George experiments with over exposing colour film (Kodak Portra 400) to varying degrees to try and give you an idea of what speed you should shoot your film at.

Seriously though, I found it interesting how I preferred the tones when overexposing in natural light but then preferred the look of under exposing with the metz! P.S. lovely shots too

yeah it's so strange, I guess in normal portraits it's nice for less contrast and smooth tones, but when using a flash you really want that contrast
@TimPalman
@TimPalman 8 жыл бұрын
yah yah, I think overexposing really reduces the contrast in the lighter tones, hence the reduced saturation. Underexposing seems to saturate those same tones

The Metz looked like it was overexposing anyway. Was it in auto mode? It's a variable that makes the test a waste of time unless the flash was in full manual power mode. Face on flash is totally unflattering and harsh.

On the test with the flash, there's two components to the exposure: Ambient and flash. What you're seeing is the difference in colour temperature between the bulb and the natural light source, in conjunction with the under/overexposure characteristics of the film.. As a result of changing the iso setting, the camera has compensated by changing the flash power or shutter speed, which has changed the lighting ratio, which has upset the colour balance.

All I can say is I wish I'd have seen this earlier !! I legit had a shoot I was so excited about in NYC and the conditions were as close to this as possible. Though it's still one of my favorite shoots (It was my first online mag feature!) I couldn't help but thinking i liked how my 1st roll of Portra looked and now I know why. I remember finishing up a roll of 160 and then switching to 400 and forgetting to change the iso. I was told to develop normally and so I did. The pictures didn't have enough contrast for me and now I know why.

Another cool video... I usually overexpose color negative...to me the color and images overall look better when I overexpose. But WOW, your photo one stop under looks really good to me. I'm going to have to try that. The little lack of detail, the subdued and grainy cast...all that added a nice bit of drama to your shot at 800...very nice! Anyway, thanks again for sharing George... really cool stuff.

This video is perfectly timed! I just got my first pack of Portra 400 film :) I'm surprised with the look of the underexposed Portra @800 (1:24), it looks really awesome in my opinion yet from what I've heard most people overexpose Portra. I guess in terms of shadow detail it's not really ideal like you mentioned in the video.

My favorite out of all the pictures was actually the 1600 of her on the bed. I think the underexposed green tones really worked well with it according to my stylistic preferences. However the flash photos still look best at box speed, and I think this is because lifted shadows only work when detail is softer and stays in the midtones.

Excellent video. Just a minor point, but the first scene on the bed was very high-key, so the camera would tend to under expose this anyway, much like a snowy scene. So over-exposing is going to give you a more natural look. For a true test of whether the pictures look better under or over exposed with that particular film it might have been better to choose a scene with a more even distribution of tones? Good test though. You’ve inspired me to replicate it myself.

Danielsan How? When you lower the ISO it changes your shutter speed, meaning it makes your shutter stay open for a longer amount of time. How do you not get this simple thing? If you shoot digital, shoot something at 400 ISO. Then change your ISO to 100 and shoot the exact same thing. The 100 iso has a higher exposure time than your 400 ISO shot.

Hey man, thank you for making this vid brother! this really helped me a lot. i’m really confused with the terms of exposing and pushing/pulling. I have a question, when you processed the film did you processed it at box speed or you compensated it? (for example: PORTRA 400 shot at 200, and processed at 200 OR 400?) the same question as to the underexposing.

Interesting experiment. I also prefer the 200 with the bed portrait, althought the underexposed image do have an interesting atmosphere. How did you change the exposure? Especially with the flash images? There results surprise me, since there is no real effect. That could be explained if you had changed the shutter speed to change the exposure. But if you change the aperture, then this is a quite interesting outcome.

Of course underexposing film is never going to look better and that's completely normal. Contrary to digital, the common knowledge with film is that if your shadows are too dark, they're going to get grainy and muddy and you're not going to be able to pull details back from them, while highlights are highly salvageable. Only, Portra 400 is so good that you can actually get a workable negative even with -2 stops underexposure (again, other films don't do this) as long as there are highlights in your scene, if it's just dark, say goodbye to that negative. So while there's really no point in underexposure in film (unless you want darker highlights in a low contrast scene, perhaps) what's really interesting with film is to see what happens with overexposure, where I think Portra with it's amazing lattitude can even tolerate +3 stops overexposure quite well. Really an amazing film.

Im not sure if you're film developer can do it, but if I tell mine that I shot a lot of bracketed shots they can scan them accordingly and not in auto mode. For a whole year I was messing around under exposing to get moody shots, even bracketing shots and every time they came back they were exposed normally. All the bracketed shots looked pretty much the same. I was going crazy, until I found out the scanner just tries to expose everything correctly no matter if its bracketed or not.

Didn't the colour saturation vary? I just started to experiment with bracketing and my film is not back from the lab yet. I get it developed by a cheap drug store lab so I think they will automatically adjust the brightness as well. But I wasn't going for brighter or darker shots in the first place, instead I think that the colours come out differently when you overexpose.

I was hoping you or anyone else who sees this comment could clarify some things for me. If I rate my Portra 400 at 200 to overexpose one stop, do I meter using 400 or 200? Also, at what speed should I ask the lab to develop my roll at afterwards? Thanks in advance.
