I have a Traeger Lonestar that’s about 6 years old. I had problems with either temp running away or losing fire. I replaced the controller with a retrofit from Blaz’n. It has functioned flawlessly since. The temp probe is about 25 degrees off so I just compensate with setting temp higher. Haven’t had to fix anything else and zero rust or paint issues. I vacuum out ashes after each smoke and am meticulous about cleaning the grate which looks like new still. Have made a lot of great meals with it!

I’ve had my Traeger a couple months now and the whole family is enjoying it. We’ve cooked pizza, pork butts, chicken, ribs, salmon, and burgers. The temperature consistency is amazing and everything has turned out great! So far, the only down side for me is the reduced amount of smoke flavor versus the cheap bullet smoker I used previously. It’s not a staggering difference in flavor, but it’s noticeable.

As an owner of a pellet grill from one of the competitors I like the pellet grill. The only thing a pellet grill helps you with is fire management. On a windy or cold day that is a blessing. Yes you still need to cook, as with any grill, and as always the pit master needs to watch the pit and the food. Pellet grills are not a set it and forget it type of cooking. There are problems that crop up, as with any grill and the pellet grill is no exception. There is a learning curve but that is understandable. I hesitated buying a pellet grill due to grease accumulation and mixing with the ash. I use a foil covered cookie pan to catch the grease and I can usually clean out any ash buildup with a shop vac. BTW I use a lot of your recipes as guidelines for meals that I cook. Today was a top round cut of beef and it came out great.

I've had a Traeger Timberline for 2 years now. It works great, I have no complaints. A good friend of mine has a Camp Chef and he feels the same about his. When cooking at higher temps (>275) I will supplement the cook with a pellet tube for more smoke flavor. I think you can't go wrong with any of the well known brands, Rec Tec, Grilla (I want to get their portable grill), Camp Chef, Green Mountain. If you want a tank, Lone Star Grills makes one too, although pricey. I love this channel. The videos are short and to the point.

I have Yoder YS640 on the comp cart and it is phenomenal. Always the right amount of smoke flowing through the cook chamber and holds temps even on cold days here in Nebraska. Just did a full spread on it for a July 4th party. 2 Briskets with some bold oak pellets then switched over to a fruitwood comp blend I like for the 2 Pork Butts and Ribs. Finished off the cook with some beef sausages using The BBQ Hot Rub!! Usually puts a good 1/4" smoke ring on everything.. Absolutely delicious!!

I work at an authorized (Platinum) Traeger dealership and we take in about one Traeger grill a week. from what I’ve seen with the repairs I have done myself, a good 70% of the time the reason for our repairs are lack of maintenance from the owner. I find myself replacing temperature probes most often because they are so caked with grease that they can’t accurately read the internal temperature of the grill and in turn, send too many pellets to the auger, which causes the fire pot to smother. also on the old arc controllers, ive had to fix maybe three auger jams ( where a singular pellet gets wedged in the auger and jams stuck.)The other 30% of the time I am replacing the old arc controllers that are somewhere between 5 to 7 years old… they seem to go bad no matter the level of maintenance from the owner. so far I haven’t replaced a D2 controller like what was shown in the video. however I have had to replace temperature probes connected to the D2 due to a lack of maintenance from the owner… anyhow that’s just imput from an authorized salesman, assemblyman and repairman… *Edit* We have since been taking in significantly less grills for repairs, have ebut have received calls from up to 100 miles away to receive repairs for grills which i find pretty crazy, i guess there aren’t enough sales representatives around to teach everyone 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

Running a Traeger since 2009. One hot rod, and one firepot but the hot rod was stuck in it, so I had to change it as well. I've had smoke rings to the bone on baby backs. I had never used the smoke mode until 2020. Using smoke mode in my older Traeger does add more smoke. Most people are clueless and follow other folks in the internet who use a hodge podge of techniques they see on the internet or YT videos. I started out that way, and then changed. Olive oil and SPG on ribs and run smoke mode for about 2 hrs, Run the ribs at 225 for about another 2 hours and then hit it with 275 to get some more pullback and render more fat. You could also wrap them if that's your style. If you sauce and like the taste, thin it out first with water. The flavor of the concentrated sauce isn't the same anymore. Thin it out and concentrate it back. If you want more smoke, near the end of the cook, sauced or not, put the Traeger back on smoke mode. For all the whiners out there, my stick burner sits right beside the Traeger. The offset dominates at ribs, brisket and pulled pork, but the Traeger dominates at sausages, chicken thighs/drums/wings, atomic buffalo turds, bacon wrapped asparagus , smoking cured pork belly for bacon and baked beans. I have more wood sticks that pellets @ 4:1.d In most competition videos, they use stick burners, BGE, gravity feed charcoal etc. But in a lot of videos, they have a Traeger in the back ground as well. If it rains, snows or is really cold and windy, load up the Traeger, throw a blanket over it and go back in the house and collect the food later. I don't have a wifire controller which would help, but isn't really needed.

I've had 2 pellet grills, a Green Mountain Grill and a Traeger. (Like the one in the video, but the slightly smaller version) The GMG hadn't really been in the market for very long, at least not with the WiFi controller, and I was having problems. First with the grill not being able to actually report through WiFi to my phone. (Phone connected well enough, but the grill wasn't reporting anything to the wifi radio.) The other issue was the auger and maybe the nylon gears. After a couple months was making an awful racket and disturbing clicking sounds near the drive unit. (Clean out the firebox regularly and it works great, but sounds terrible.) The GMG after ignition always pulsed the fans, no matter the temperature, so there was always a good amount of smoke being generated. The Traeger, ion the year+ of ownership hasn't given me any problems. The auger runs smooth, the WiFi is very reliable and there hasn't been any maintenance issues at all. (Periodic cleaning of the firebox is all that's really needed.) As for actual smoke generation, with mine, unless you engage "super smoke" mode, the firebox fan is always running, so you don't get much smoke at all. Super Smoke is not available over 225, and without S.S. it's essentially baking or grilling with very little little additional smoke flavoring. For me the perfect pellet smoker/grill would have; a reliable auger and WiFi, and a multi-mode fan (pulse or constant) through the entire temperature range. Until then, my current Traeger, having 2 of the three, has my recommendation. (Granted, I haven't tied any others, and the GMG may have improved their product over the past 6 years. This is just for what I have used.)

I always cooked on a stick burner until I bought a Traeger about a year ago. There’s a lot of talk about pellet grills being a form of “cheating” or being “for women”. For anybody looking to buy one, just do it. There’s one goal, for me at least, in cooking. And that’s to satisfy the people I’m cooking for, including myself. And I can confidently say that every time I’ve cooked, whether it be on the stick burner or on the Traeger, myself and everybody else who ate the food has been satisfied. Is there a difference in taste? Yes. Do both methods produce delicious food that people will love? Yes! And best of all, I can put the meat on the Traeger and go about my day with no worries, which is helpful when I have crap to get done. Nobody has ever complained about me using a pellet grill after they finish their plate of ribs, that’s for sure lol

Terrific video! A couple of small issues: - I think it would have been worthwhile to mention Wi-Fi connectivity. A lot of pellet grills have this feature and it's pretty handy to be able to monitor and even adjust your pit remotely. - The need to have power; Green Mountain Grills (and maybe others) use 12 volts DC to the pit. You get a converter to plug into the wall plus the capability of plugging directly into your car or even using an independent automotive battery (GMG includes hookups for all three options in the standard unit).

Pellet smokers go they cycles of smolder and burn. The lower the temp setting, the longer the smolder (smoke) portion and shorter the burn/flame portion for keeping the temp. At higher temp settings, it’s the reverse. More burn/flame time to keep the higher temp. So less smolder/smoke time. Why the reverse sear method is so popular with pellet smokers. Long lower temp to get max smoke. Then crank to 400F at end for sear. While the smoker feeds lots of pellets to the burn pot to get to that seat temp, it exceeds that 400F setting. Make use of that run-up time for searing. Someone mentioned smoke tubes for extra smoke. They work great for that. Or run just a smoke tube in the smoker for cheeses and the things you don’t want to heat up. 👍

I do like the convenience of just turning it on; set it and forget it, and all of the final products have been great. I guess that's what really matters. I got a searing kit from Grill Grates and let me tell you it's awesome.

Every time I see a pellet grill video I feel like there is some form of gaslighting! I’ve eaten off a pellet grill several times and there is little to zero smoke flavor or texture, is it good food sure just like someone’s aunt can make good ribs in a crock pot. The easy cleanup compared to a charcoal grill is a myth a Weber kettle or summit is the easiest grill to clean! I have purchased food from a pop up cooked on a traeger and couldn’t even smell the bbq flavor in the car! The app is great the recipes are great the community is great the cooker is mediocre at best just easy. My two cents. Hopefully this will keep someone from getting disappointed.

My personal opinion is these pellet grills are not an all-in-one cooker. I use mine for low and slow smoking only. I’ve got a great Weber Summit gas grill for hot and fast or searing. I’ll get the thick Costco ribeyes and put them in the pellet smoker for an hour or so at 180 degrees and sear them on the gas grill. Get to know your pellet smoker. Mine runs hotter than it indicates so before each cook I need to punch a code into the control panel to slow the pellet feed rate. Pellets also matter. I tried different brands but have settled on Kingsford since they seem to impart more smoke flavor. If you want more smoke you can buy a cheap smoke tube.

I considered that very question quite a bit actually. Looked into nearly every grill and pellet made. Came to the conclusion that the grills are extremely over priced sheet metal flimsy barrels. And you'll have more invested in pellets to cook the most expensive cuts of meat you'll ever put into a smoker grill. Honest assessment. Agree they do a good job of smoking and cooking. And if you have plenty of discretionary funds to throw at a grill and supplies to keep it smoking with no care for cost. Maybe a good way to go. Wouldn't go as far to say the best, but still a good alternative if you invest the time to get the right equipment.

Pellets vs. Charcoal I am not so sure. In Canadian dollars, 20 lbs of pellets can be had for $20. 20 lbs of charcoal runs about $30. (Much bigger bag though, but still only 20 lbs.) Does the charcoal have more heat and smoke per pound? I am not sure it does. Although I have to admit searing a steak over charcoal can't be beat by any other method.

So I have 3 smokers a Yoder YS1500, a Kamado Primo XL Oval and a Lone Star Grillz Vertical, the reality is simple. If you dont know what good BBQ is then whatever you cook on will give you the results you will enjoy. I spend 2 weeks traveling the US eating BBQ, Started in Oklahoma, Went to KC, Memphis, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, NC, SC and ended up in Texas.............The reality is IMO there is a CLEAAR and Distinct #1 and it is Texas. You can NOT get Texas style BBQ from a Pellet smoker. Now if your into sweet BBQ then a Pellet smoker will work, BUT do yourself a favor..............Scrap that Junk Traeger and get yourself a real pellet smoker. I started on a Traeger and what a POS, I cooked on a new Treager last fall and nothing has changed with them, same low quality thin junk that will not hold up the test of time. All of these Chinese built low dollar junk smokers are disposable and if thats your thing then so be it, personally you couldnt give me one of those junk things.

@@davidrussell631 Yeah my line up is Yoder YS1500, Primo Oval XL and the Lone Star Vertical. The Lone Star has a Pit Boss, The Primo has a Cyber Q. After doing my Cross Country tour of the Best BBQ I was pretty impressed with my abilities until i got to Texas mainly (Franklins) i knew I had work too do, I have spent damn near 2 yrs trying to duplicate what I ate at Franklins..........I even went as far as to godbelly one of his and cook mine and do a blind taste test with 10 people.........And I pleasantly surprised it was 6 to 4 Franklins..........It was close, I could tell but man it was close. There is a method using the Primo and I have watched so many people on KZfaq cook with a Ceramic and they IMO all do it wrong. First you need Smaller chucks of wood I would say 2" x 2" and use a lot of them with only about 2" of air gap between them........Fill the rest with smaller chunks of Lump Big Chunks I break up. You must cook at 255 to 265 to start then bump temps after a few hrs to 275. I wont go into the whole cooking process, but the last think is Quality of Meat. Franklin has an unfair advantage IMO, he gets the pick of the little from Creekstone Farms, to combat that I either cook Creekstone or Snake RIver Farms American Wagyu............Beef quality is #1 IMO.
