Reading one of the remarks below, about actually painting on location: "..it was AMAZING!! There's something special about plein air, a human experience, a real connection with nature," (end quote) < THIS is what I have always experienced. Working from photos, in the studio does not seem to carry with it the SOUL or ENERGY of the landscape being painted, not as powerfully or emotionally as most plein air captures!!

Great video! Very inspiring and encouraging! Ive been painting indoors for many years but, last month I went to a waterfall near my place and did my first plein air painting, and it was AMAZING!! There's something special about plein air, a human experience, a real connection with nature, an element of simultaneous absorption and expression, which painting indoors lacks

A rainy nite, I was blessed to stumble upon this link! It was refreshing to see how far the revived interest in Plein Air painting has gone (and this video is 7+ years old!) Back in '87 the word "plein air" had not been used in the U.S. Art field since about the 1920s! Denise Burns of Catalina Island, while at a Dan McCaw workshop in Hermosa Beach CA, asked me to create ONE nat'l ad to promote a group she started: Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA). I convinced Denise to allow me to set up a national ad campaign, involving 3 major art magazines: "Southwest Art, Art of the West and Artists of the Rockies, designing 22 full page artist ads a year ('87-'96) for the original 24 artists. Neither of us charged a penny those 10 years, to promote PAPA. It is awesome to see how far Denise's dream has come! I'm very honored to have been a part of that rebirth! Watching this great video, the rain outside feels appropriate for the isolation I've come to experience over the past many years, being away from this great movement! Thank you Eric, and all involved supporting this journey. I offer free guidance & help on my website for artists struggling in this field! I'd love to hear from you, anytime! www.bettybillups.com

+fingalificated Hey, it's not even as bad as Morgan Freeman's. This narrator is a little more relaxing to listen to imo. It's actually quite comical because this gentlemen's voice reminds me of an Outback Steakhouse commercial which is what I think they were going for, because this whole doc. is from the American perspective it feels like.

Very nice video, good stuff and resources available for the beginner. I did many plein air events about 20 years ago and stopped about 5-6 years afterward as my job demands increased. Retired now and in a good place to paint again, Arizona, I'm thinking about entering a few events again. I have galley representation here, and we do have a local club so all is good. Happy painting everyone, and if you are ever told this line by someone stopping by to watch you, just say "yes, my aunt painted too"! LOL. :D

Thankyou for the wonderful video. Just a comment to Eric, I think it is remiss to show the history of Plein Air and not talk about the Group of Seven from Canada that are unarguably some of the best Plein Air painters of all time. If Americans haven’t seen their work I highly recommend they check them out as there is more Plein Air history around the world after the first impressionists other than the US painters you discussed. Just my opinion.

I paint also, but I don't have a car and it is difficult to travel without a car. When I had my car I used to do sketches of the places I visited. Now I am not that young, just turned 70, but I paint at home from photographs. I would love to travel and paint in plein air. Painting is my passion and I have been doing it since I was 13 years old. But I used to paint mostly portraits not landscapes. I also did a lot of still life paintings. If there is a way I can travel with a group please let me know? Thank you for the encouragement to go outside indoors. Thank you I have all the materials to even travel with my paint materials, I just don't have the car or facility to do it. Thank you again.

It'd be great if you could add the name or artist of the paintings you show - there are so many beautiful ones that I don't recognise and would love to look up! Also, having the artists' names appear on screen when they're said by the narrator would be helpful because a lot of them are hard to guess the spelling of. Lovely video though, I found it very inspirational! :)

In 2003, I bought an apartment in a little town north west of Paris called Colombes. The next town along was called Argenteuil. I used to go there often to get a coffee, do a little grocery shopping...a working class town today marred by radicalism and crime..most commuters travelling into Paris wouldn't blink an eye as the train pulls in and out of the station of Argenteuil on RER C or the Transilien...wouldn't know that one house that overlooks the station was that once owned by......Monet. I sold that apartment in 2010, completely ignorant of the history of Haut de Seine 92.. Chatou, Geneveilliers, Pontoise, Louvciennes, Bougival, Asnieres, Port Marly...all areas painted by and lived in by the impressionists! Argenteuil especially. That Caillboitte and Manet both owned homes in petit Genevilliers, That Renoir also lived in Argenteuil. Now I just marvel at The Barbizon and impressionist painters. Of the dealers like Vollard and Ruel who brough them to the world's attention. I love it all. AND I love Paris that bit more for it!!! Rain Effect at Yerres by Caillebotte....I could look at this painting everyday! And please, take a look at the work of Stanislas Lepine..a forgotten impressionist who showed at that first exhibition in 1874..a prolific painter of the Seine...whose paintings sell today for about £40k....why??? Amazing painter who died broke and destroyed.

I agree, I've heard British folk miss pronounce French names like Alice Hoschede, who was Monet's patron until her husband went bankrupt then she became his wife. It's supposed to sound like (osh-a-day). Although, they pronounce it Osheed. It's a real smh moment when England is closer to France than us. I'm uncertain about Van Gogh, I really think it depends on what country you're from on that one, I've heard it pronounced, Gogg, Go, and Goff. I do prefer the third one with the f sound because that's how I heard it the most.
