One of toughest moments in a higher degree happens right at the end. The examiner reports are in. You are in shock. Horrified. A bit of self-loathing emerges... But before you move to blame - blaming your supervisors or examiners (for being supervisors and examiners) - let's get those amendments made with respect, decency, speed and clarity.

Great and helpful information, Tara. What if the examiners do not hold expertise on what the student has done a thesis on? Is it the case in Australian examination that examiners are always specialists in the focus of what the student has submitted for examination? I don't even fully understand how we do an examination on the American system, honestly, but I am concerned about what happens if examiners don't hold expertise on the topic.

Queen Sheena - great question. The examiners must meet particular criteria. Hold a qualification in the area. Five publications in five years on the area. Affinity with the area ;). So that's what we are looking for - and I also check on their experience as a supervisor and examiner... :) You are the best!!!!!!!!! txxx

While we may believe academic ideals are observed widely, in some places this is seldom the case. For legal reasons, I will not cite any institution in particular but there are places where management due to its incentive structure leans toward cost-saving and may allow a PhD to be examined PhD-holders who are not experts in a field. The ultimate victim is the graduate student as future scrutiny of the constitution of the examination panel and/or supervisory team may cast serious doubt on the validity of his/her degree especially when they are deemed not to be experts in the field.
