In this video, first published on my website on October 10, 2021, I showcase some of the all-time greats who used what I call OTTFTI (Over the Top from the Inside), a transition move that encourages an aggressive lower body clearing action and a right arm that drives in front of the body to facilitate the side-arm throwing action that I have always taught and still strive for in my own swing.

You and Christo are the only instructors in on this. I learned this way as a junior golfer in the 70’s and was a very successful tournament player. Near scratch at age 14. When I turned 16 I pretty much left golf and by the time I was 18 I dropped it entirely until the age of 40. When I took it up again for some reason I followed all the modern swing BS and never came close to my abilities as a young teenager. Christo convinced me to return to my roots and the game is again coming back and is so much more enjoyable. Plus it’s a lot less stressful on my aging back and hip bones. My 2 favorite swings - Ben Hogan and Slammin Sam Snead. Things of beauty and contained power. My favorite player - Lee Trevino. Followed by Tiger.

Bradley Hughes /Tom Watson has been on this for at least 6 years . This it not really over the top. Classic high hdcp. over the top is back shoulder coming out creating a vertical shaft. Not one of these great players does anything close to that. Hands out shoulder back should be the theme ,not over the top. Misleading.

@@arisandrews5672 Yes it is OTT. The original pro definition of it. OTT merely means the down swing is on a higher plane than the backswing even though it may be slight. It need not be the slashing across of the target line by the trailing shoulder and club face that choppers are famous for (90% of all golfers?). There are at least 2 vids I know of that prove and demonstrate this. Also folks like Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan… have been on to this for almost a century. But yes Hughs and Watson did catch on very late in their careers.

@@kyleneighbors6386 I'm happy to report I've hit 2 drives in the 350 neighborhood in the last couple of weeks. They are downhill holes that if you can get the ball to carry in the 290 to 300 range it rolls out nicely - #4 at Eaton Canyon, and #13 at Brookside!

This is exactly what I've been working on this year. My ball striking has really improved. I focus on getting the club behind the hands on the way down. I need to work on getting my hips more open.

I used to do this naturally when I was younger but got away from it trying to hit more from the inside. Ended up with a chronic push and push / slice. I find I can get back to the desired pattern by doing a drill of trying to hit pulls from a slightly closed stance.

Wayne, thank you so very much for your video posts! This one in particular is my favorite. I used to swing exactly like this in my late teens (late 80s) and was taught to stop swinging over the top. Well, you have now proven to me decades later that I had it correct from the beginning, with my natural athletic swing. Perhaps growing up being a baseball player and a pitcher who would swing like Pete Rose or Rod Carew as I wasn't a power hitter so I would go for base hits, and I pitched more '3/4 to "side-arm" led to me transitioning to golf with inside takeaway?! Now I'm 50 and I am REJUVENATED to go back to my natural athletic swing and I'll stop trying to "drop it in the slot" and manipulated to club to swing inside out!!! Truly a game changer for me Wayne. Thanks a ton!

ahh OTT FTI :) Good Vid of the nuances of it. I can do both at will (OTTFTI ) or the Trevino ' underneath the plane from the inside' (UTPFTI) ? lol...the underneath plane is pretty much always a safe shot, but is kinda blah...compared to the OTTFTI

Appears the players are pointing butt end of club at ball as they start down. Also are they toe up to toe up as I was taught, right hand over left release. Thanks for your work, great content as usual.

This is exactly what I've been trying to focus on. My hands get too shallow and I have to flip my hands. Whenever I get my backswing more vertical and allow my hands to get out in front of me on the downswing, i strike much more consistently. Hideki Matusyama is someone who does this outward hand path really well.

can it be that you are not enough open when you hit the ball i am nearly stright or closed. when i hit the ball, i think i am have to delay my arms more a friaction of a second longer i think if i am more open when i hit the ball is a good thing.😄

As you mention many times, the major issue with all beginning golfers is that the setup address position is sideways, 90 degrees to the intended flight of the ball. Most even athletic smart golfers, never get that good because they never realize you have to be open with your hips at impact and hips have to be deep and squatty. This solves all issues at impact. I solve this for most players by using the Hogan method. Flare that left foot and "think" where you need to be at impact even at address. Mathew Wolf, stated his pre shot routine is to preset his impact thoughts...while at address! Even Jack had a tiny forward press as he started his swing. Another way to highlight this to "bad" golfers is to get them to address the ball at 45 degrees open when chipping/pitching 50 yds shots with a SW and see what this does to their results. They are often amazed and it finally starts clicking in their brains!

Wayne was Ben Hogan Stack and tilt? and i absolutely love this swing too, im finding out if your lower body doesnt stay in the box and you arms have no room , good by , hugh pushes, strong grip hooks lol, gotta have room for those arms for that side arm throwing motion!! Ty Wayne know one breaks it down like you!!

wayne, is the ott move happening because of the body opening up and the shoulders start turning left causing the hand path to cut across the target line a bit? also is the shallowing of the shaft something that just happens?
@alansmith3378

I think because Azinger had such a strong grip that the over the top move at the start of his down swing actually stopped him having duck hooks.

Very timely Wayne. I've been thinking about this a lot, particularly since I'm inclined to get stuck underneath in a push/hook pattern. The mental block with the outward hand path is fear of coming over the top, which as you point out, is misguided. Being a little laid off at the top (a la Mr. Hogan) seems to be the most natural way to achieve the outward hand path while shallowing the shaft, would you agree?
@wdefrancesco
@wdefrancesco 2 жыл бұрын
I would agree, although many great players manage the move from across the line, which requires a more active and aggressive shallowing move. It's now in vogue to think that just that move is an extra source of power (a la DeChambeau) but I'm not so sure about that. I liked Bryson's swing when it was perfectly on plane (and he was skinnier). For the normal player I think that backswing change is easier than transition change.

Another reason most golfers never get open at impact, they have flexibility and strength issues in their stomachs, hips, butt muscles. It requires work and stretching!

Amateurs come over the top with the club shaft! You can hit the ball with an “0ver the top” hand path as long as the shaft is not coming over the top. Every player in your video is not coming over the top with the club shaft. I think the standard explanation of “ over the top” is the position of the shaft not the position of the hands.
@nathaniverson6828
@nathaniverson6828 Жыл бұрын
I think one of the super confusing moves is a more inside takeaway and with depth of hands through transition and maintaining hip depth with a shallowing move makes people thing ott. Because the hand plane is outside the takeaway but the club head still gets shallow af…
