Compensation". I'd rather have my sight zeroed to where I know that what I'm aiming at is where my arrow is going to hit. I see what your point is, but I see that as one more thing to consider while aiming/shooting and during the moment of truth it's just one more thing to worry about.
@lovejoy1230
@lovejoy1230 Жыл бұрын
@@OutdoorShellback I hear you, for me framing the vitals and hitting the lower 1/3 is hitting where I am aiming. But that’s just how my mind processes it. I personally don’t see it as a compensation, it’s the same way I sight in my pin sight, I sight it in to impact about 3 inch low, that way I put the pin in the center of the vitals and just know that the arrow will impact right around the heart. And if the deer jumps the string any, gives me a little margin for that. I don’t even think about it, just aim at center of vitals and send it. Every bodies brain processes, different though, so I understand what your getting at too.

Months went by and I really wasn't sure if it was just me being hyper sensitive to any sound coming from the bow or if there really was something wrong. I just discovered the problem days after this video went up. I had a few loose screws on my cams where I adjust draw length. No kidding. That simple. The bow has never been as quiet as it is now.
