My dad and I have been on a journey to build our own log cabin. This series of videos is a 'behind-the-scenes' look of our bigger "Log Cabin on a Budget" series.
In this episode: I test out a new logging tool, we gather logs and stack them onto seasoning piles, and I deliver some cedar posts. All with the help of the new tractor boom pole. We are now ready to resume construction on the log cabin. Finally!

I have one of these on order at the moment. Looking forward to saving time and work here at the new homestead. From pulling trees to pulling motors to hauling fence posts… Great video! Just a heads up… If you were to add some good “Log Skidding Tongs” onto that boom pole… you would be able to attach/dis-attach logs to the boom pole without even leaving your seat! Practice required….

Having a boom pole for dragging logs out of the forest is without doubt a game changer and I understand why you love it. That being said, as someone who owns a boom pole and a front end loader on my tractor, I'd give up a 100 boom poles to keep my loader. The pole is very narrow in scope where the loader does a LOT of jobs the pole can't do. Having both is the best of both worlds as I can use the loader as a counter balance to the three point weight by having a bucket full of rocks or dirt. When I'm not using the pole I install the rear weight box to counter the loader weight. Add a detachable set of forks to the bucket and you can just about do anything. Anyway, love the channel and the cabin build, best of luck going forward.

me too... just found this channel 11pm in the Philippines Nov. 15, 2018 and it's so interesting to watch video like this. This is my first time to see logging and doing cabin and i found this man too hardworking with the help of his dad and sometimes his brother. I started watching since day 1 and so forth. I really appreciate you young man whatever purposes your vlogs maybe... despite of the fact that you only go there to work during saturdays whether rainy or snowy... Hurrraaaayyyyy

Agree about the loader. Took one off of a 1957 Case 300 Utility, and its much more maneuverable now. They say the loaders tend to wear out the front bearings much faster because of the excessive weight on the front end. The videos are awesome.

You comments about the front end becoming "light" is why they make a mounting bracket for the front of tractors that hold multiple "suitcase weight", typically 50-75 lb each.

You can install a counterweight on the front end of the Ferguson to balance the weight om the three point. Great tractor, learnt to drive on the Ferguson TF , been using later models at work in the 70’s and 80’s.

If anyone is ever out on the west coast (BC) there are nursing logs that are gigantic with trees that are probably 50 years or older growing out of the logs, the roots systems are a work or art, wrapped all over the log. Lots of standing stumps on my property that are nursing new growth. One of the best channels on tube and great forestry stewardship.

I used to operate a 35 with a front end loader.However I got rid of the FEL.. It altered the balance of the tractor badly and without power steering it was extremely tiring to steer over rough ground,not to mention the hydraulics.Otherwise the little tractor was a mighty tool for dragging and moving trees.I just had a short snig chain attached to the rear hydraulics,keeping the load low and close.For good info check out how the early loggers used skids, pivots and ramps to move heavy logs.you're going great,enthusiasm is your greatest ally.All the best.

I’ve enjoyed watching your channel for quite a while now. It’s so interesting. Whether you do things for the cabin or just talk about edible plants, etc. I was wondering if you could put a log or some other sort of weight on the front of the tractor, depending on how much the tractor could handle, to offset the weight in the back so it doesn’t tilt back. Of course it may not be safe and I wouldn’t want you to do anything that wasn’t safe. Maybe it’s not the best idea. I am looking forward to your next video. Thanks for sharing your hard work.

Alice G he could add a counterweight but likely won't require it as he indicated he's working with cedar which is noticeably lighter. He could also likely still skid logs if he wanted yo haul in a larger load
@aliceg9571
@aliceg9571 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. I knew he mentioned that the cedar logs were lighter, but thought he may want to load 3 more and maybe try what I was asking about. He is a very resourceful person. I just wasn’t sure if it was possible and also would it be safe? Always a safety first. It seems to be a very very sturdy tractor. I don’t remember what it’s load capacity is overall. I may have missed that episode, if it was mentioned. Always interesting to watch!

If he adds weights to the front of the tractor, the next "weak link" is probably the hydraulics relief valve, or the boom arm folding. So no worry that he might break the tractor in half, it's pretty darn sturdy for it's size. Note, I say "probably", since I'm not that well versed in tractors.

I was actually referring to Harry Ferguson who was the main brain behind the Massey Ferguson, he was born and bred in Moneymore Northern Ireland.. he prior to the Massey Ferguson built the TE20 or Grey Fergie as it is often referred to, now the important bit, the 3 point linkage was designed by Harry Ferguson and it was first used on the TE20, and is still used in principle on most new tractors today.. I hope this sorts out your Irish myth😝

Did the same job as you 26 yrs ago with the same equipment. I put logging tongs where you have the swivel. You can "hook & unhook" with out leaving the seat thereby saving more time and energy. Also in getting firewood hook the logs about 1/2 way along with heavy end towards the back and they will go up into the arch keeping it all off the ground. I'm not so smart, just lazy.

A suggestion on refilling your water tote you refilled on ep.10.12. When dumping the water jug. at the same time you up end and tip it into hole, give it a couple swirls of 360 degrees during pouring. You will get a surprise at the result for time to empty.

If you modify that pole a little it will be of even more use to you. You only need to make a pivot piont above your lift arms, and extend the back part of the pole where yon can attach it to the tractor where you have your top link now. Then you can drop the pole all the way to the ground and even flip logs by pushing the pole under them. And have much less front end lift.

An old timer showed me a trick on how to empty a five gallon jug quickly . . . after you turn it over to empty it swirl the jug clockwise to start a venturi in the center (much like the way a toilet does) to allow the air to enter the jug without it chugging. This allows the water to empty quickly.

Cool Massey but that bent headlight would mess with my OCD. I'd have to fix that, and the bent grille, and then I'd give it an ice base/clear paint job. Then I'd be afraid to use it for fear of scratching that sweet paint job. On second thought, just leave the headlights cross eyed and tell yourself it gives the tractor character.

Good idea, my father ran a dairy farm using a Fergie 35X & a Zetor 4712. The Fergie had secondary (thinner) triangulating side-arms that took a lot of the sway out but the standard turnbuckles on the Zetor was a much more secure arrangement.

One thought, if you are going to continue using the boom pole, and you are concerned with lifting the front end, you could have a bucket welded to the front of the tractor, and fill it with weights with chain and tools, so that it will counter additional weight on the boom pole in the rear. Just an idea...

Next project: make a tray to fit the 3 point linkage that carry's one of those ICB containers. Full of water they one metric tonne ,so you may need to add ballast to the front of the tractor. I read the other night that harry Ferguson introduced waterloo boy tractors to the UK through Northern Ireland ,Waterloo boy became John Deere. Little wonder his designs are still practical today with such a long history around tractors.

Like I cant even believe you got dislikes from this... What is wrong with people?? A young lad and his father I get it people are just envious of you, so keep it up! I could only wish my father loved me enough to do these things with me. Also good to see you taking care of grandpa too. Keep it up because God is with you both. You dont need to rush rush anything just do it this way. Safety always first. Or you wont be around to enjoy it. You will have two age categories watching if you can get pa on some more. KZfaq will never ban something like this because its all original content. Doesnt mean you cant do some editing and add some creative content though. Also dont ever tell your names or any personal info. Big youtubers always get it bad that way. Be careful of lures and scammers too. Also I'd like to see a shop built next :D

Ohhh what wait a minute you don't even have a patreon account... You don't make much from actual youtube anymore and people all know this. the people that want to help you might even already be asking how to help out. I would get a patreon account.

Dude, your dad is holding onto the fender just above the rear tire while driving. I did that until a branch got sucked up by the tire and almost took my fingers off! Yowza!! I’d hate to see that happen to you guys!

Put a handle on the fender, right around where he prefers to put his hand. You will be surprised how fast people adapt to something like that. :)

Great tractor and boom pole. Father and I also built a log cabin using southern yellow pine from his property. We had an Allis-Chalmers tractor with an A-frame jib pole on the three point hitch, but also had a 20 ton army surplus winch, bolted to the frame up front and could lift logs to the top of the wall with the jib and winch. We hand hewed each log flat on two sides and made half dovetail joints at the corners. Enjoyed your video, as it brought back good memories of my father, who now is in the tender loving care of his Maker.

What it must be like to own such a huge bit of land with all those trees. Regretfully as much as I would love to build my own log cabin The chance will never come now. I think yhe saw mill is the best bit of gear going, you can use it s you said to cut lumber for others and to sell, so it really pays for itself..

I love your videos.. I would do anything to get out of the city, my 8 to 4:30 job and build a cabin in the woods and just live in nature. You are Blessed. May God continue to bless you always.
