The Honda was already out before the 916. The designer of Ducati said him self he ripped up the drawings for the new 916 when he saw the Honda.

The NR500 competed against 4 cylinder 2 strokes. Honda knew that the only way to be competitive with a 4 stroke they would need all the benefits of a V8 500. Regulations did not allow more then 4 cylinders, so Honda designed a 4 cylinder that was effectively a V8. It was a magnificent effort but was never competitive due to teething problems and excessive weight. The NR750 was very successful in world supper bike before the Ducati 916 existed.

This is nonsense about the engine effectively being a V8.. It's a V4 with oval pistons.. Nothing else as it certainly didn't have any characteristics of a V8...
@Dug66666663 ай бұрын
@@Team-fabulousIt retained a couple of the benefits that they wanted if they were allowed to make a V8. Each of those 4 oval pistons had two conrods allowing it to rev to a high in its day 19K revs and each of those oval pistons had 8 valves giving the total number of valves and flow they wanted in a V8. But yes it would have the same balance and power pulses of a V4

I remember this bike being released in the '90's,the road testers of the time were quite scathing after years of hype the bike was extremely expensive, no more powerful than much cheaper 750's from Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki but worst of all it was heavy and bulky.The closest anyone got to praising it was in saying that in typical Honda style in that era,it was "well put together".
@johntouzel32983 ай бұрын
Yes, exactly that. Heavier with no more power than normal affordable production bikes, a complete waste of energy and resources. I love Honda and all Japanese engineering but hey come on everyone knows the NR 750 was one of Honda's biggest boo boo's flop fail in a massive way however admirable it may have been. All hail Honda !!

Until you bought the kit that opened up the potential hidden in it… never play down on Honda, they are an engineering first company.

I´m just trying to see before me how the eff they manage to make oil rings for oval piston. And the shear enjoyment for the machinist that had to mill and or precision surface grind the oval shape... :D :D

So I have a '97 916 which is my pride and joy and it has pretty much nothing in common. The fairing, the valves, the suspension, the swing arm, the angle of the v twin, the secondary frame, the under the seat exhaust, the injection system. Nothing is the same. The 916 was where a new era started.

When I first learned about the specs of the NR 750 , I was a bit disappointed.......it was quite heavier than other 750s and the speed was just like any other similar capacity machines .

Yeah, it's definitely best appreciated in the context of being a technology demonstrator. A corporate flex if you like.

NR 500 was doomed because the rules set were against it. It's like racing a modern day ZX 600r vs an NSR 500. If they were allowed 1000cc like today, it would have been a different history.

When Honda developed the oval piston NR500 for racing it was for 500GP and not motogp as it came into existence in 2002..

Author of this video should just remove it or redo it. NR was ahead of its time, influencing many other makers and should be rightfuly remembered as such.
@13xBlackSun2 ай бұрын
For example, it had nothing to do with number of valves, but with V8 engine , with removed cylinder walls. I’m gonna watch the rest if it, just for picture collection, otherwise in my opinion, should be removed.
