For the first time, The US Food and Drug Administration has approved an over-the-counter birth control pill. Opill was initially approved for use in 1973 and has been found to be 93% effective in preventing pregnancy, when taken properly. While this is a departure for the United States, more than 100 countries across the globe offer oral contraceptives without a prescription. Prices and whether or not Opill will be covered by insurance have not been announced.

Why was birth control not available over the counter in the first place? Never understood that.

It kind of is. But only emergency contraception that's one pill and about 50 bucks. The FDA takes these things seriously to make sure these kind of drugs don't kill people on mass. In the past imperfect birth control pills caused clots that could lead to heart attacks and deaths.

It is known to cause cancer. It needs screenings to check for said cancer every year. This isn't like some aspirin or whatever. This has really bad side effects for many people. I have to use it because I have Endo, but if there was any other option I would be off this in a minute.

Both prevent ovulation, but plan b prevents pregnancy after unprotected sex within three days, birth control is taken continuously to prevent pregnancy. It’s not good to take plan b regularly, but birth control is made to be taken regularly. It prevents ovulation and makes it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg if ovulation does occur and provides ongoing protection as opposed to just the one instance of unprotected sex.

Plan B is not birth control you take daily, It's only meant for accidents and does not guarantee you won't become pregnant, plus plan B is very expensive. The Opill is a actual birth control that you have to take daily for it to work and prevent pregnancy , opposed to plan B which is only for accidents that happen in the bedroom
