To me it’s the intent but the execution wasn’t good. He failed really badly with most basic tasks but was too good with the sword fight (I know it wasn’t actually serious but we had not see anything that level of skill from Sokka with a sword even with the tricks). And the rest of the gaang seem really incompetent. And I liked the schedule in the prior episode, it’s this one that makes a joke out of it. And Iron gets fit too fast in the timeline and I don’t know if him pretending to have lost his mind did anything. Maybe it would be easier to judge if we saw the break out.

@@sarasamaletdin4574 1) The extent of his failures were jokes. I'd assume in a non-cartoon environment they'd be more grounded. 2) The swordfight was him implementing his basic/subpar knowledge of sword fighting with his general tactical intuition. 3) The gaang started out extremely competent, and only had hiccups when it came to planning, which is something they've never really done before. 4) Sacrificing time for ability, when is comes to setting up an *8 minute invasion* seems like a fair tradeoff. Especially when the ability is learning swordsmanship from a literal master. 5) For a normal man. 6) " "Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak" ~ Sun Tzu, The Art of War " ~ Uncle Iroh, Probably.

It's true, but for me it was kind of ruined by the fact that he was A) given a choice of material, and B) able to use a meteorite to make it at all. Not all metals are created equal, especially when it needs to be durable enough to withstand battle. There's a reason steel is so widely used, and even before steel was invented there wasn't a huge selection of options when making weapons. I think that's something that's very beautiful about this show is how teaching is portrayed. There isn't one single lesson Aang can learn that defeats all lessons. He learns from Guru Pathik that he has to let go of earthly attachments to unlock the avatar state, which is true, and Iroh tells him that pleasure and joy are important aspects of life too, which is also true. Jeong Jeong tells him that fire is destruction and very dangerous, which is true, but the dragons tell him that fire is a giver of life, which is also true. In The Blind Bandit you really get a feel of Earth Kingdom culture and traditions, how it feels lived in and it has standards, which makes Toph teaching something completely different feel all the more meaningful. And we see both of them work, there areqñ many earth benders which are incredibly talented without being Toph, and many could have discovered metal bending, since bending the impurities is something that was known well before Toph actually discovered it, only that nobody tried to, or managed to figure out how to, actually do it. I think it really reinforces the Buddhist idea of balance and the Chinese philosophical idea of yin yang, the two opposing forces that don't cancel each other out, but rather complement each other.

I've heard a lot of reactors go "wait, that was one day??", but never heard any reactors wonder why Katara takes such a huge leap in power between The Waterbending Master and Siege of the North. Neither is plausible if you think about it, but Katara's skill progression is much easier to swallow because the show doesn't tell you how much time has passed between those episodes. It's deliberately left vague enough that you can add in your own timeframe.

Additionally, we saw that Katara had really powerful waterbending when she cracked Aang out of the iceberg and that she was trying to create her own techniques. We also saw her take on Pakku with an impressive display of bending. Sokka, while showing combat experience, was always more of the boomerang guy. Sure he had a club and a machete(?), but never a sword. Swords have much more presence in media in general, so maybe that contributes to the shock in his fast improvement. Most of Sokka's training was the philosophical too, not even involving a sword. This is unlike Pakku's "moving water vs feeling the push and pull", as there was at least waterbending on screen.

This is frustrating as a student. In comparison look at the calligraphy scene. Piandao tells Sokka exactly how the calligraphy connects back to swordfighting from the start. He doesn't disarm Sokka just by pushing his sword. He pushes Sokka's sword left, then binds it at the guard and pushes down and then across his body. This would essentially twist the grip out of his hand. It's a remarkably well drawn sword technique. It also is really that easy to do to someone who doesn't know what they're doing.

In the second scene everything falls of the tray and Iroh just grabs the bread/apple/potato/rock (w/e it was) that was the only thing left on the tray. That guard was an asshole in this episode in particular that it got me thinking. That guard looks old/young enough for him to have been a child when Iroh was at the height of his status as a Fire Nation general, and it's made clear that the Fire Nation teaches things about the war and its fighters to the school children. Do you think it's possible that that guard looked up to Iroh as a war hero when he was a child and possibly even aspired to be just like him, and seeing him be just a fat old man who's lost his mind in prison is what's making him lash out at him like that? He finally meets his hero, whome he thought was this awe inspiring hero to his country only to find out he was a cowardice traitor to his people. That would definitely make anyone mad.

Sokka getting disarmed was on point. One of the first things you learn fencing is the circle 6 parry where you draw a 6 with the blade to guide your opponent’s blade out. If you completely outweigh your opponent when you do this it can put their wrist at an awkward angle and cause them to drop their weapon. I imagine it would be INFINITELY easier to disarm with these short chinese straight swords than the long handle/long blade foils used in fencing. Ive never done anything outside of fencing with swordplay tjo.

@@consistentsuffering2542 Yeah with Ty Lee being the only exception, the only time a master of a nonbending art is shown defeating a bender at anything, is when the bender is a complete and total novice. To put it mildly Sokka learning sword fighting in this world, is like bringing a sheleighly to a nuke fight. It's stupid. Sokka is stupid, and we're stupid for playing along, that sword and Sokkas new skills were never gonna be any use in this world. And in the end they weren't. If you're in range to shove a sharp stick at someone who can summon unlimited amounts of fire, and blast it at you. Then you're in range to get barbecued. Face it, this episode the writers realized they had made Sokka useless, and besides making the audience laugh, he had no purpose being on the team. In a real world scenario they would cast him out sometime in season 1 just because hes not worth the rations he eats. And so to make the audience not think about this, they made a stand alone episode were Sokka learns a useless skill, and the rest of the team suddenly becomes too stupid to breathe without him. But logically he was just a hinderance through3 the show.

Piandao putting the calligraphy brush in Sokka's hand is actually historically consistent. Being left-handed was not only considered unlucky and an attractant to bad spirits, writing left-handed in east asian calligraphy means that some of the strokes don't conform to the standard forms. Sokka being depicted as completely left-handed prior to this episode alludes to his lack of formal education before Piandao becoming his master. Even if he's still left-hand dominant for all other tasks, the calligraphy has to be done right-handed. A+ attention to detail.

The gaang has THE avatar, who is mastering the elements faster than any before him, Katara, who was a self taught bender (which I can’t imagine was easy) then nearly instantly mastered it when given a teacher, and Toph, a BLIND bender who is THE most powerful earth bender. Thank you. Someone who actually gets it. Shows cutting away to other characters going "Wow, woah, they're so amazing" trivializes the moment. It reminds me of the Battle of the Gods movie when Bulma got slapped, Vegeta gets pissed off at Beerus and charges at him full-force and starts wailing on his selfish ass. That's a powerful moment, he may be a prideful idiot, but part of that pride is his wife - and seeing her mistreated, he takes it personally - which is what the moment called for - and he starts landing hits on him that actually shove him back... but then they cut away to Roshi going "This is incredible! Vegeta's anger over Bulma getting hit made him even stronger than Goku!" It detracts rather than adds! They could have spent that moment showing Vegeta grinding Beerus' face against the ground before launching him into the air before using his Galick Gun.

Of course the moon was full, that's just Yue wanting to check shirtless Sokka out Also, the reason Pian Dao is so likeable is because, for the most part he doesn't treat Sokka like a child. He takes Sokka's humble request to teach him at face value, and never patronizes him or berates him for being creative. He treated Sokka as a novice peer, rather than an amateur child beneath him. Adults often fail at showing children and teens respect while expecting them to learn how to do it. Any adult who is willing to teach while still remembering that kid is a human being with thoughts and feelings is instantly likeable.

I wish you would have gone over how Piandao reveals Aang as the Avatar. Specifically "I think I'm a little old to be fighting the Avatar..." To me, much like many of Iroh's own carefully worded warnings to his opponents, Piandao stating this is spooky as all fuck. He's just a swordsman, but the tone of his voice totally gives the impression that he isn't intimidated to come to blows with an Avatar. This leads credence to the audience about the power of Non-Benders; The implication that Piandao as an old man isn't necessarily unconfident in his ability to go toe-to-toe with Aang is already impressive enough, but considering that Piandao is also basically informing the audience that he was also a significantly stronger opponent in his prime suggests that Piandao was an absolute *MONSTER* of a swordsman in his hey-day. Damn, I really wish we could have seen swordplay from this dude at his peak. Considering how bad-ass Sokka and Zuko turn out as swordsmen, that would have been something to behold.

I get the world building and trying to establish some sort of power for non benders, but from what we see from benders like Aang, Katara, Toph and Azula, they should be so dominant and non benders like Piando, Mae and Ty Lee really shouldn’t be a problem for them.

There is only one thing wrong, with this episode... Sokka pouring the molten metal, into a mold... making a sword in such a fashion, will create a poor quality weapon, in which no amount of tempering and/or hammering, can fix.
@andrewli6606
@andrewli6606 2 жыл бұрын
Technically, that is how some bronze swords are made, but yes, the pouring sword mold is very much an inaccurate Hollywood trope. Game of Thrones also does it. The meteor metal also acts like adamantium, when realistically, it’d just be iron, so maybe this meteor metal acts like bronze in terms of smithing. Platinum acts like steel in Korra.

The laws of metallurgy are not consistent with actually existing reality in the avatar world.
@Niyucuatro
@Niyucuatro 2 жыл бұрын
well, using molds would not affect the ability to temper the weapon per se. Folding and hammering steel was don for 2 main reasons. first one, you need really high temperatures to melt iron to a liquid form, so hammering a red hot ingot is easier. Second one, metals, specially refined with old techniques, can have a lot of impurities, cutting and folding the metal brings them to the surface, where they flake off. so it reduces the effects of those impurities. one you have the shape done, whatever the means for shaping it was, you make the blade hot and quickly cool it by quenching it. this makes the outside of the blade compress quicker than the inside, tightening the internal structure. This makes the metal harder, but more brittle. By tempering it, wich means heating it t a target temperature, the metal softens a bit. This reduces the effects of the quenching and, if done properly, brings the sword to a nice middleground between hardness and flexibility, so the sword dosn't crack with the first hit, but it can still hold an edge. So you could properly temper a molded weapon, or even a cut from a metal panel one. The main disadvantage of using molds is the posibility of air bubbles in the metal. though that would be fixed with a bit of hammering.

I feel like I watched a video where someone tried to make a sword out of meteorite before. The metal was just too brittle and cracked all the way through to properly forge. It would just crack after a while. They ended up needing to cast it into a mold to get it into any discernable sword shape. It was a while ago when I watched that though, and I'd imagine that not every meteorite is like that.

Sokka's Master is my brothers favorite episode in the series, I personally don't think its the best, but I do think its one of the best episodes in the show and in my opinion the 5th best episode overall, I love how this episode portrays sokka and I do think that sokka kind of gets pushed to the sidelines since he has no bending abilities, I really wish he got to use his sword more in later episodes. Just a quick thing about Sokka getting disarmed. Its a super nice detail the the sword gets pushed away on the side that his thumb and fingers are wrapping around. After watching this episode for like the fifth time in three days, irealized something.. Sokka only has two days of training with pian dao as you mentioned wich is not enough to learn anything really significant, but i don't think the purpose of pian dao training him was to teach him sword skills. It was really a lesson in self esteem for sokka. All pian dao did was to make sokka realize that he is strong and important for the group and show him that he already knows everything that he needs to be successful. A big lesson for everyone actually.. We often compare ourselves to people way above us or people that have talents or experience that we could never achieve and belittle ourselves, when all we need is confidence in ourselves. I think thats what those two days were all about and the sword fighting was just the medium pian dao used to convey it to sokka

It actually makes reasonable sense. Katara's bending is garbage in episode 1, and Sokka has no experience with other benders, and probably not the best education. His experience with firebenders is that over an industrial empire who mostly benefits off bending based on how it can work with shit they have built. As far as he knows, waterbending is a flashy parlour trick. By the end of the opening double feature he has seen a small child use water bending to utterly demolish an entire ship crew and nearly scuttle a giant metal monstrosity. He learned his lesson early.
