Outlet guide vanes play a crucial role in directing the airflow within an aircraft engine, like the CFM56-5B used in the Airbus A320. Think of them as adjustable fins strategically placed at the exit of the engine. Their primary function is to guide the airflow leaving the engine, ensuring it flows smoothly and efficiently through the exhaust system. By controlling the direction and speed of the airflow, outlet guide vanes help optimize engine performance, fuel efficiency, and overall aircraft operation. Essentially, they're like traffic controllers for the airflow, ensuring it goes where it needs to go for maximum efficiency and safety.
On CFM56-5B The fan outlet guide vanes (OGV) are made of composite material. The fan OGV inner shroud rear flange is bolted to the fan frame. Its forward outer surface contains 34 apertures to allow passage of the vane inner platforms and two borescope inspection ports. The fan splitter fairing is attached to the forward end of the fan OGV inner shroud. The fan OGV assembly has 34 twin vanes (or vane doublets). The vane inner platform are axially retained by the inner face of the fan (OGV) inner shroud. The vane outer platforms are bolted to the fan inlet case.
