At the LA Television Academy Emmys Outlander event on March 9, 2022. This snippet includes a discussion with the stars Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, and the producers Maril Davis and Matthew Roberts.
The first 6 minutes are Matthew and Caitriona talking about the ether at the end of S6 E1.
The whole panel discussion was maybe 45 minutes, but I was only able to shoot a very small part of it.

I loved the self medicating. I never felt it was realistic in the books that Jamie wants to kill himself over and over yet Claire is written to just suck up grief. She’s a 20th century woman, she wouldn’t ignore trauma, she’d manifest it like everyone else. Love this twist, can’t wait to see who figures it out, my money is on Briana.

As we know now - nobody figured it out. For two years this woman was developing a full blown schizophrenia right under the nose of her beloved husband who 'lost sight of her'. What a shameful disrespect of the loving relationship based on honesty and trust.

She is from the twenties of the 20th century, when Britain was still a monarchy. Have you ever noticed how Claire has no problem whatsoever with servants? That's why. She's not from 2022, when everyone screams they have trauma because it sounds interesting. Of course, she would ignore it, she has before. She went back in the sixties, before soldiers from the Vietnam war came home with war trauma. You can have your opinion and like any storyline, but don't try to pick unrelated and incorrectly contextualised facts to back up your feelings and tastes. By the way, it's perfectly fine when people criticise a storyline.

@@mamadi8385 What schizophrenia was that? Claire self medicated for a couple of months and she certainly wasn’t schizophrenic. She was traumatized. Jamie allowed hookers between his legs while Claire sat home pregnant when he was traumatized after rape, Claire simply self medicated which even back then was fairly normal. A 20th century doctor doing it was completely believable imo. She had the knowledge and the skills to know how. Others of that time would have most likely drank themselves to death. Not sure what show you watched to get “schizophrenic” out of that?

Cait always jumped in to answer everything and would go on and on while Jamie would/could never speak a word. @@cynthias5014 First, Caitriona is the eloquent one, actually answering the questions clearly and is always on point. Sam rarely does. If not for her, their interviews would be painful to listen to. Second, Jamie isn't the lead character. The show's name is Outlander. Claire is The Outlander, hence in the first 2 seasons she was the clear lead. After that it became Claire and Jamie and now it's an ensemble with them getting less screen time due to secondary characters.

"Not necessarily the way it played out in the book" I get for the show I guess. Its just that Claire self-medicating is totally out of character for her to do such a thing. She knows how dangerous ether can be and she has no real way of measuring the dose plus she is aware how flammable it is and in the books she takes great pains in making and storing it correctly. In the book she knows how volatile it is. Not so on TV when she's huffing ether, then passing out ... with flames untended near the source.

I can't believe it! Their initial reaction to the ether idea was that Claire would never do that, and they did it anyway. They really test my faith in their ability to do justice to the books sometimes. And in the Flora MacDonald episode they literally had Claire offering her pot to calm her nerves and yet have Claire turn back to huffing in the _same_ scene! Idiotic!

It's the writers and showrunners who ruin the shows because they get tired of the characters. This is why in later seasons you will always find storylines where they basically annihilate a character's believable development. Just think back at the murder of Dougal. It was also Matt's idea to have Claire be part of the murder, "because it's so interesting and such a juxtaposition to her as a healer and nurse". Yeah, that's as deep as they go with their thinking. It's all about them. I didn't even mind the ether storyline, but everything around it was horrible and the writing was dreck.

This was yet another terrible idea from the writers, like the gang rape. Now we're cramming an addiction story line into an already badly truncated season. And to everyone who basically says addiction is a normal reaction to rape, plenty of people worked through it without resorting to addiction of whatever was handy.

@In the Moonlight who? are you a SA survior? you compartmentalize & find coping mechanisms. Some are addictions that aren't healthy & some are socially acceptable. you could become addicted to working out or throw urself so hard into ur job ur exhausted every night. but it's not like scrape on ur knee, it heals & u forget it's there. it becomes in intrusive thought & yes, after therapy it gets waaaaay better, u can learn to love urself again, but it's still an open wound.

Exactly right. We know how ridiculous the ether debacle was. Clearly a season focusing on Claire's dramatics proved to be unpopular and that about sums it up. This interview is so one sided. Cait talks too much and what happened to the brilliant ether nonsense she advocated strongly....she is somewhat the reason season 6 is dismal .. they lost their way...it is NOT about Claire and her journey...not what their relationship is about. When you mess with the reltionship, everything else is nonsense.. Cait clearly doesnt understand Claire.. she turns to Jamie NOT ether.. Cait is hogging every interview with her thoughts... tells me why the storyline failed in 'educating us on ptsd'..the true marriage is ruined by writers who think they are smarter with presenteeism and woke... well done on a dismal season 6....
