Man, that creek bank stuff is pretty. The patterns are wild, but the colors are so unique too. You're on to something with those creek bank walnuts Nathan. You might think about walking the creeks around your territory and locate some more of them. It is $$ and sense! Get Er Done !

If you want some long lasting lumber to use outside, try Osage Orange or hedge as we call it up here in central Illinois. Farmers have been using it for fence posts for generations. As far as the coloration of creek bank walnut, it may be because the tree stays well watered. Just a thought.

I have a timber frame farmhouse built in 1880 and most of the siding was board and batten using black walnut. It had aluminum siding covering it up for years. I had a lot of it removed and it is in pretty good condition still. Some of the boards are +20”.

Live in SW WI. We finally got a real snowfall today. Yesterday we got some flurries, just enough that the driveway got wet. Today it started snowing around 11am and its now 12:38am as I watch this and it is still snowing. Got several inches of snow, our first real snow of this winter and we should have our first sub-zero temps since last Feb. That is the longest spell in recorded history. So this past year has been weird weather here. El Nino out in the Pacific bites us again!

Nathan, another great vid.! Congrats on reaching 300! I enjoyed your comments about patience as well. I'm a teacher, and that is probably one of the hardest things to get across to the kids, it just doesn't sit too well with the hormones they got running around. Question: Those small pieces you trim off to get the log down to 'throat-size'...are there any small 'craft'-supply type shops to which you could sell them? I'd guess they have some interesting grain patterns, and I hate to see them going to waste. As someone who fondly remembers working with walnut in wood-shop back in high-school (right after the dinosaurs died out...lol..) I can remember using lots of smaller pieces for things like desk accessories, cups/mugs, shifter-knobs, etc. Are there any shops or suppliers that could make use of them?

gotta love the walnut, i have a confession to make that i'm really ashamed of, when i moved back here to Michigan six years ago my son had a friend that wanted five very large walnut trees cut down to build a garage so i did it and cut it all up in firewood, my house didn't have a furnace so i could only heat the house with wood, I've been kicking myself in the ars every sense, i did save one piece to make a butt stock for my shot gun though, such a waist, that will never happen again, ever.

This one has really good grain appearance. Love the sawmill quality. How many sharpen cycles will you get from one blade? Nice sharpener machine too. When I was a child, our house got remodeled with black walnut kitchen cabinets and pantry, wainscotting in the family room, a built in gun cabinet and various other upgrades all with black walnut. Doing so today would add up quickly to a monster price for timber.

I stack my logs on some smaller logs to keep them off the ground. I dont have to many hours on the bandsaw yet but from what I read you should also saw fast enough not to put to much heat in the blade. I go to when I hear the govenor on the motor pick up. Is that what you've found? I have a debarker but if the bark is real nasty I take a ax and clean it off where the blade is going to enter. As a wood turner, some of your off cuts could be cut into cubes ,4" x 4" x 2" and up, and sold as turning blanks. Walnut turning blanks for bowls go for $10, 15, 20 and up. Just a way to make a few extra bucks on what would be otherwise tossed...bark on is good too. And, it pains me to see Walnut burned.

Do you find much metal in your black walnut? I'm originally from the central Missouri area and in the 60s and 70s, we had a fair amount of black walnut tree poaching and owners started driving pole barn nails and rail spikes into the trunks to discourage theft. So much of the Missouri black walnut back then was earmarked for gun stocks and commanded high dollar so wood theft was quite common.

I really would love having a beer with you. Too bad I don’t like beer. You’re excited for the rain? You are firmly disqualified for being an Angeleno. Congratulations 🎉 What sort of prices do you sell a slab for?

They sale for around 12$ to 15$ a board foot. And sorry I don’t drink either. 👍

When the 4 degree blade arrives, make sure your show us a compare and contrast explanation. Is your machine that sets your blade's kerf width set a bit too aggressive? Noticed more on that hard cherry log than the walnut. Are you doing that so that the blade binds less? Have you ever used door shim type wedges to relieve blade bind, or maybe the WoodMiser "don't care" ;-) ; I wonder if you might have hit a non-jacketed bullet under the bark.

WARNING - There is a chemical in Black Walnut trees that causes severe allergic reactions to some people. My daughter's area was hit by a fierce storm that brought many limbs down from a huge Black Walnut tree in front of her house. I helped clear the debris (some cutting required) and hauled the limbs away. I developed a localized rashes all over. It was like poison ivy but painful and it stayed localized. I found out that I am one of the people who is allergic to a chemical in the wood called Juglone. The rash lasted about two weeks. Juglone also affects the plants around these trees. You may notice that the grounds near and under these trees are barren - another effect of Juglone.
