First time I saw one of those was in FF7. While my brother and I were playing the game at the same time (him on the PS3, me on my PSP), he reached one before me. He and I both knew something was up when they placed that first solitary tonberry out there and it just slowly shuffled forward. Learned the hard way that you need to kill it and kill it fast before it wrecks all the characters you love, lol.

Wanna know what makes the Tonberry even scarier in that game? If you take too long killing it, it can up it's grudge stages to where it has THE HIGHEST offensive stats out of ANY enemy. Yes, even the hardest superbosses don't get as much Strength and Magic as a max grudge level tonberry.
@CerulianHimmel
@CerulianHimmel 2 жыл бұрын
It's literally a DPS check. If you don't have the; levels, gear, abilities and proper team set up... you can't win. The only way to 'brute force' it is to have at least two of those so stupidly over-grinded that nothing else is a challenge normally. I was lucky enough that when I fought it, I was actually on par with it so all I had to do was use the offensive spray and go ham.

I think a similar one would have to be the final fight in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. While you do have to fight the Second Sister in the fight's entirety, once you beat her Darth Vader himself shows up and cuts down the Second Sister for her failure. Its pretty scary when he doesn't even have a health bar, and all you can do is RUN.

It's quite clever for an atrocious "hater of all that lives" to be killed by a Tonberry, considering that their main gimmick is that they avenge the deaths of other creatures, getting stronger the more enemies you have killed (which in a game like Final Fantasy, is likely to be a lot). You don't expunge Tonberry's taint, Tonberry has arrived to expunge YOUR taint. And it just occurred to me that Sans and Tonberry are basically the same concept.

Depends highly on the game to be fair... FF14 tonberries in the wanderers palace dungeon during the scholar job quest are really easy to deal with. The ones in the dungeon for your duty have No HP bar at all. Tho the small ones do and are again pretty easy to get rid of. The ones in FF13 AND 13-2 are not easy. But wouldn't take longer then 8 ish minutes if you are decently prepared and leveled. (Still be worried of the everybodies grudge that can 1 shot you) Idk much bout tonberries of other ff games.

@@cherrydragon3120 I know that FFX-2 isn't the most well-loved games (it remains one of the few that makes me cry but I digress), but the Tonberries in that one are a complete and total nightmare. If I remember correctly, you pretty much only find them in the Big Dungeon and some of them are friendly and give you items. And sometimes they just straight up shank you and force you to go back to your last big level in the dungeon, resetting all of your work. I also feel like they show up in regular encounters as well. Which. Sigh. The trick in FFX is to bring in characters that don't often deal the final blow when you fight Tonberries.

@@JordanThomas-iq2kv I might be overselling it a bit. "4X" games are a type of (usually turn-based) strategy game, like Stellaris, Civilization, and so on, where you start with a small and relatively low-tech civilization and grow it into dominance over the continent, planet, galaxy, or whatever setting the game uses. The term stands for "eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate": as your growing empire improves its tech, you'll need to find more territory and resources for your people to continue achieving greatness, so you will almost inevitably start having to pick fights with other civs trying to move up on you. One situation that can happen is that you'll find yourself locked in a long war with a nearby empire whose numbers and tech are roughly on par with yours. That can turn into a meat-grinder pretty quick, since neither side has a decisive advantage - and then seemingly out of nowhere, a third civ that managed to get some sort of boost (no nearby rivals, loads of resources, high population growth, whatever) shows up with numbers and tech light-years beyond the best you or your local enemy have. The over-selling part comes from the generally slow pace of the game. That scenario above might be the plot of the game, but the gameplay itself is... Well, one friend of mine described it as being a bit like SimCity, but with a couple violent extra layers.

My only experience with Tonberries is from Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, where the mission Moschet Manor has you go searching through 7 different rooms murdering them. In the Final Fantasy games, Tonberries had a large amount of HP that took forever to get through if you weren't prepared properly. They slowly made there way towards you and once in front of you, stab you with the knife, which causes instant death. But the one technique they had that makes everyone frightened of them is called Everyone's Grudge (FF7) or Karma (FF10). That move does 10 damage for every monster that a character has killed. Example: One character has killed 1000 monsters, the technique will do 10000 damage to that character.

Another one from Final Fantasy XIII would be a Behemoth during Titan's Trials. Most behemoths are equivalent to small bosses. However, if you complete all of Titan's other trials, you unlock a special one where he summons a behemoth in your fighting zone. Turns out that's just some bait for Attacus the Soulless, one of the Undying Cieth and one of the few bosses that uses Doom. EDIT: He casts Doom after 20 minutes have passed, putting a hard time limit on the fight.
@cherrydragon3120

Attacus was indeed quite scary when it just 1 SHOTTED the Behemoth King.... wich if you played FF13 and got to chapter 11 where those things roam around the Achylte steppe.... you know they are no joke to fight... to be fair, Attacus is a real challenge with his like 8.4 million ish HP and his 999% stagger bar and if i am correct 99% chain resist. So there is perhaps maybe 1 or 2 times in the entire battle you can manage to stagger him. Try to fight him before you got a max Level party and you might not be able to stagger him at all. Meaning you won't do for example 6 times the damage you usualy do. But just your regular dmg. Wich ain't fun cuz i think he also halves physical and non elemental magic dmg
@azuredragoon2054
@azuredragoon2054 2 жыл бұрын
@@cherrydragon3120 I looked him up for more details. He takes 50% physical damage and only 10% magical damage. He also has 9.1 million HP. When it comes to physical and magical resistance, those apply regardless of whether there's an element or not tied to the attack. So a Sparkstrike against a target with 50% lightning resist and 50% physical resist will only deal 25% damage.

(Kirby and the Forgotten Lands Spoilers) One of my favorites is Morpho Knight. When Star Allies started the bait and switch era of Kirby, Forgotten Lands was quick to follow suit. So you destroyed the physical form of ID-F86, then had to snap the beasts out of his control after his spirit tries to take revenge. It seems like we're gonna get the Marx Soul esque rematch via Fecto Soul... And then a magic butterfly swoops in and obliterates him, transforming into Meta Knight's prototype appearance. When it happened in Star Allies, we were caught off guard. But those who played that game dreaded seeing that butterfly again.

Tonberry's are legit probably the scariest enemies in all Final fantasy. The way they look so goofy but just menacingly walk towards your party before just one shotting them with a little kitchen knife like a small green Michael myers.

Street fighter 2 comes to my mind immediately, but only if you are effectively playing a perfect game. The normal boss you fight (M.Bison) gets his rear kicked by Akuma right in front of you and you have to fight him instead.

Trouble Bruin from Dynamite Headdy also springs to mind. He's a recurring boss, but in one stage he's getting set up for his regular fight only to be crushed under the real boss of the stage. Poor guy never saw it coming.

one example I can give is in Skul the hero slayer when you enter the 3rd boss area for the first time there's and a Dark Alchemists that stands from a chair and starts talking and is about to start the fight before he is crushed by a huge Chimera

Even when I didn't know what a Tonberry was, I was terrified when I first encountered one.
