If you talk to chert at different points in the loop they have different dialogue. Near the end they realise all the stars are going supernova, and says something like ‘what a shame to have lived to see the end of the universe. Oh well, might as well enjoy the view’.

One of the most powerful moments for me was something you mentioned: When getting to the Sun Station, and finally realizing that the Supernova was natural, I had such a feeling of hopelessness. I sat there, and just waited for the next supernova just trying to think up any possible way to save the solar system. I felt invested, I felt like one the inhabitants that had just LOST all hope of a future. It's an extremely powerful moment. It's a shame that this game is one of those games that you can only ever experience once, but it's been one of the best games I've played.

Same. Although I sat inside of the sun station and watched as the sun grew closer as if climbing up prongs pointed towards the sun drawing me in to its inevitable fate. That was the moment when I realized the interloper didn't cause the sun to die. The sun expanding is what caused the interloper to fall into it. I wouldn't be able to stop the seed from consuming timber hearth. I couldn't save anyone. No game has ever made me feel like that before. At least not without pulling me out of the experience because I'm not skilled enough to progress.

I actually had kinda expected that, but my feeling of hopelessness was different. When I realized it was natural, I actually thought I was gonna be trapped in the loop forever. Since the goal of the Ash Twin Project was for it to be artificially induced supernova, it meant that they could easily turn it off. But since this one was natural, I believed that the loop was unstoppable. I believed it would go on forever and there was nothing to do to stop it.

I actually died when trying to reach the ship with the working warp core in hand and got pretty bumbed out about it. Only after like a day of brooding did I realize that a new playthrough isn't like a hard reset where you have to do it all over again. You already have the knowledge to reach the end game. You have the eye coordinates, the location of the ship that can take you to the eye, and the warp core needed to power the ship. All you need to do is grab the launch codes for your ship from the start and you're good to go.

And the neat thing about that exact dilemma is that the devs even put an achievement in the game for that exact outcome. Start a brand new play through, with no previous save, immediately start the final loop, finish the game, and you’ll be rewarded for it. Blows my mind how much love went into this game.

And you don't even need to do a hard reset; you can just load your last save from the main menu.

This game is a masterclass in game design: a big unfathomable universe with endless piles of nothing to explore is infinitely less impactful than a small system tailored with extreme attention to detail

I went into the game initially expecting not a whole lot of enjoyment due to the scale being much smaller than expected. But it really just goes to show how integral a well thought out dense world is in comparison a large empty one as you said.

I think my favorite part of this game is that just ends with your friends around a fire. It’s sad and hopeless but also very hopeful at the same time. Absolutely love it. And there is some insanely wacky multiverse ending runs you can do.

I completely agree. That moment, when everyone contributes a layer of melody to the music, is so incredibly magical. So intimate and yet so grand. Ideally you have spent time with each of them at that point... you found Feldspar, who was given up by everyone. You found Solanum, who was separated from everything including herself. Some of them were so fearful or lonely... but they get to be together with you. You all get to have one last lovely time around the campfire. My favorite part about this is that you can even roast marshmallows and take your time for as long as you want.

Also a cool neato detail I didn’t notice until my second playthrough I did for the dlc is that the Nomai writing for the children looks different than the adults. It’s much more large and messy, compared to the neatness of the adults handwriting. 24:00 if anyone wants to see what I’m talking about

I've always loved the way Nomai writing looks. It's cryptic and foreign, yet beautiful. There's likely no pattern to how it works, unless the creators designed an entire writing system (Would not be surprised), but it certainly feels real due to details like this.

The conversation structure is simple, but actually a thing (Similar to forum threads, with responses 'branching', which also fits because of their overall scientific and intellectual tendencies as a species.) Beyond that, I'm not sure but it'd be simple enough to codify a language. That said at the time of the species' life, they are very advanced and use the 'staff' to write, so it's possible that the language is more like a QR code to a text document. Then again, we're not sure if they communicate verbally because of how long they've been dead.

49:00 “It’s tempting to linger in this moment while every possibility still exists; But unless they are collapsed by an observer, they will never be more than possibilities.” This line is so nice to hear as an over thinker, never being able to make a concrete decision. It’s so interesting how in this context it refers to the possibilities through the time loop, but to me sounds like an nice reminder as a fellow human also very aware of their limited time on this earth~ thanks for the video!

It's also an explicit encouragement to take the warp core and reach the eye. It's especially potent because it's mirrored in Grabbo (Grobbo? Gorbbo?) who has long since given up on exploration and is just meditating to make the infinite loop pass by faster and faster forever, paralysed. By the end, you give up on your galaxy. On your home. On all these dizzyingly beautiful sights and sounds and places you were surrounded by all game. You even give up your life. But that is exactly what births a new world full of new infinite possibilities! And the beings of that new universe look up at the stars, their hearts beating faster at the excitement of seeing them up close!

Its also a nod to quantum physics. A quantum particel can be in at infinite amount of position at the same time, but the observer just sees one of the possibilities. While another observer sees a different one.

@@mangckyatmamon unironically i expected to be scared pretty hard in DLC, but after i played it i found myself completing it without being scared that much, the funny thing about it, that base game scared me much more times and much harder, i were scared almost always and everywhere, because i never knew what to expect, and always found myself being scared of something that was not scary at all, but after i got scared 1 time in DLC i used to it and understood how it works and just started to chilling through entire DLC

Outer Wilds is, without a doubt, my favorite game. I’ve never experienced something like it and the only way I can scratch the itch of playing it for the first time again is to watch others play it and consume any and all discussion surrounding it. I’m watching someone do an entire 12 hour video of their playthrough through the game, and seeing things I missed, and things I found that I could potentially have used for something that I didn’t think of it really cool. Not being personally under the time constraint lets you think a bit more without breaking immersion by pausing the game.

I remember the first time I lost my ship; I'd just arrived at one of the ash twins, I forget which one, when I saw a helix tube coming out of the ground. I thought to myself "well this is obviously a landing pad, right?" So I landed, got out, and found the controls, which I promptly used to launch my ship into space. I watched it fly away, thinking "Huh... Crap..."

I was like you. I stopped at PS2 before and I came back 2016. I missed out on so much great games. I got myself a PC. Games are much cheaper and some of the best games ever made are below $10 now. If you have the time you should try gaming again.

And playing it made me want to play more games like this, games that you can connect to emotionally. 10/10 would recommend you give it go!

If you're going to get back into gaming as an adult, do yourself a favour and just get a PC. Even at the ridiculous prices for GPU's nowadays, it's still worth it over being stuck with a console.

@@crazydiamond8654 Nothing, but a PC is much less limiting. You can work on the same PC you game on. You also have access to practically unlimited backwards compatibility, and you can even emulate ps2 and below era games, I believe even ps3 emulation is competent nowadays.

@@meyes1098 You didn't mention the most important factor (probably because it's really obvious): You *already need a computer,* which makes it even less expensive in practice. If we assume that budget is the focus, it alo feels safe to assume that they're probably not looking for a top-of-the-line gaming PC and will probably be using it as their regular work/general use computer too, then we can think of the effective [extra] cost of the gaming laptop as the difference between the final price of the computer and the price of the computer you _would have bought_ if you were not going to use it for gaming. And if you look at it like that, it's pretty hard for it to cost more than a new console :)

Every single channel I come across, or i've watched for a while that "change" their content to stuff that isn't necessarily popular but that they are really passionate about, they make videos that can all be considered "fucking awesome" and the likes. Even saying it's criminally underrated is an understatement. I wrote off this game for years and finally caved and tried it at the end of last year. It is easily one of my top favorite games of all time; if not, THE top favorite. I've never been so emotional playing a video game. Just hearing certain songs in the soundtrack makes me tear up.

This was the most unique outer wilds video ive ever watched. Due to the complex emotional and philosophical aspect of this game, most discussion is always very serious, solem, and mournful, with also deep respect. This video was a uniquely funny one, with lots of entertaining quips. However, it still shows deep respect and retains the serious mood of the game, and tackles the deep philosophical parts with a healthy dose of humor. Well done

3 moments in Outer Wilds no one can deny having experienced: 1. The first supernova. 2. Entering dark bramble too quickly and get monched. 3. Forgetting to wear your suit before you pop out to manually enter the sun station on the best attempt you've likely had.

18:44 fun fact! When you get to the core of Giant's Deep, you can actually find the part they're talking about here, it's one of those tube/hallways that connect the cannon compartments to the main body, it's incredible the attention to detail in this game.

When my first loop ended it was just incredible. I was exploring the moon and ended up at the planet tracking device. I tinkered around a little bit and just as I put the viewer to the sun symbol it went supernova. I thought it was weird, interesting and kinda cool and hooked me into the exploring aspect of the game since I wanted to find out more of that cool and weird stuff. It wasn't until the end of the 2nd loop I realized that this was pure coincidence but just one of the countless moments in this game I'll not forget.

Every now and then I come back to this video because of the themes of the video and how, with time, some perspectives of mine change on it. The melancholy idea of looping the final moments of a dying system is one that hits me where I live. Imagine witnessing the beautiful end of life in a system, only to do it all over again. Honestly I love the story behind this game. It's definitely underrated! I enjoyed my time with it and finding out that no matter what you're stuck in that loop really hits ya

I’ve listened to this 5 separate times the entire way through. I get a serious ‘itching,’ is how I would describe my feeling as far as the narrative. And this channel is the cure. There’s always a nugget somewhere. I was not blessed with descriptive powers, but this man makes me see why I loved the games that I loved.

I bought the game forever ago, played 15 mins not even making it off the world before giving up and being bored. Years later seeing how highly you talked about it and recommended playing before watching. So I sat down for a few days and had a blast exploring all this game had to offer. It was quite the unique and magical journey I didn't know I'd of liked so much. The story and beautiful sounds with all the intruige and forcing myself not to look up anything and figure out the puzzles was a grand old time. Returning to finish this video and fill in the few story beats was really nice. Thanks for sharing this and you've made another fan of this series.

I loved the bit at the end with all the explorers playing music to collapse the eye and create a new reality. I got serious vibes of J.R.R. Tolkien and how the 'god ' and 'angels' of the LoTR universe literally sang reality into existence all together. The good, the bad, harmony and discord of the universe bound together through one single song that defines the course of all reality.

I love this game. It's really sad that it seemed to get kind of overlooked though. It's such a great thought provoking game, and every time you figure something out you feel like a real explorer. Also I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who forgets they aren't wearing their suit some times lol.

It’s a shame that outer wilds is so underrated just because there is a seperate game with a somewhat similar name, especially considering how lackluster the outer WORLDS is compared to outer WILDS. Maybe after this video, the game may get better recognition thanks to you.

I screwed up awhile ago when I first found this video and now I will never get to experience the game on its lonesome as a first time but If I had never actually found this video I would have never known about the outer wilds and never would have found what is possibly my favorite video on KZfaq and one of the better content creators especially for your long form content You are amazing and please keep living your life well

I didn't know it would be so interesting to see the playthrough experience of someone else. The different order of how they tackle the locations, the things they do, the things they don't do, the process they follow to reach their conclusions. I definitely jumped around a lto more and saw a lot more of the system, even if I did have a pretty solid grasp of the plot by the mid point, simply because I'd probably be too bored to go back for them once I resolved the story. It was definitely a unique and memorable experience. "Skipping" sections by making your own discoveries brings a sense of pride but they're still worth a visit.

Thank you so much for making this video! This game triggers so many of my deep fears, from being eaten alive, to drifting off into space, unable to get back to solid ground, to falling to my death. (My vertigo also didn’t help my play through much.) So getting to experience this game secondhand is incredible, even if maybe not as satisfying as going through myself. I played the game completely blind, it took a while to finish because of how unique the puzzles are, but damn… was it the most rewarding experience I’ve ever had gaming. I absolutely love this game and it will most likely always be my all time favorite. The spirit, love and attention to detail are astounding and unmatched. The way music is incorporated and drives the game is also just one of a kind. Thank you for the great summary and I know it’s just a summary and you can’t cover the complete depth of the game, but you did great.

I can appreciate that the first exploration of Timber Hearth isn't interrupted by the supernova no matter how long you take getting used to things. I haven't used a game controller in years so it took me the better part of an hour to actually get off planet, and I didn't even see the supernova during my first run because my autopilot did a Thing right as the End Times music was starting and tossed me into the sun as I was trying to leave the Ash Twin. I didn't realize the time loop was only 22 minutes until later. Even though it only makes sense for the sun to implode only after you interact with the Nomai statue or else you'd get an instant game over with no chance of saving, getting a chance to breathe and explore the village first was a nice touch even if it doesn't make sense narratively - your countdown starts the moment you wake up, and at the 22 minute mark I was probably still trying to figure out how to fly the model rocket, lol

Big ups for being the only in depth review on this masterpiece out there! The music did make it even better of an experience, it made me feel weirdly nostalgic even on my first run to hear that home planet track play. Awesome mechanics and so many scary moments even though theres no enemies (beside the fish) or jumpscares at all. Amazing game!

Excellent video! I do wanna point out that the Hearthians are all non-binary, using "they/them." This is specifically different from the Nomians, who use gendered pronouns, and differentiates the two cultures. Also, Solanum is female. =)

The only game I hear soundtracks from, and it doesn't matter in what mood I am, I always hold myself enough to not cry. This is my favorite game, and the emotions it brings me are all mixed between sad and happy. This game deserves a recognition on a worldwide scale.
