Thank you for this video. My grandmother was born, brought up and buried in Benbecula, the tiny island between north and south Uist islands in the western isles of the outer Hebrides. I only visited this island in my childhood. As I always saw my grandmother in London, after she had followed her english husband there. But she went back to benbecular every year. Amazing to think she grew up among a community of gaelic speaking crofters. I hope to go back one day, visit her grave and all the other graves of her/my MacDonald family and clan. These islands are full of Such beauty, and wonderful people and culture.. thank you again for this video

My mum is from Harris, they are a very kind bunch of people, Gaelic is the native language. Unfortunately in recent years most of the youngsters move to the mainland in search of work. Most of the old people die off and the crofts get bought up by people from south of the border and the old traditions die out. I have been going there for over 40 years now and it doesn't seem as remote as it used to be, but times change, not always for the best, but what can you do. It will always have a special place in my heart.

I returned from the Outer Hebrides 2 weeks ago and I agree that there are wonderful people, beautiful landscape. We visited some places just like you and some others. I came from the Czech Republic, it was an expensive holiday for me, but I do not regret a single pound issued. It was my dream come true. I left my heart in Stornoway and I will definitely do my best to come back someday... excuse my english, i use a translator ☺

Brings back memories of croft life! Though I was not brought up in the Outer Hebrides, but a wee glen in Lerags near Oban, our livestyles were similar, till the newly fangled electric when I was 11yrs old, the glen road was Tarmacadamed as we called it, and the wee single track road was easier to use! The new fangled telephone was also starting to be common,and a marvel of an invention! The croft house itself, had been built in 1802, and changed little till the end of the 1950's, when a bathroom , two extra bedrooms and an enormous ( to me ) sitting room added! Prior to the bathroom, it was a tinbath in front of the open ingle nook fire place! Later we installed a second hand raeburn, and thought that we were Royalty! We aquired a second hand hot water tank, which the raeburn heated the very hot water to the kitchen and bathroom! Our wee byre was next to the house, and held a bull, John. who served the cows in the glen, a milking cow, Elasaid and a heifer, Eilidh! We had plenty of milk, churned our own butter and white cream cheese! The eggs from the hens and ducks added to the diet as well! There was a few score of Ewes on the hill, and a couple of tups for the lambing season to exist! I forgot to add Bodach the Highland Garron horse, who was used taking feed to the sheep in the winter on the hill, and he too was allowed in the byre in bad winter times, He would have survived outside but he got lonely and would trot in with the cattle, and settle himself in the middle of them! We had some cros, mainly turnip, potatoes and grass for hay, to feed the animals in the winters! but the arable land was poor, and we collected seaweed to use as fertiliser! Once we had the pigs, their droppings were also used in the fields! The old barn was across the yard ( we called it the close.. don't know why/) and a menagerie of creatures lived there, as well as the hay, for the feed! Cats, border collies and pet lambs which we nursed, firstly in the kitchen, with a low side oven of the raeburn being used as an incubator of sorts, and they were there till they got bigger, and could take a full bottle of milk! ( the raeburn small oven door was kept open, as we did not want them cooked alive!!!!! Often the pair of goats also managed on occasions to break in, and settled themselves till the bad weather was over! We used them at the piggery as they were good guard dogs, ( until they escaped and chewed Mrs Darling's husband's combinations!! men's undergarments )!! After that we had 2 geese, but they too were viscious and chased everyone, even those legally there! The collies and cats were fed oatmeal cooked with milk twice a day, and they were good specimens, that was the days before cat and dog cans of food, like today! Memories, memories, alas I'll never see those days again! I have returned to the glen a few times since we left, and was heart-broken, as everthing is geared to the "Towerists" as my old Uncle, who I called, "He, himself" would call them! I left in the late 1960's and by that time he was too old to run a croft, and the severe gale of 21st January 1968, had torn the barn roof clean off and it landed in the side field, like a giant had lifted it and replaced it there! He sold up to a nice young couple who have renovated everything, and are still there 50 years now! It looks lovely and they have done a tremendous amount of work! But me being me, misses the croft and all the areas are filling up with trees, ( good for global warming treatment ) I realise that I am now old myself, and with old age comes memories alas, which I can do nothing else but accept! Even the old kirk and graveyard has suffered the ravages of time, and is different to my memories, but wonderfully is now being looked after and repaired by a group of locals who formed a trust! So time in it's future is assured. "Friends of Kilbride" are on facebook and the web, and more details concerning it can be found, for those interested!...And I must drag myself back to 2020, and accept that, "Time waits for No Man" and the beautiful west coast of Scotland, with it's enchanted Hebridean Islands, forming the Inner and Outer Hebridean Islands, still retain a lot of history, and are able to be accessed on a Calmac Ferry, getting folks away from the stress of the life they live far from these magic shores!......................................old Tich.

I worked around that beautiful island in 2005, working on all the ‘water reservoirs’, stayed at the Barra Island hotel (I think it was called that). Worked all over those islands during that summer, including North and South Uist, stayed at the ‘Dark Island Hotel’. Those islands are such a beautiful place to be, I loved it.

Beautiful memories of when I lived on Lewis, once in Carishader and the other in Great Bernera. You captured the spectacular views and the Peace. Lewis was a Place to be alone but never lonely.The people so hospitable and caring to those who moved there. I will always be appreciative of their welcome and friendship while I was there. A Lands End to John O'Groats cycle ride and previous ship's visits to many of the mainland and island ports have served only to fuel the desires further. I spent two weeks on Colonsay, took the boat from Oban, Quite a stormy sea but fun adventure. They has two golden eagles nesting there. Man, do they fly high. Not a lot on the island as such but as with all Scottish Islands, the open wild simply fills all thirsts. Thank you for your works. I read a negative about the music, I know the piece, it is for meditation, good choice to balance and harmonise to the open wild freedoms.

Bought back lots of lovely memories of my 15 trips to the islands though not all 15 trips went as far as Vatersay, lovely people, incredibly peaceful and beautiful and i know a part of me is still up there but i doubt I'll ever return so seeing videos such as these are always welcome.

I have been here a few times and it is amazing scenery. Family live there... the sea is so blue it like the Caribean in view... maybe colder though.. I love Scotland and have explored most of Scotland's highlands and this video reflects just how perfect I remember it.

I was in Harris/Lewis a short while ago. Wonderful, peaceful, beautiful places. My home is in the Galloway Forest where there are estimated to be 6 million trees. Strange to me not to see a single tree on the Outer Hebrides. Lots of new houses being built on Harris. It's character is changing.

Thank you. Went there last year, drove from the very top to the very bottom of the islands. One of my favourite places in the world. There are two oases of trees on Barra. You missed out the amazing lighthouse at the Butt of Lewis.

These places are enchanting and peaceful.

I just watched a great documentary on Swedish tv. Alan Cumming visited the Outer Hebrides. Harris, Eriskay, etc. Great stuff. He even met John Maher, Buzzcocks ex-drummer, who lives on one of the islands now.

I've been to the outer Hebrides for holiday it's beautiful there. I never got the chance to visit my clans island Barra as it was a stormy day. I would love to live in the outer Hebrides once I have the money. It's no wonder why the outer Hebrides was a save haven for Scottish pirate's like Ruari the Turbulent back in the old days.

The Lewis revival is how I first heard of this beautiful Island. I would love to settle on one of these islands with a wife.

I am from the tristate area here in Tennessee with my blood line in Alabama. I have recently discovered that my ancestors before they were moved to Northern Ireland and then later to the states. My ancestors are from there. Modern Mccrary but had a different spelling centuries ago. Son of Roy was the original translation. A step to the McDonalds.

My Grandmother Mary Lamont was born at the Carinish Inn on North Uist in June 1867; she emigrated to Victoria, Australia around 1883 (never to return) at about age 16 with her younger sister and no accompanying adult !

Very interesting. I am intrigued by the Hebrides since we studied them in School (Switzerland) I am surprised to NOT see ANY type of Gardening, be it Greenhouses or pots. I would miss Vegetables etc. Could not live without it. Would like to know temps for the different seasons.

Hello Dippyfish, no my wife "Susana" is pure Latina, her ancestors came from Spain. Her surname is Fernandez, notice the last letter is " Z" , not "S". I know there's significance with this but can't explain it. We have Susana's mum living with us, she's very infirm needs help with everything, she'll be 98 on 28th of this month. The three of us get along very well, so no problem there. Just like everyone else, very restricted because of Covid. Take care and God Bless, John.

To be on the beach at Luskintyre would be Heaven! But it don't look like they're doing any surfing.

I got the bus from Glasgow to Oban and then ferry about 8 hours altogether . After staying a few days exploring Barra and Eriskay I decided to treat myself to flying back about £75 single fare. 45 minutes!

Yes as I lived briefly on Harris, Luskentyre beach was a gift from God. Would camp in my car around there. Cannot capture the stunning sight. Planning a road trip back up there to do Uist but will depend on if they let me on the ferry
