The energy source is thorium - sadly Africa isn't known to have major deposits. However, one good thing is that the waste cannot be used for nuclear weapons. The thorium powered SMR will shut down automatically - it is based on a different design concept to traditional ones like Fukushima where they are now releasing contaminated radioactive water into the sea. It is sad that the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission is so slow. NuScale has been working for a decade to get their design approved. The US should have had small nuclear reactors in the 90's if the anti-nuclear crowd hadn't spread lies about nuclear. I am happy for China but the US did much of the early work in this space. We basically gave them our technology because we were not using it. I don't want to be too proud of the communist since there totalitarian government can push through whatever they want to because nobody can tell them know. Democracies are better for people happiness but the can also be swayed by false propaganda as was put forward by the anti-nuclear crowd.
