The Barbados Licensing Authority's electronic vehicle registration (EVR) programme is running smoothly with over 5700 already tagged under the pilot phase.
Under the EVR process, vehicles will be tagged with a radio frequency electromagnetic sticker known as an RFID tag where the registration, chassis, and engine numbers, insurance status, and name of the vehicle's owner will be stored.
Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Santia Bradshaw in providing the update reveals approximately 1700 of those already tagged are public service vehicles (PSVs), and about 1100 are state-owned vehicles.
In a bid to beat the rush, owners of private vehicles have also been visiting the EVR centres at the National Cultural Foundation at West Terrace, St. James, and the Oistins Car Park, in Christ Church.
The Ministry intends to work closely with the General Insurance Association of Barbados to ensure it has the full support of insurance companies on the official roll out of the EVR programme.
Minister Bradshaw stressed that until the legislation has been amended and passed, the EVR process is not yet mandatory and there could be no recording of infractions using the EVR system.
