Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching. Today, Ethan, Tator, and I are called to an infamous loading dock at the local University. There is constant foot and car traffic while trying to blind-side back down an offset sloped dock with an increasingly steep drop-off, so PLEASE don't shame the driver. This dock catches veteran drivers off-guard. Thankfully, this driver is able to stop before things get really bad. I've been to this dock many times and this is minor in comparison to some of the incidents I've worked here. Hopefully, this doesn't seem boring. It's all just a part of what we do every day. And the Rotator makes often difficult tasks look easy. I hope you all enjoy this video!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

@@truckingwithj7202 We know...you never made an error in judgement. Especially when a new driver.... The guy deserves credit for stopping and not making it worse. He's a self-admitted new driver. I've been in that situation where vehicles and people are whizzing all around you and are impatient or sometimes even angry. It's important to get out and look whenever you're moving / backing, especially blind-side. But overall, given the caliber of alot of the drivers on the road these days, I'd give this kid a thumbs up. He knew enough to stop and not make it worse!

I'm sure folks will unfairly bag on the driver for this one, but at least he knew he was in trouble and stopped and called for help before trying to fix it and making it worse...I'm more geared to blame the architect who never considered how obnoxious that loading dock would be for drivers, especially with all those parking spaces there across from it.

Yep just because something looks good on paper doesn't mean it will work in the real world. The vast majority of places don't think how they are going to get trucks in to them to make deliveries. I remember picking up and at brand new kitty litter plant so new the landscaping wasn't even finished. They had trailers parked directly across from the docks. 60 feet from the nose of the parked trailer to the nose of a trailer in the dock, yes I measured it. Granted enough room to technically swing a trailer around to sight side into the docks but they forgot about the length of the truck. Barely had a foot between trailers when they were at the doors. I so wish they would make architects that design these places ride with a trucker as part of their school. Maybe then they would understand...

I've worked a few of these in the past and it's amazing how badly designed they often are, especially for semi's.

There is an easy fix to make it more accessible, cut the crass and curb of from the right side looking down to the dock and make backing up possible hugging the trash bin site going down. Mostly people who desing and deside where and how loading docks are placed have not slightest idea how big or wide a truck is. There was once a place where when leaving loaded I needed to drive on top of a ditch so the ditch was between the front tires, back up in to a between of a light post and a tree and basically drop right front tire in to the ditch when leaving just to make the left turn. All because loading dock was placed in to a nice looking spot. Flat area near the road was needed for the passenger cars so they didn't need to go park where the loading dock was placed
@GugsGunny

I disagree on blaming the architect. The building looks like it's at least 50 years old, with the dock designed for trucks they had back then.

There was once a loading place where supposedly was enough room for a truck. I told the handler to talk about semi, not a truck. So we went to see the sight and sertainly there was room for a truck, a delivery van sized truck. Obviously we didn't choose that place.

This is why in the UK, short-wheelbase cabovers are pretty much universal. Many city streets were not just already laid out, but old, by the time the Mayflower set sail, and most have to be bypassed by major roads. It can get pretty interesting with a 55' overall length semi when the roads were designed for a coach-and-four at best.
@jerrykinnin7941

An interesting read is the US/Canada Bridge law. To haul 80,000lbs US gross You need a 51ft 5 axle bridge so that's Steer axle centerline to 5th wheel 15 ft where the 5th wheel makes the steer axle 12000 lb. Then the 2 tandems can be 34000 lbs. Then 5th wheel to centerline last axle 36 ft. Over here a '53 ft trailer is the standard. With a 75' overall. To be Canadian legal. And trailer axles set at 40' from the kingpin. That's the California and Florida standard bridge. Which in turn is what a 45' trailer is.

It doesn't help you US drivers having the front axle in front of the driver US trucks have little turning circle.! True majority of European trucks are cab overs. See the occasional American style truck over here sometimes logging or recovery trucks. We call coach and four "rigids" you sometimes call them straights? Semi-s are called Artics or class 1 as in the license category..

@@jerrykinnin7941 12,000lb steering axle that's crazy must have strong arms Jerry. .. All UK/EU trucks have fixed trailers. kingpin - tandem. No adjustments Max length 16.5M (54ft 2in). Reversing gets interesting with a tri-axle trailer and six leg (wheel) 3 axle tractor units.. we have 1 drive axle and "tag axle" non driven centre axle. There Is a king pin adjustment on the 5th wheel but is rarely used. As there's usually about 1-2 ft between cab and trailer. Can go one end of the country to other with no adjustments.. You guys have to change kingpin to tandem per state that's crazy.! Definitely want a day cab for doing food deliveries like in the video. And most likely that dock was added after the building was completed.
@tuba7084
@tuba7084 Жыл бұрын
@@stuartd9741 12,000lbs on steer axle is the amount of weight that is allowed to be carried on that axle. If you pay close attention to the steer axle on the rotator tow truck, that steer axle is a much heavier axle, usually have much larger tires mounted on them. The 12,000 lb steer axle is pretty standard for a majority of the road tractors here in the US.

Mark of a good driver. He recognized quickly he was in trouble and stopped and called for help. Did his unload while waiting too. And they put docks in some of the worst places. From my limited working with wrecker services, and from these videos, I believe that by the book, a smaller truck could have done the job, at least the Western Star, even many medium duty wreckers could do it, they are either tied up, the customer requests a larger wrecker (I’ve always had the unfortunate circumstances where they send the largest wrecker they could find, when a DuraStar wheel lift could have done the trick), or the towing service selects the truck they believe best suits the job. Easier, quicker, and cheaper, to bring a larger truck than required, than to break something, or send for the other truck. Let’s add in how generally unhelpful callers are. By the time it’s dispatched, comes in something like “truck off the concrete into the ditch”. We are all well aware of how thoroughly entertaining “truck in a ditch” can become for Mr. Pratt.

It has bern years and years since I have been in that part of SEMO’s campus. Some parts have not changed and some parts are very different. In 1980, I lived in Myer’s hall. I noticed a lot of green space is now parking. Only constant is change.

This really brings back fond memories, for SEMO is my alma mater, and I was there from 1980 to 1978. Anyone remember the Towers and Cardiac Hill, and climbing it with a heavy backpack? Or riding down Cardiac Hill on cafeteria trays in the winter?

Sysco has shorter trailers and it should send them in to such a tight spot versus the much longer trailer. Good job, Ron and Ethan.

i do exotic car hauling now, and i see these food service guys everywhere. unless im in the hills or downtown new york, i would tend to agree that they have one of the hardest driving jobs.

Here in the UK a lot of the supermarkets and brewery companies use what they call an 'Urban Artic' for jobs like that. Its a short day cab 4x2 tractor unit with a 1-2 axle short trailer on the back that's not much bigger than a rigid box truck. Gives them the advantage of manoeuvrability in tight quarters while still having the ability to swap out/preload trailers at the warehouses.

That driver did a great job knowing when to stop. I can see that parking is a premium, but some of it should be eliminated to make it safer and easier for truck access. Thank you for sharing an interesting video. Stay safe and God bless.
