Over and over I watch “professional” dog trainers and everyday dog owners over using the e collar for unwanted behaviors. If you’re hitting those buttons everyday there’s a very good chance your training is flawed

Biggest mistake I made was going to a local trainer who did exactly this. Keep tapping till he knows the command. So glad my friend found you and shared you with me. Your book and videos changed how I train. Thank you!! And my dog thanks you!!!

As always, you make many excellent points. I do disagree that using the collar every day (in a proper fashion) makes it is less effective. It is no different than using a slip (or other) leash every day, a prong collar every day, social pressure every day, etc. If the consequence is meaningful, it will not become less effective. And no, it will not turn the dog into a "fearful dog." Random punishment when the dog cannot determine what behavior is acceptable and what results in a consequence might do so such a thing, but when you have taught the dog what the collar means and how to respond to a correction, and the trainer plays by those rules as well, the collar simply does not create these horrible results that everyone seems so concerned about. Now, if you are correcting (with any tool) every day for the same thing, then you need to figure why the dog is not learning. It could be you simply are not teaching the lesson well and need to find a better way or (blasphemy, I know) you are not correcting significantly enough - you are simply nagging. I see way more low levels over and over by owners than I ever do going too high. That constant pushing the button at a level too low to outweigh whatever "reward" the dog is getting from the undesired behavior is way more common of an issue, that I see anyway. That to me, is far more egregious and inhumane than an appropriate high level that can be used (often) only once or twice to stop unwanted behavior.

Thanks for the reply Mylan but look at it this way. If you have to keep using any tool for the same thing everyday it’s not being effective. Or else the behavior would not continue

@@lklencho I believe that is exactly what I stated in the first sentence of the second paragraph. My point is that I understand your statement in the video to be (and many in the comments) that using the collar every day will dilute its effectiveness or a sign that training is flawed (that is what is written in the notation to the video as well). I believe that to be untrue and I encourage anyone to show actual proof of such. Using the collar every day is not the same thing as repeated corrections on the collar (or with any tool), for the behavior. Those are different things. As we both said, any time a tool has to be implemented repeatedly for the same behavior an alert should sound that you (owner or trainer) are doing something that is not working for some reason, and ( again, at the risk of upsetting people ) it is a chance the correction with the tool was not consequential enough to outweigh whatever reward the dog is getting for the unwanted behavior. Other reasons could be at play as well but the least likely of all those reasons is that the correction was too firm. Maybe it would be a bit more clear if you changed the notation of the video from "If you’re hitting those buttons everyday there’s a very good chance your training is flawed" to something like "If you’re hitting those buttons everyday there’s a very good chance your training is flawed " My point is that using the collar everyday, even giving corrections every day (not sure who does, but suppose it is possible) is not necessarily a bad thing or a sign things are awry. Depends on what behavior is being corrected or more accurately, what information is trying to be relayed to the dog. If you trying to get the same message across all the time, then something is not right. If you are teaching new lessons in new situations etc then things may be fine. Strange how we never see videos talking about the horrors of giving leash guidance every day. Anyway, great information as always. Really loved the recent video with the reaffirmation that we are raising dogs - not puppies; and certainly not "fur babies." We certainly can often get off to a poor start with the little ones to find we have many an issue to clean up as they get older.

Mylan I agree!! Something is being missed. Either the owner does not understand how to use the ecollar, or the owner is not making his expectations clear. In many cases its that the basic training has not been done, those important reps have not been done. Larry, always remember this is your job. You have achieved a level of expertise few people have. So many have been sucked into the “stick a cookie in his face” mode. Many others have no clue how to read body language and miss basic signs of impending problems. Plus even if they try their corrections, they are either off in their timing or way too light in their correction.

I also planned out a correction for raven one day.. There's 1 street that has a bunch of cats and I was so tired of having to manage her down the street where all the cats were. So I planned it out to have her off leash which she is very good off leash and decided to correct her as soon as she headed in the direction of a cat.. I corrected her before she got to the cat and she came right back to my side. And she hasn't gone towards a cat since.. in fact she avoids them like a plague. Lol! Won't even look at them.... And that's what I wanted

Hey Larry. Do you put the e-collar on your dog only when you know your going to correct him, or do you put it on the dog rendomly so he wont get collar smart?thanks

If the collar is on the dog it doesn’t mean that you have to use it. The e-collar is on the dog in case of. I think that’s the way Larry use it after the dog is trained to learn the language of the e-collar.

Thank you.. For me.. I'm no professional.. I do understand that an ecollar can be an effective tool if used correctly. But, I'm not a fan of it. If someone is constantly using it over and over, then the dog is eventually going to become numb to it or it might turn the dog into a fearful dog. I've learned a few things from the videos you've posted. Thanks!

That’s the thing.. as a dog trainer i’d rather get a dog that’s worked with a positive only trainer that didn’t work well than an abusive trainer who claims to be “balanced”

The planned correction works I use the e collar very sparingly with my young malinois. Two things I've had problems with him has been chasing the chickens when at my aunts house and counter surfing. Both problems sorted instantly when I set it up and issued one appropriately timed correction he never repeated either behaviour again. Timing is so important whether its giving a dog a correction for a undesirable behaviour or rewarding a desired behavior

But all you did is teach the e collar as a bull whip, and not as an extension of the leash. What he teaches is to use it as leash this allows the collar to be used for multiple purposes not just punishment. What you did is the lazy method you didn’t want to do the training correctly so your dog will never be as capable as one who understands the language of the e collar and your dog will only see it as a negative as opposed to a positive that allows them greater freedom and clarity of communication

I have a Lab mix and a Boston Terrier. They get along great 99% of the time. But the lab mix will occasionally growl when the Boston Terrier eats from her own bowl or plays with a toy. This is absolutely unacceptable to me as there is always plenty of food and toys for both. I put a shock collar on the lab mix and the behavior stopped within 2 days. She has also learned when I use the beep function, to come to me.... I love Ecollars.

Because of stupid and mean trainers and owners😥With that said, my Malinois puppy is doing the same thing when heeel between, and we just has to train over and over again.
