Over 100 Arrested After Columbia Univ. President Calls NYPD to Clear Pro-Palestine Student Protest

Columbia University President Nemat "Minouche" Shafik on Thursday called on New York police to forcibly clear a student occupation on the lawn of the school, which had been dubbed the Gaza Solidarity Encampment, resulting in over 100 arrests. The protesters were demanding the Ivy League school divest from firms and institutions that profit from the Israeli occupation of Palestine, but Shafik ordered the raid a day after being questioned on Capitol Hill about ongoing pro-Palestinian protests on campus. The move caused outrage among students and many faculty, who decried it as censorship and a violation of academic freedom. The renowned professor and presidential candidate Cornel West, chair of the Columbia-affiliated Union Theological Seminary, joined students Thursday in solidarity with their protest and told Democracy Now! they "represent the best … of the human spirit," and lauded them for "fighting in the face of domination and occupation and subjugation, and doing it with tremendous determination."

What happened to the Nation of free speech? Columbia University should apologize to the students. They are adults. they are paying. They have the right to demonstrate peacefully their point of view. Shame on the university president and its staff.

Kudos to Dr. West climbing a fence! In contrast, Dr. Shafik absolutely buckled and collapsed. It's not a surprise given Hilary Clinton and Victoria Nuland recently joined Columbia's faculty . Shafik needs to resign.

Cornell West is too smart, kind hearted and good natured to be president. Dr. West has nothing but love in his soul, and unfortunately the majority of the American people want a US president that has the opposite traits. Still, he has my vote as a ballot or write in candidate. Enough with this "a vote for [a third party] is a vote for Trump" BS. How about a vote for either mainstream candidate is a vote for genocide and little action to affect actual change we need.

columbia allowed them to protest but gave a date for them to leave. they failed to leave so they were arrested for trespassing. they were not peaceful when they were asked to leave.

The USA enabled a remnant of the French Colonial Government in Vietnam as a legitimate government and promoted it as a "democracy" which needed to be defended. When students protested against this travesty, they were called "communists" and "traitors." Eventually the general population of the USA learned the truth about their government's meddling in Vietnam, and that war came to an end.

I hope everyone vote for Cornel West come November. This is too much. I am experiencing some anxiety because I do NOT want the US to be involved in a war of Israel's making.
