14:50 The reason Nelson's move of Qb8+ doesn't work is because after the rook pin, the white king CAN'T run to a1 to escape the rook checks because the black queen is covering the entire d-file even though it's pinned. Even if it could reach a1, it's still perpetual check because the a2 pawn is undefended, so the black rooks can bulldoze it. The correct move is in fact Qc8+ because after black blocks, we can take the e6 pawn with check, force the queen to block again, and THEN bring the rook to c8 for mate.

Yay, that's the solution I came up with, (I'm not rated, and hadn't even thought about chess for decades until I found this channel about two weeks ago. It's all thanks to Nelson.)

Yeah I think the reason he didn't see it afterward is that looking at the thumbnail afterward doesn't show the move black makes immediately before the puzzle, so the thumbnail incorrectly shows the pawn on f7 instead of f6, making it look like the e6 pawn is guarded.

The perspective of the board was Black's side, so I would've been likely to agree that Nelson didn't see that subtle detail since most puzzles are from White's perspective.

Fun and entertaining video! The advanced puzzles were really interesting and helps you realize that you need to scan the whole board and consider all the possibilities in a chess puzzle - even combining two or more ideas and concepts together and figuring out which order to execute them.

The answer to the second puzzle you got wrong was Qf6! It's a "fork" on the king the the bishop. The queen gets taken if white blocks, and after the king moves, then Nd4 is an actual fork on the queen and bishop. White has no checks from that position, so this is guaranteed to win at least a bishop.

13:42 it's not easy to see, but you HAVE to check black king every move, if you don't then black has an unstoppable checkmate on white. your solution: Qb8+, Qd8, Rc8 would lead too: Qb8+, Qd8, Rc8, Re2+, Kf1, Ra2+, ke1, Ra1# correct solution is: Qc8+, Qd8, Qxe6+, Qe7, Rc8#

You can tell by looking at the yellow squares that indicate which piece was moved by the computer. The empty yellow square is where the piece started and the other yellow square is where it landed. Hope that helps. Cheers.

7:48 It looks like Nc8 also works.. if Rxc8, then pawn takes rook for the queen.. otherwise it's the same as the solution, except Nd6 is the fork.

Last one... queen was supposed to move first. King can't go right or in the file that it is in so you then check with queen 1c and you win a queen.
@Dausuul
@Dausuul 7 ай бұрын
That was what I thought at first, but the white king doesn't have to move in response to Qd1+; white can just block with a rook. What you do instead is take the pawn on d3 with your queen. The white queen has to block. *Then* pushing the pawn to a4 is checkmate.

I'm kinda surprised you missed that last one, as that looks like a pretty simple forced mate in 2 with Qxd3! - Qc3 (forced) - a4#. Sometimes these high rated puzzles can throw you off by not being as difficult as rated though. Also the previous one is more tricky but I believe Qf6! is the right move and wins you at least the bishop.

Black would lose if they did that due to: Nc6, Re8, Nd8+, only really two possible lines. 1. Nc6, Re8, Nd8+, Kxe7, b8=Q 2. Nc6, Re8, Nd8+, Rxd8, xd8=Q line 2 is worse since White gets two queens...
