If your data are important to you, you should have them in more than one place. Get an external usb drive for back-ups. Maybe once a week just copy over the stuff you did that week. Also, make sure your backed up data is accessible and readable. As an old former IT guy, I don't know how many times people told me that they always backed things up, just to find out they never checked it and it wasn't there. Good luck!! love the videos.

Amen to that, to many folks see their laptops, phones, tablets, and even PC's as permanent storage solutions, when at best they are data managers, that should be used to offload important Data to multiple other locations.

Very good explanation, and demonstration, of qtr. sawing. It appears to produce more waste with quarter sawing so I'm assuming that's why that type of cut costs more .. that, and it's a more desirable cut of wood due to the grain pattern. Our phones, PC's, cameras, and the likes are practically indispensable in today's world .. and while most are pretty reliable, when they do go "on the blink" it can be a real headache. Thanks for another good one, Nathan.

I love the look of that quarter sawn white oak. Watching you saw it explains why it is so pricey - it looks like there is fairly significant waste, compared to the BF you would typically get from that size log.

I finally understand the term quarter sawn. Thanks Nathan. My home has oak flooring and from the looks of it it is quarter sawn. It was built in 1948 by a very good builder who built many of the homes in my area most of them a lot more expensive than mine but he lived in this one for many years before he sold it. The entire sub flooring is all cedar tongue and groove installed on the bias and after all those years every corner in every room in this house is still 90 degrees and plumb. Good materials with a quality skilled builder makes a huge difference. Enjoy the snow if you need anymore we've got plenty to share!

Great explanation of Quarter Sawn lumber. One of my favorite cuts to work with. Extremely stable and beautiful when finished properly. Hope your luck holds out with the computer repair. Your weather looks so pretty in the last shot. Down here in North Alabama we had about 5 inches of snow then sleet which believe it or not ,Shut down our city for 5 days, it really caught a lot of us off guard with the roads a sheet of ICE. We're finally thawing out but we're anticipating strong rain storms to come in so we're in for a messy week coming up. Watched Outdoor with the Morgans this morning and he was showing about of 12 inches of snow in W. Virginia at the cabin. Amazing Difference in regions !!

Being of the North of Wisconsin, it's always kind of funny when a few inches of snow shuts down all you Easterners. The odd part is, you've probably gotten more snow than we have this year. I feel your frustration with the electronics. Apple is far superior to Windows, but sometimes you have to drive a ways to get them serviced. Nothing more frustrating with a computer than to have the hard drive crash.

If you had said 'Tiger Stripes', I probably would know what you mean, but I associate that with chatoyance like in curly maple which oak doesn't have. I'm more familiar with tone woods: ebony, maple, mahogany, or rosewood. Thanks for the lesson. I've heard properly quarter sawn lumber produces waste. Now I see why. Thanks so much for illustrating that. So sorry you had to much trouble. I recently had to replace my PC and reload all my software so I know some of what you're going through. Hang in there. You're a Mac user... I knew you were a good guy. That hillybilly persona is just a disguise. I'm glad you explained that 'stop' making videos was just a temporary glitch. When I first read that I thought you were talking about stopping permanently. I have to have my weekly fix of sawdust, so don't do that. The winter of '09/'10 I was in north central Alabama, and it was 16ºF and under for about three weeks, with plenty of snow. The 8-acre lake on the property froze over, and all the old-timers were saying grandpa mentioned that lake freezing over many decades before. Maybe that's the last snowfall you're thinking about?

Hoping for the best on your Mac and the data. As a retired data recovery pro (25+ years); I can provide a bit of info for viewers. 1. Many laptops with a dead battery may not start up (by design) with the power cable attached (as you described). Before you give it over to a repair outlet, try removing the battery and THEN plug in the wall power and try to start it up (i.e. while the battery is removed). Many, many computers will then work AOK (but not all). It is a good thing to try so that YOU can perform your own back up to an external drive before you hand off your computer for repair. 2. (if you cannot do #1 above) When you hand off your computer to a local facility and then they have determined it needs to be shipped away for repair; have them (the local repair) make a back up of your drive/media before they ship. If they then tell you there is an issue with your media and a backup effort is failing, then you should bypass the repair facility and send your failing media to a reputable data recovery service. Do not trust a distant 'repair' facility to backup or recover your data on failing media, that is not their expertise (though often it actually will work/luck out OK). (note, your local repair facility will get a 10% to 20% commission on the data recovery and/or repair, so they will not resist you on this.) It is possible (these days) that your local facility will be able to confidently reassure you that the remote repair facility is 100% qualified/certified to handle/recover your data safely, and then you will not need to use a separate recovery service, just make them pinky swear to this. To be clear, if you send your media to a qualified/certified recovery service, you can then send the rest of your computer to the distant repair facility and they will install new media/OS. 3. If you have managed to send the computer to repair without doing 1. or 2. above then make 100% certain that you have in writing with the repair facility that you want your media returned and unaltered. It is has been very common practice (in decades past) that media is replaced or wiped/re-written as part of an efficient repair. And if there was no note regarding preserving original media, then it is often gone/re-written for good. above recommendations are based on the data being the highest value to you (not the hardware). Oddly, it is good that you are out of warranty ... because warranty work is/was more likely to disregard your data during 'factory line' repairs (read your repair warranty EULA small print re "data responsibility").

I hear you on equipment. I installed 10 and the ego's at MS took my 6T disk system with 5T free into a 500M free disk. The disk has all sorts of folders on it that are not used. And All sorts of digital pictures, family tree and tons of data and information Star pictures and thousands in software - all gone. They want me to buy a new computer. Not at 76 years old.
