This is the design, soldering and installation of a temporary board for connecting the output pcb and pallet pcb together at the top of the vga system. It’s produced directly from the in-progress vga backplane. In Vga 18 it was nice to connect the board up with some bit’s of breadboard and a bit of strip board but I wanted to make thingsnice and stable before moving onto sprite work.
There was a couple of segments of troubleshooting I cut out of this, I don’t like to feel like I’m hiding anything but it was mostly waggling and swapping wires to find out which ones were loose. It would have been an evening of editing to produce some very boring footage and this is an extras channel video. I also move the 574 I use as a timing stand in for the sprite merge circuit onto a mini breadboard. That way the only breadboards remaining are for the palette.
The image in the thumbnail has some improved wiring, I made up some better sized wires. This should be very neat when the palette pcb replaces those breadboards.

All these Weird-Boy-Jim videos at once! The world is conspiring to make sure that I don't get any work done!

I was supposed to set these last two as public just before the main channel one, but I forgot. Sorry for the notification spam.

Little Interconnect boards like that make things look cleaner and reduce the chance of knocking a wire loose.

I should have arranged the connections on the lower backplane to make it easier to do more direct bridging!

Thanks James. It's looking amazing. I had a giggle at the ritual double-flip of the VGA connector, it's not a full day without a double flip. Take care

Glad you enjoyed it! Part of me wanted to edit that double flip out ;-)

Thanks for pointing out this video, I never got any notification about it. What is wrong with auto routing? Sure, it won't be as aesthetically pleasing, but it will work, and the computer does all the work.

This is on the extras channel which I just use for supplementary background bits like this that I link from main videos for extra context.

If it works, it works. I've found the autorouter struggle to do some layouts that I can do alone. It's also worth nothing that some of it may relate to better signal integrity, it's worth paying attention to the return path for signals which is something the autorouter doesn't seem to do.

@@JamesSharmanExtras The autorouters also don't have a concept of which signals are high-speed and need particular attention, and which ones can put up with fine traces that wander hither and yon. Any time I've used one on a board that's at all complex or at all critical, I've spent more time repairing the results than I'd have spent in routing the board in the first place. But for that backplane, where everything is pretty much running in straight lines anyway, sure, go ahead and autoroute.

at time 10:48, is that an empty through hole or did you miss a solder?

There is no connection there, that address bus pin isn't used on that board but I used the full width one to make it easier to line everything up.

I could really use your help. Could you please look at my video for the KDM-7 keypad and see if you can identify what the PCB film is they used and if you could duplicate it. It is 16 metal push contacts that the plastic buttons push on and make contact It is about 2 inches by 3 inches I have been looking for someone who knows how to make PCBs and does 3D printing. 2 different people who could do the 2 separate pieces needed to make this keypad kit. Thank you

It would be better for you to join the discord and ask questions like this in the electronics channel. The buttons are something like a snaptron (search it on digikey.co.uk), they are metal domes that bridge contacts on the pcb when pushed. The "cable" bit can be reproduces with a designed bit of flexible pcb.
